Below are images of our current stock stain offering shown on African Mahogany Wood Countertops. Here are just a few of the more rare and exotic woods that I have used.Click any image to see a larger version. American WalnutShown with a stained finish, walnut is typically dark chocolate brown with tight grain.
Fiddle Back Red OakShown with a clear finish, fiddle back describes a three-dimensional gross grain figuring which has been used by violinmakers for many years.
Honduras MahoganyShown with a stained finish, mahogany is one of the richest woods that I use. Brazilian KewazingaShown with a clear finish, this exotic three-dimensional grain is achieved when Brazilian bubinga is cut in a rotary or half round fashion. Pomelle SapeleShown with a clear finish, this African exotic has a three-dimensional "peanut" shaped grain that can take on the appearance of reptile skin. Brazilian Purple HeartShown with a clear finish, its color is so dark and rich that its grain is not always real apparent. Quartered White OakShown with a clear finish, quartering log reveals distinctive "rays" or iridescent flakes. Quilted MapleShown with a clear finish, this log has an amazing three-dimensional cloudlike pattern that is strong!
Redwood BurlShown with a clear finish, unusual grain looks like intricate veins of amazing detail. Messmer's UV Plus for Hardwood DecksMessmer’s UV Plus for Hardwood Decks is a premium natural wood finish and deck stain for dense exotic hardwoods like Ipe, Mahogany, Brazilian Redwood, Massaranduba, Meranti, Pau Lupe, and Teak. UV Plus for Hardwood Decks is a penetrating wood deck stain and oil finish that beautifies and protects exterior wood, providing a natural appearance. Yes, provided the previous finish has sufficiently weathered to allow penetration of UV Plus for Hardwood Decks. Yes, UV Plus for Hardwood Decks can be used on other types of exterior wood, including cedar, redwood, pine, and pressure treated lumber. To enhance stability even further, the core of our mahogany doors contain the same solid mahogany species.
In our finished series, the panel is completely prefinished and sealed on all six sides before being installed, and as the panels are free to float between fixed edges, there is no unfinished part of the panel that may show up with time. Considered trash wood in its native land, can be used very successfully in contemporary design.
It is ideal for use on ipe, brazilian redwood, mahogany, meranti, massaranduba, teak and other exotic dense hardwoods. Before application, clean the surface with Wood & Deck Cleaner or sand to a new surface. The only way to get a shiny surface on the wood is by using a multiple coat, film forming finish. Keep in mind that the appearance of dissimilar woods will not be the same after applying the UV Plus, but generally it is very complementary. The three dimensional grain and it's dark, rich color make it one of the most dramatic woods that I have used.
I usually specify a clear finish for most exotics- the depth of the grain would be lost if stained. Solid stock has same challenges as Honduras mahogany, tear out, wormholes and fracture lines.
This results in a finish that highlights the natural beauty of the wood while still protecting it.
If a newly stained deck is rained on, the rain can force the stain up out of the pores of the wood, leaving a blotchy appearance. Do not use UV Plus for Hardwood Decks over paints or other film forming coatings, it’s designed to penetrate into bare or weathered wood surfaces. We don’t recommend clear film forming finishes on decks because they are slippery when wet, they will eventually peel, and they are difficult to maintain and recoat. Also, worm- holes (not apparent until the material is milled) can turn a very expensive piece of wood into scrap.
UV Plus for Hardwood Decks fills the pores of the wood, providing excellent water repellency that will last. When properly applied, a penetrating finish like UV Plus for Hardwood Decks will not be shiny, it will have a natural, matte look. All of these challenges mean that I incur more waste and expense but I still promote it as one of the best choices for furniture.
