We are continuing to closely monitor and evaluate developments of the coronavirus (COVID-19), and follow guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and local health and government authorities in North Carolina, Pennsylvania and New York. Please rest assured, we will only hold camp if we believe it is safe. The CTQS-WAQI's highest priority is the health and well-being of all of our students, friends and instructors.
This simple yet effective course combines exercise and functional meditation, and is designed to provide participants with tools for improving sleep and for learning and improving classic tai chi form and function.
Improved sleep quality is a necessary component of robust health. For centuries people have practiced Qigong and Tai Chi to improve energy, deepen relaxation and promote healing. For decades Western science has confirmed these results. Regular practice of Qigong and Tai Chi has been shown to reduce stress, improve sleep and restore vitality. In this program Master Yang shares Qigong and Tai Chi practices that are challenging yet gentle enough to be used throughout your life. The tai chi component is part of a continuing sequence drawn from Grandmaster Feng Zhiqiang's Chen 48 Form and two-person training methods to deepen our understanding of the meaning and energy flow of form movements. Return home with a set of straightforward, powerful exercises and meditations to practice daily to cultivate robust health, tranquility and vitality. This course is suitable for both beginners and advanced practitioners.
The curriculum will be two-fold including practices for sleep enhancement and continuing instruction in the classic Chen 48 form with interpretation and practice of push hands application. (See the Chen 48 form information below.)
Sleep Enhancement and Continuing Chen 48 Form will consist of Dr. Yang's Functional Meditation as well as carefully selected physical exercises. Functional Meditation addresses the roots of daily challenges by placing them in the context of positive, abiding truths of human experience. In this way practitioners develop resources for converting causes of stress into opportunities for constructive personal growth. The physical exercises consist of Qigong and Tai Chi exercises—both still and moving—to promote calm, balance, relaxation, and healing energy flow. The tai chi movements are chosen from the classic Chen Tai Chi 48 form and promote flow, power, relaxation and balance.
This simple and fun, yet effective training, blends Chinese philosophy, healing and martial arts with Western science and is specifically designed for self-healing. At the end of this training participants will bring home a complete routine designed to yield significant benefits in a short period of time. A recent NIH-funded study using Dr. Yang’s Qigong and Tai Chi program demonstrated significant positive effects on sleep and anxiety. Other high quality studies have documented improvements and even the elimination of chronic pain among participants.
This year’s training will also feature two guest speakers:
▪ Dr. Roberta Lee, Whole Health Director at the Southern Arizona VA
healthcare System; and
▪ Dr. Linda Northam, a board certified psychiatrist practicing at
Boughton Hospital in NC.
Roberta Lee, MD is Whole Health Director at the Southern Arizona VA Healthcare
System (Tucson, Arizona). The VA has a national initiative to incorporate
integrative medicine principles into medical care. Veterans are learning how to
manage their health by developing skills in areas such as Tai Qi /Qi gong, mind/body
medicine, yoga, and more. Dr. Lee’s book, The SuperStress Solution( Random House
2009) provides practical information on how to get chronic stress and anxiety under
control. Board Certified in internal medicine and integrative medicine, she is also
an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Arizona’s College
of Medicine
Dr. Linda Northam is a board-certified general psychiatrist. She received her
undergraduate degree in Fine Arts: Dance from SUNY Purchase and her medical degree
from the University of Tennessee. She completed her adult psychiatry residency and a
child and adolescent fellowship at Brown University. Dr. Northam currently practices
psychiatry at Broughton Hospital in North Carolina.
Each speaker will provide professional insights on sleep from the perspectives of
psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation. Together they will help us integrate
wisdom from the East and the West to yield the most effective and efficient approaches
toward improved sleep.
This five-day intensive training will provide all contact hours required for Evidence-based Qigong (EBQ™) instructor certification.
