Week of Gratitude: Giving Thanks to Start the New Year!
The U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association and Foundation held its third annual Week of Gratitude 10-14 January. Alumni Association and Foundation staff expressed gratitude to the alumni community, reaching more than 3,500 donors and volunteers. Watch videos of appreciation on the Alumni Association and Foundation’s Facebook page. During the week, alumni, parents and friends submitted their photos and comments on an online commemorative mosaic of Bancroft Hall. You can still view the mosaic and add a photo of your own. The work the Alumni Association and Foundation does for the Naval Academy, the Brigade of Midshipmen and the alumni community is made possible through your generous support. We appreciate you!
Bauernschmidt ’94 and Farrell ’04 Make Navy History
CAPT Amy Bauernschmidt ’94, USN, and CDR Billie J. Farrell ’04, USN, made history this month. The ABRAHAM LINCOLN recently deployed from San Diego, CA, under the leadership of Bauernschmidt, the first woman to command a U.S. aircraft carrier. Bauernschmidt, who previously served as the aircraft carrier’s executive officer, took over command last August. Farrell became the first woman to take command of the 224-year-old warship CONSTITUTION on 21 January. Farrell previously served as the executive officer aboard VICKSBURG. The CONSTITUTION, based at Boston’s Charlestown Navy Yard, is the world’s oldest commissioned warship still afloat and has a reputable naval history. Bravo Zulu!
Celebrate Our 50th Year of Alumni Travel
Our first tour was to London in 1972. This tour was offered to alumni on the coastal area from New York to Norfolk, VA, as a trial, its success led to what the travel program is today. In 2022, we are offering more than 50 destinations worldwide, including cruises and land tours. Domestic and international tours are open to alumni, friends and family. Our most popular tours include: 1. Alaska, 2. Safaris, 3. England to Eagle’s Nest, 4. Antarctica, 5. Anything with trains. While we are still in uncertain times for travel, due to Covid-19, we are hopeful. We work with tour operators to ensure safety protocols are in place. Most of our tour operators have begun more relaxed cancelation policies. Since October 2021, 100 of our travelers embarked on our tours with amazing memories. We hope to celebrate this 50-year milestone with you in a safe and enjoyable way.
