I knew when we converted this room into my office, that I wanted a lot of desk space and window seats under the windows. I also made new cabinet doors for the old kitchen shelves I hung above my desks and the window seats. Believe me, my desk does not look this clean, nor do I always have fresh flowers on my desk. Each desk is designed and built to accommodate the confines of each room and meet the needs of the user. The solution replaced the existing doors with custom sliding doors made from reclaimed wood. The project incorporates reclaimed wood on the feature wall with a custom steel fireplace surround, hearth, and bent plate shelves. The building is a historic renovation full of character, with old industrial walls and a hip-modern fit-up for their company. With that in mind, the goal was to create a desk that maximizes usable work space, incorporates file storage, eliminates any waste material and be very affordable to construct in terms of both material and labour.
The first desk unit was made from douglas fir salvaged from the Armory renovation in downtown Minneapolis, MN as well as hot rolled plate steel tops and accents.
The result, a refined looking desk with no visible fasteners, clean lines and all of $60.00 in materials.
All fixtures were built primarily from white pine which was reclaimed from a historic building in downtown Duluth, MN. The gray desk was built from reclaimed flooring from a lake home set to be demolished near Detroit Lakes, MN; plate steel and steel accents were also design inclusions. The reception desk features a hot rolled plate steel receptionist counter and is laser cut showcasing the company’s logo. All of the fasteners are hidden from view and so it makes for a really clean, nice looking desk. A black cave that was a desk armorie that could close, but who am I kidding, the doors never closed, and I had ZERO desk space, so all my papers were spread all over the floor. I didn’t need much space in the desk because I have a wall of cabinets right next to me, I wanted to keep it simple.
