| Hern ’24: The Story of a Boston Bombing Survivor |
MIDN Aaron Hern ’24, of Martinez, CA, was just 11 years old, standing in a crowd, along with his father, Alan, a 1993 U.S. Naval Academy graduate, and younger sister, Abby, to cheer on his mother, Katherine ’94, in her first Boston Marathon. He was standing near the finish line when a bomb went off close to him on 15 April 2013. He suffered shrapnel wounds to his legs. The Boston Marathon bombing was a domestic terrorist attack that took place during the annual Boston Marathon. Brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev planted two homemade pressure cooker bombs, which detonated near the finish line of the race 14 seconds and 210 yards apart. Hundreds were injured, 17 people lost limbs, and three people were killed, including Martin Richard, 8 years old, who was standing just inches away from Aaron. Ten years, after the bombing, Hern looks back to recount his story of survival with Jeremy Schaap on ESPN. |

| The Future Plans for the National Museum of the U.S. Navy |
The Navy has unveiled five design options for the service’s new national museum, which is slated to open in 2025 and provide greater access for the public.
The concepts stemmed from the Navy’s Artistic Ideas competition in which 37 architectural firms submitted proposals. The Navy then selected designs from five firms: Bjarke Ingels Group; DLR Group; Frank Gehry Partners; Perkins & Will; and Quinn Evans. The new museum, to be built outside the Navy Yard’s Tingey Gate in Washington, DC, will take up approximately 270,000 square feet and include about 100,000 square feet of net gallery space. The Navy announced the preferred location for the museum last October. |
