Class of 1994 Takes on McGarvey’s Pub
Example content imageChris Hannan, Kevin Havens and Jim MacLaughlin, all Class of 1994, purchased McGarvey’s from longtime owner Mike Ashford in 2016 and are still learning what the place means to locals. Traditions range from USMC birthday down to families’ Christmas Eve reservations. (What you might not know: the business has been a bar since 1871 and the name comes from Ashford’s great uncle, Manus McGarvey, a tattooed streetcar conductor in Chicago who was missing fingers and drank whiskey out of a teacup.)

Gettysburg Leadership Program
The Center for Experiential Leadership Development conducts a two-day Leader Development Encounter in Gettysburg, PA, for varsity team captains and Brigade stripers to convey meaning, purpose and operationalization of team leadership at USNA. This annual offsite is supported by the Foundation and the Class of 1977. Watch a video about the most recent trip and what it meant to ’77.
WWII Veteran Video Mission
19-year-old Rishi Sharma has made it his mission to collect WWII veterans’ stories before it is too late. “Five hundred war veterans die every day and with them go the stories of bloodshed and sacrifice,” he says. “What good is what they had to go through if we don’t learn from it?” Every day he interviews at least one American combat veteran, estimating it will take about 10 years to complete. If you know of a candidate, visit the website for more information about connecting.

The creation of Naval Surface Group Western Pacific this fall was one of many corrective actions the Navy launched after a string of mishaps and collisions in the Pacific. Alumni involved with the review and implementation of this unit include ADM John Richardson ’82, USN; VADM Thomas Rowden ’82, USN; CAPT Richard Dromerhauser ’90, USN; VADM Phil Sawyer ’83, USN; and ADM Gary Roughead ’73, USN (Ret.).
How I Made It—Curbeam ’84
Growing up in Baltimore, MD, CAPT Robert Curbeam ’84, USN (Ret.), would stare at the sky at dusk hoping for a glimpse of SKYLAB. He also loved planes. Perhaps these were signs of what was to come at Top Gun and NASA (with multiple spacewalks under his belt, even though he says his first went poorly). His biggest influence? His mom!
Selective Memories
Ship Selection Night is approaching, and in honor of this evolving event that had much smaller and quieter roots than the NFL-draftlike event that it is today, we want to hear from you about your favorite memories about picking your ship. Were you nervous? Did you get the last pick or were you victorious? Was yours a small ward room affair? Email us your story and it could land in the pages of Shipmate.
Modly ’83: Knowledge and Naval Service
The new Under Secretary of the Navy, Thomas B. Modly ’83, was just sworn in in Memorial Hall and has already made clear his continued love of learning. He is using the Academy’s motto, “Ex Scientia Tridens,” as his battle cry.
