Build a queen size platform bed on the cheap, with storage space underneath, for less than $30, in about an hour, and learn some basic carpentry skills in the process.
Cut from plywood and customizable to any size mattress, this platform bed eliminates the need for a box spring and adds lots of storage. It’s definitely a step in the right direction, especially considering that this has been our master bedroom for the last two weeks. Here’s how it looked once all four pieces were attached, creating a frame around the bottom edge of the bed frame. 
The next, and probably most important part is to make sure that your assembled bed frame will fit where you need it to fit. Now that the frame is built, it's time to add some slats to act as a box spring or something. Right now my 14 year old son’s bed is propped up with text books in the center because a center support broke. Be sure to line up all the brackets so that they are at the same exact height, we want this bed to sit level.
In any case, measure the outside edge width of the frame, and that is the size you need to cut all of your 1x3 boards. This is so the headboard buts up directly to the mattress, since we aren't putting an edge around the entire bed.
