Turpin took an early lead and stretched it to 17 (21-38) by the intermission.  The Firebirds played them even in the second half but the damage had already been done.  Jared McCorkle scored a team high 14 points but was the only West player able to achieve double figures.

OGBR’s Journey to the Tourney Event at Lakota West’s Main Street Arena.
West opened against Hamilton Heights Christian Academy, (Chatannoga, Tennessee).  The Hawks were playing in their third game of the season as they entered the evening with a 2-0 record and ranked #5 in the country by USA Today girls basketball.   West led by a point (23-22) at the intermission and led (27-26) after the fifth lead change of the game occurred at the 3:54 mark in the third stanza.  At that point the Hamilton Hawks used their superior height (starting team 6’+ average, with a 6’ 7” post player) to wear down the Firebirds and began to pull away.  Abby Prohaska recorded a scoring/rebounding double double (13 pts./10 reb.).  Freshman Kailyn Dudukovich scored 8 points and picked off 3 rebounds in her high school debut.  Sarah Jones and Madisyn Oxley each dished off a team high 3 assists.

OGBR Journey to the Tourney, 2nd Day.
Lakota West’s full court pressure to open the game left the Beavers in a daze as the Firebirds raced out to an 18 point lead in the first half.  Abby Prohaska led the game opening charge by making 4 out of 5 trey attempts while scoring 16 points by the halftime break.  Abby had her second double double in two nights ending the evening with 18 points and 10 boards.  She also picked off a game high 5 steals. Prohaska, Ally Haar, and freshman Jordaynia Ivie chipped in with 3 assists each.  Twelve Firebirds saw action on the court with eight contributing to the scoring.

Stats
11/29 Oak Hills
W

75-32

2-1 1-0

Oak Hills could never find the combination to unlock West’s pressure defense as the Firebirds forged a 30 to 4 point advantage in points off of turnovers.  West subs were shuttling in and out of the game before the first quarter was concluded.  For the evening the Firebird subs tallied 40 points off the bench compared to the Highlanders 16 bench points.  Thirteen West players played significant minutes with eleven contributing to the scoring.  Starter Neveah Dean was the games high scorer with 15 points which was also a new career personal best.  Dean tallied her 15 points in less than 15 minutes of on court time.  Others scoring in double figures were Jasmine Ballow with 12, and Ally Haar with 10, both coming off the bench.  Abby Prohaska led the Firebirds with 8 rebounds and had game highs of 6 steals and 5 assists.

Stats
12/2 Sycamore W 69-24 3-1 2-0

Sycamore spent the first quarter just trying to figure out how to get the ball over the midcourt stripe and ended the quarter trailing 21-2.  After West dialed back the defensive pressure they still outscored the Aviators at a 2 to 1 pace for remainder of the game.  Four Firebirds scored in double figures paced by Nevaeh Dean and Jasmine Ballew, each with 13.  Senior starter Abby Prohaska and her freshman understudy, Kailyn Dudukovich both tallied 12 points. Ballew had the game high rebounding total with 7 and Prohaska had a game high assist total of 7. Brianna Henderson, working her way back from a recent ankle injury, picked off a game high 5 steals in only 11 minutes of playing time. West’s 45 point win came with all starters logging less than 19 minutes of playing time.

Stats

W

69-24

4-1 3-0

The Lakota West bench players scored 25 points, one more point than the entire Lakota East team.  This was another no lead change, no tie, no doubt about it game that pushed West’s lead in the East/West series to 32 wins against 4 losses. Abby Prohaska led all scorers with 19 points, and also led the Firebirds in rebounding (6), steals (3), and shot blocks (2).  Madisyn Oxley and Neveah Dean each contributed 10 points.
