Coaches (under the basket and two on the sidelines) move the ball and all thirteen guys jump to the ball on every pass.

Have the front player in line go out to the wing, and have the next player in line grab a basketball. The player with the ball will pass the ball to the wing player and will sprint to the other end of the court. The wing player will dribble to the middle of the court and fire a pass to the sprinting inbounder. Tip #1 - The younger the player, the closer to the basket they should be when taking the jump shot.
Remember, good shooting form is much more important than the distance the kids can shoot from. This drill will improve conditioning, passing on the run (fast break), and shooting of the break. When the players reach the other end, one of the players will take a jump shot (not a lay up). Player 3 passes to Coach 2 and cuts to the basket to receive the pass back from Coach 2 for the layup. After player 3 finishes the layup, player B passes to Coach 2 and Coach 1 for the layup at opposite basket. Note: When a player receives the first pass he is allowed to dribble once before he passes to the next coach. Player 3 passes to player 2 and cuts to the basket to receive the pass from player 2 for the layup. Player 3 passes to player 2 and cuts to the opposite wing to receive the ball from player 2 for the shot.
Player 3 passes to Coach 1 and cuts to the basket to receive the pass from player 2 for the layup.
Player 2 passes to Coach 1 and cuts to the basket to receive the pass back from Coach 1 for the layup.


Note: After the layup, Player 2, goes to player 3’s line, and player 3 goes to player 2’s line. Player 2 passes to player 1 and cuts to the left wing to receive the pass back from player 1 for a jump shot. After the shot, player 2 cuts to the opposite wing to receive the ball from Coach 2 for the second shot.
Note: Player 1 rebounds player 2’s shot and passes to the Coach 2 and goes to player2’s line. Player 3 passes the ball to Coach 2 and cuts to the basket to receive the ball from player 1 for the layup.
Player 2 passes the ball to coach 1 and cuts to the basket to receive the pass from player 3 for the layup.
Player 1 passes to player 3, player 3 reverses to player 1 and cuts to the basket to receive the pass from player 1 for the layup. After passing to player 3, player 1 cuts to the basket to receive the pass from player 2 for the layup. After passing to player 1, player 2 cuts to the basket to receive the pass from the Coach 2 for the layup.
Player 2 passes to player 3 at baseline then cuts to the three point line to receive the ball back from player 3 for the shot. A quick stop and jump shot is probably the most important offensive maneuver used by today’s players. Players often get into the habit of jumping forward too much and come down on their defensive man if he is in good position. This drill will teach the basketball player the art of jump stopping while moving at a high speed and get his shot off while maintaining balance. Back in the 1960’s I was enamored of a philosophy of basketball coaching I gleaned from a book called, “Blitz Basketball”, and of the defensive philosophy of Marquette U., as published in a book, “Mosquito Defense”, by their coach, Al McGuire. When combined breaking with my emphasis on defense, I felt I had a formidable recipe for fun and winning basketball.  It proved me right for many years, winning over 75% of the time with US teams and 80% with international club teams.
Lots of drilling to make it work and to get the proper mind set -  including breaking lanes, getting out and running, setting up “dummy” breaks to learn when was the right opportunity to break, continuous fast breaks for conditioning, good passing, spacing & timing passes, scoring on the run and how to finish.
After we have everyone thinking break, and knowing how and when to run, the kinds of passes we need to make, keeping floor spacing, etc., then comes the release man or “streaker”, secondary break and into half court offense. The following are starter and advanced drills and will combine passing, dribbling and shooting a layin.


In Diagram A below, we just use the half-court for a starter break, until the timing is perfected in the coordinated movement of all three players. The return pass for the layin should be thrown well and timed so that no dribble is required before the shot. If a player expects to be a complete basketball player, he or she should practice a lot from the flatfooted position. Let the passing line start the drill by hitting the cutter at about the head of the free throw line as that player breaks quickly to the basket. All three lines rotate so that each player, at one time or another, becomes a feeder, retriever, and shooter. After perfecting the 3-man start, have the players continue in the routes they previously ran to half-court, now going the length of the floor to finish the break.
One group is under the basket to retrieve, another group at the side to pass to the cutter, and the cutting group.
Keeping vision on the ball and staying one step in from the sideline, until the free throw line extended, the outside players have been sprinting at full speed to catch up with the ball. There is another player standing outside the endline who becomes the next #1 when the ball comes around again.
When even with the FT line, both #1 and #2 cut sharply toward the basket, looking for a pass from #3. The players who will be receiving and returning passes at each spot, stand on the sideline, while the next players in line at each spot will stay off the court. The breakers stay on their own side of the floor, running in line extending from the free throw lane on the starting end to the free throw line on the opposite end.
When #21rebounds and begins the pass to #2, #3 starts diagonally across the free throw circle toward #2’s side of the floor, and receives the pass about where the 3-point line and circle meet. Have them take turns retrieving and passing to their own line, where the receiver immediately takes a jump shot without dribbling. After the layin, hustle out of the way of the waiting rebounder (at the #1 spot) and go around to the #2 spot on the opposite side of the floor from which you just ran.
