Moeller
at Nippert Stadium

L

14-47

0-1 0-0

Lakota West scored first , with 2:21 remaining in the first quarter, via a 14 yard Tony White pass to Zelwyn Robinson.  Moeller cut the lead to one (7-6) twenty-three seconds before the first quarter ended and took the lead for good (13-7) with 2:29 remaining in the first half.  The Crusaders took control of the game after the intermission outscoring the Firebirds 27-7.  West's final scoring play was another White to Robinson pass early in the final stanza, this one covering 34 yards.  Will Nguyen made both of the Firebird extra point kicks.  Robinson led the team in receiving making 6 catches for a total of 84 yards.  White threw the ball 38 times completing 18 for a total of 190 yards, but was victimized by 3 Moeller interceptions.   Marcus Aull was the games leading tackler with 15 (13 solo, 2 assisted).  His 13 solo tackles ties the Lakota West single game record. (see football archives record section)

Stats
9/2 at Centerville L 35-52 0-2 0-0 Lakota West allowed Centerville to score on three big plays (78 yard run, 35 yard pass interception, and 56 yard run) early in the game.  Even though the Firebirds ultimately gained more yards (413 to 326) and had more first downs (19-14) they could never recover from that initial 21 point hole.  Elk big plays kept the Firebirds at bay.  After a 6 play 74 yard TD drive by West cut the deficit to 14 in the third quarter Centerville restored their lead to 21 with a 95 yard kick return TD just seconds later.  Zelwyn Robinson had another hugely productive night rushing for 152 yards and three TD's, amassing 141 yards on kick returns, and adding 36 yards on pass receptions.  Tony White passed for 150 yards including one to Payton Porterfield that covered 31 yards for a TD. Porterfield led the team in pass receptions with three totaling 75 yards.  Running back Tayvion Ware scored his first TD as a Firebird with a 1 yard plunge in the third quarter.   Kicker Will Nguyen converted on all five extra point attempts.  Marcus Aull was the games leading tackler with 12 (10 solo).  Stats
9/9 Wayne L 7-51 0-3 0-0

Wayne put on a first half clinic befitting a team ranked #1 in Ohio (by JJ Huddle) and #19 in the USA (by Max Preps).  The Warriors outscored the Firebirds 48-0 while gaining 323 yards on 29 plays to West's 16 yards on 28 plays.  Playing for pride in the second half the Firebirds  were able to score a TD while holding the Warriors to a field goal.  A Tony White to Zelwyn Robinson pass play in the fourth quarter went 54 yards for a TD and West's lone score.  Will Nguyen converted the extra point.  White completed 10 passes totalling 111 yards.  Robinson gained 89 yards receiving with 6 catches.  The Firebirds rushing game was non-existent however netting a minus 22 yards  from 19 rushing attempts. Tyler Green was the games leading tackler with six solo stops which included 2 tackles-for-loss.

Stats
9/16 at Mason L

7-38

0-4 0-1

Mason opened the scoring with a touchdown three  minutes into the first quarter.  Zelwyn Robinson then ran the ensuing kickoff back a school record 99 yards to tie the game at 7-7.  Robinson's runback topped the old record mark of 98 yards set by Mike Lovell in 2001 and matched by Jawan Holmes in 2013.  Unfortunately that proved to be the highpoint of the Firebirds evening.  Will Nguyen added the extra point following the Robinson TD.  Maurice Smith led the team in tackling with 9 total, 7 solo.  Clayton Bell had a pass interception and was close behind Smith with 8 tackle, 4 solo.

Stats
9/23 Fairfield

L

7-29

0-5 0-2

A West miscue on a punt snap four minutes into the game yielded a safety giving Fairfield the first lead 0-2.  With 2:24 remaining in the first quarter Zelwyn Robinson  put the Firebirds in the lead, 7-2, with an 83 yard TD run followed by a Will Nguyen extra point kick.  That lead lasted exactly 13 seconds as the Indians scored on a 98 yard kick off return to regain the lead 7-8.  The Firebirds stayed within a point until 1:34 before the intermission at which time the Indians stretched their lead to 7-15.  Fairfield scored twice more in the third quarter to set the final score at 7-29.  Robinson was the games leading rusher gaining 160 yards on 22 carries.  Defensive back Maurice Smith was the leading tackler in the game with 10 stops (8 solo) including one tackle for loss.

Stats
9/30 at Princeton L

7-26

0-6 0-3

Princeton led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter and were never seriously challenged.  Zelwyn Robinson was the game leader in all-purpose yardage gained with 145 (75 receiving yards and 70 rushing yards).  Robinson plunged into the end zone from two yards out to produce the Firebird TD as the first half ended with West trailing 7-20.  Will Nguyen kicked the extra point.   Marcus Aull picked off two Viking passes bringing his career pass interception total to 9, a new school record.*  Defensive linemanTyler Bentley led the team in total tackles with 7 (6 solo). Aull followed with 6 (5 solo).  *for old record go to the westfirebirds football archives section.

Stats
10/7 Oak Hills W

49-21

1-6 1-3

The Firebirds introduced a new look on offense and it paid off.  Former running back Zelwyn Robinson slid into the quarter backs spot and Brian Gillis moved into Zelyn's running back slot leaving a befuddled Oak Hills defense  in their wake. Robinson rushed the ball with QB keeper plays 26 times for 291 yards (11.2 yards/carry) resulting in six touchdowns, a new Lakota district record.  Gillis carried the ball 20 times  for an even 100 yards and yet another TD.  Robinson opened the scoring on the second play of the game running the ball 75 yards for a touchdown. Later in the quarter Gillis taking a hand off from Robinson ran the ball in from 28 yards out.  Robinson's scoring runs were 75, 13, 5, 38, 37, and 47 yards respectively with all the points in the bank before the third quarter ended.  Will Nguyen was 7 for 7 kicking the extra points.   Robinson brought his career touchdown total up to  44 topping the previous Lakota district high of 40 held by  Mike Lovell of Lakota West since 2001.  Marcos Aull got another pick to raise his own Lakota West career record for  pass interception to 10.  Other standout defensive performance were turned in by Xavier Peters, Tayvion Ware, and Steven Faucheux, with team leading totals of 7 tackles each.  The Oak Hills QB was sacked six times with three of those sacks credited to Faucheux.

Stats
10/14 at Middletown W

33-7

2-6 2-3

The first half belonged to the defenses with Lakota West holding Middletown scoreless and  West's 'D' being credited with the only touchdown before the intermission.  Early in the first quarter Tayvion Ware blocked a Middie punt which then rebounded into the Middletown endzone where Clayton Bell recovered it for seven points.  The only offensive score in the first half came just 19 seconds before the halftime horn sounded when Will Nguyen split the uprights with a 31 yard field goal. This field goal started a pattern of Firebird field goals followed by long TD runs that continued through the third stanza.  Following Nguyen's first FG came a Zelwyn Robinson 48 yard TD run, followed by a Nguyen 40 yard FG, followed by a Brian Gillis 68 yard TD run, followed by a third Nguyen field goal this one from 24 yards putting the game in running clock mode, 30-0.  On the kickoff following the third FG the Middie return man appeared to be on his way for the home team's first score at which point he was met by Nguyen the last defender who made the stop, forcing, and recovering a Middletown fumble.  Not yet finished with his evenings work Nguyen drilled a 35 yard FG early in the fourth quarter ending his evening with 4 made field goals tying the Lakota West single game FG record set by J.C. Capsper in 2004.  He added 3 for 3 extra point kicks totaling a game high 15 points scored.   Zelwyn Robinson (60 yards passing) and Tony White (43 yards passing) combined for a 100+ yards through the air.  They were a combined 5 for 14 with no interceptions.  Payton Porterfield led in pass receptions with 4 for 60 yards.  Zelwyn Robinson, doing a little bit of everything had a total offensive output of 172 yards. ( 69 rushing, 60 passing, 43 receiving)  Brian Gillis was the games leading rusher with 95 yards on 12 attempts.  Defender Tayvion Ware had the longest run of the evening, recovering a Middie fumble on the West 10 yard line and carrying it back to the Middletown 5 yard line (85 yards).   Xavier Peters was the games leading tackler with 8 (4 solo).  Middletown spoiled the Firebird's shutout with a 24 yard TD run crossing the goal line just nine seconds left on the clock.

Stats
10/21 Colerain L 0-31 2-7 2-4

West could not find the key to cracking the Colerain defense.  Tony White passed the ball for a game high 103 yards, completing 9 of 15 throws and Zelwyn Robinson made 8 catches for 94 yards but none resulted in scores.  Xavier Peters had the leading tackle total, twelve (8 solo, 1 sack).  The Cardinal defense was especially tough against the run. Although Robinson had a team high of 42 yards rushing, the Firebirds net yards rushing was a negative two yards.  This was Colerain's 58th consecutive GMC win.

Stats
10/28 Lakota East L

14-21

2-8 2-5

Lakota East controlled the line of scrimmage throughout the first half.  By the intermission the Thunder Hawks had what appeared to be a comfortable 21-0. The half ended with the ball safely in their hands where it had been residing for 75% of the time.  West came out for the second half with renewed energy scoring on an 80 yard, 14 play drive in the third stanza and  again on an 80 yard, 9 play drive for a second TD in the fourth quarter.  The Firebirds trailed 14-21 with 5:45 remaining.  However,  the Hawks converted key third and fourth downs and ran out the clock for a win.  QB Tony White III had both Lakota West TD's with runs, the first from 21 yards out and the second from 2 yards away.  White also completed 15 of 18 pass attempts for a game high 102 yards through the air. Eight of White's completions were to Zelwyn Robinson.   Robinson was the Firebird leader in all purpose yards with 120 (71 rushing & 49 receiving).  Will Nguyen aded two extra point kicks ending the season with a perfect 23 for 23 extra point conversions  (school season record tying 100%).  Marcus Aull intercepted a pass to raise his own Lakota West career record to eleven.  Xavier Peters was the games leading tackler with 11 stops (10 solo tackles).
