CO of PORTER is a ’98 Grad
Example content imageThe commanding officer of PORTER, one of the two Navy destroyers that launched cruise missiles at a Syrian military airfield, is CDR Andria Slough ’98, USN, who graduated with a Bachelor of Science in ocean engineering. CDR Slough received a congratulatory call from the President on 9 April.
Hurley ’04: His Letter to His Dad
Shipmate recently published a feature on our favorite golfer, Billy Hurley ’04, who just played in his first Masters. We also had the opportunity to sit down with him for a video interview. Hurley recently published a very moving letter to his late father whose 2016 disappearance and death made headlines.

AcademyWomen marks its 14th year hosting the Career Workshop and Officer Women Leadership Symposium (OWLS) for all female military officers, cadets/senior enlisted and veterans on 25-27 April at the Women’s Memorial in Arlington, VA. Our Interview with the Next Commandant
CAPT Robert "Robb" B. Chadwick II ’91, USN, was recently selected to be the 87th Commandant of Midshipmen. He has been around the world from the East Coast of Africa to the Arabian Sea and picked up a Stockdale Award along the way, but returning to the Academy may be the best part of his career yet … did we mention his father was ‘Dant when he was in high school?

For myself and many of my shipmates, our deployment to the Persian Gulf in January of 1988 in support of Operation Earnest Will was our first operational tour. Little did we know at the time that we would participate in the first major U.S. Navy surface engagement since World War II.”
Tomlinson ’01: Navy Pilots Refusing to Fly
More than 100 Navy flight instructors recently refused to fly due to safety issues with oxygen systems. Lucas Tomlinson ’01, a producer for Fox News covering the State Department, writes that in the last five years, physiological episodes have nearly quadrupled on the T-45 training jet. The Navy is now looking at grounding the fleet.
Tseng ’08: From SEAL to Start-up
Brandon Tseng ’08 has kicked down doors in Afghanistan. You don’t have to tell him how frightening this can be. He and his brother recently developed a small autonomous drone that can maneuver through buildings and small spaces instead of putting troops in harm’s way, going from napkin sketch to battlefield deployment in just two and a half years.
Father and Son at Academy Sox Game
It was a very big day for Navy baseball and one Boston fan in particular when the Red Sox played at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium on 1 April—CAPT Roger Buck ’50, USN (Ret.), of Newport, RI, joined his son Bruce Buck ’77 of Crofton, MD. Both are former captains of Navy baseball. In addition, Roger knew Max Bishop, played against George Bush Sr. and, as a Sox fan, plans to have “Cause of Death: Boston Red Sox” on his headstone.
