New University of Otago research has found that many drowning deaths could be prevented if people learned to wait out the body’s initial shock response to cold water. A name, residential address, and (preferably residential) telephone number is required from readers who comment on ODT Online. The Otago exercise programme is a course of strength and balance enhancing exercises designed specifically to reduce the likelihood and severity of falls in individuals identified as at risk of falling.
Falls, and injury from falls, has been shown throughout the literature to have a significant impact on the quality of life in elderly patients and contribute towards costly hospitalisation in health care institutions throughout the world. Although many health professionals find that sport and exercise medicine forms a significant part of their work, most practitioners have minimal or no formal training at undergraduate or postgraduate level. This programme reflects the multidisciplinary nature of sport and exercise medicine, and offers training through the Dunedin School of Medicine, the University of Otago Schools of Physical Education and Physiotherapy, and the Department of Human Nutrition. All applications for admission to the programme must be approved by the Academic Coordinator prior to enrolment. The Postgraduate Diploma in Sport and Exercise Medicine (PGDipSEM) is for graduates in medicine, physiotherapy, physical education, human nutrition, pharmacy or sciences, or those with a comparable qualification in the health care professions.
Given the diversity of candidates' backgrounds, there are two compulsory generic papers, SPME701 Issues in Sports Medicine and SPME711 Exercise Prescription. Graduate studies in sport and exercise medicine from the University of Otago are taught through the webconference network. A compulsory three-day Residential Course complements the teaching of the introductory paper, SPME701 Issues in Sports Medicine. A senior academic representing a specific University Department or School directs each graduate paper.

The Sport and Exercise Medicine programme is making more use of computer-assisted learning and web-based learning.
In addition, the system enables course directors to bring in experts from different parts of the country - and even different parts of the world.
It was first developed in New Zealand and has a strong evidence base from studies conducted in this and other countries over the past decade. They showed the OTAGO exercise programme to be one of the most effective first line treatment strategies for elderly patients who have falls or have a significant risk of falls. It consists of a set of leg muscle strengthening and balance retraining exercises progressing in difficulty, and a walking plan. Participants are expected to exercise three times a week and go for a walk at least twice a week.

This format enables candidates from all centres and from overseas to undertake valuable postgraduate education without leaving their place of employment. Valuable interaction between students and academic staff is provided at this on-campus course held in Dunedin and instruction on library and webconferencing use is given. There is a requirement for students to complete written assignments which account for a proportion of their final graded assessment. The internal assessment may account for up to 40% of the total mark and the written paper 60%.
Students, as well as participating staff, have an opportunity to talk with these people directly.

Following a trial programme launched in Seaford in November 2013, the programme is now being rolled out across the rest of the county. This will allow students to complete a postgraduate diploma with an emphasis on a specific area of expertise.
For regulations, fees, and semester structure see University of Otago Sports Medicine Regulations. A roll out schedule with details of planned start dates for programmes in each of the three East Sussex CCG areas is enclosed. All examinations are conducted under the regulations of the University of Otago and may be completed at various regional and international venues.
Please note that start dates may be subject to change based on the number of referrals received in advance of each programme.
The programmes are free for clients to take part in and each is delivered in a non-clinical setting by specially trained instructors from Freedom Leisure and Wave Leisure Trust. Each programme consists of 16 one hour classes delivered over 16 weeks, with exercises to be practised at home between classes.
