KY Mattress and Tyreek Price were the only two players to score in double figures registering 14 points and 13 points respectively. Price scored 9 of his 13 by shooting 50% (3 of 6) from behind the three point arc. Price's 13 point total was a new personal best for him. Mitch Webber was only used for 13 minutes but that was long enough for him to pull down a game high 11 rebounds which tied his personal best total. Webber was also credited with a game high 4 assists. West dominated every facet of the game. They led the Cards in rebounds 40 to 26, and had only 8 turnovers to Colerains 19. Over the next eight minutes the Highlanders went on a 14-2 run which ended with them up by 11 (42-53) with four minutes remaining in the game. The Firebirds resorted to the tactic of speeding up the offense and fouling on defense to get the ball back. The fouling part was less successful with Oak Hills making 16 of 19 free throws and a basket holding the West comeback attempt to just 4 points. For the game the Highlanders made 28 of 34 (82.4%) of their freebies, the last 10 in a row. The Firebirds were just 4 of 7 from the charity stripe for the entire game. Then, just as in the game against Lakota East four days ago, the Firebirds could only score a single 2 point field goal in the entire third quarter. The Lancers responded with 20 third quarter points however, rather than 3 as the Hawks had done four days earlier. As a result of the home team’s third stanza offensive woes the scales had been tipped from 9 points in their favor to 9 points in LaSalle’s favor after the third quarter dust had settled. The Firebirds played the Lancers essentially even in the final stanza but the damage had already been done. LaSalle, by slowing the game down and making 12 of 13 from the charity stripe as West fouled to get the ball back, managed to extend their lead by another 3 points to set the final score at 55-43. The first quarter ended with West leading 11-7, a lead they held until the Crusaders edged ahead by a point (11-12) midway through the second quarter. At the half Moeller's advantage was only two (16-18) and that was erased 2:37 into the third stanza when a Jacob Biehle field goal produced the second tie of the game (21-21). The Crusader run was fueled by three deep treys and aided by a pair of untimely Firebird turnovers. The Firebirds repaid the Vikings hospitality by keeping the margin of victory below 20 points (67-49) as they cruised to their 24th consecutive league win. The outcome was never in doubt as the Firebirds scored the opening basket, took an eight point first quarter lead (17-9), moved their advantage up to 19 points (37-18) at the half, and held a maximum lead of twenty-nine (60-31) before clearing the bench early in the final stanza. The Firebirds were led in scoring by their three varsity veterans; Nia Staples with 17 points, Lexi Wasan with 13, and Danielle Wells with 10. This win gave West sole possession of the GMC lead leaving six other conference schools with 2-1 records trailing in their wake. Middletown came into this game with a 4-0 record and high hopes of ending a 30 game losing streak against Lakota West. These hopes were dashed early as the Firebirds came out with their characteristic defensive pressure, scored first, and buried the Middies 19-6 in the first quarter. Four Firebirds scored in double figures; Madisyn Oxley (12), Danielle Wells (11), Alexandra Haar (11), and Lexi Wasan (10). Both Oxley and Haar's totals were their single game personal best's. Bryana Henderson just missed scoring in double figures (9), and dished out a team co-best 4 assists sharing leadership in that stat category with Sarah Jones. Christine Laritz came off the bench to capture a game high and personal best 11 rebounds in less than 12 minutes. Abby Prohaska led the Firebirds pressure defense with 3 steals and 7 defensive boards (8 total rebounds). Prohaska got the starting call and logged over 16:20 minutes of court time as she continues working her way back from a preseason injury. With this win, his 317th, Andy Fishman has set a new Lakota School District record for the most career wins by a basketball coach. |

Lakota West conducted a basketball clinic at Colerain's expense. Seven Firebirds rained down treys on the shell shocked Cardinals making 11 of 19. An eighth Firebird was fouled while trying to get off a trey and made all three of the resulting free throws. Four Firebirds went to the free throw line and made a cumulative 11 of 12. The trio of Firebird four year veterans; Nia Staples, Danielle Wells, and Lexis Wasan led the rout. Staples scored 24 pts. making 11/12 from the field, which included 2/2 from beyond the arc. She also recorded game high's of 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals. Ironically she was the player who missed the free throw. Danielle Wells tallied 13 points which included a perfect 6 of 6 from the free throw line. Lexi Wasan scored 11 by making 4 of 7 from short range and 1 of 1 from long range. Wasan recorded the only shot block of the contest. The Firebirds played at a frenetic pace stealing the ball 18 times and causing the flustered Cardinals to commit a turn over a minute with most coming before they could cross the mid court line. West scored 53 points off of Colerain turnovers. In contrast the Cardinals scored zero points off of Firebird turnovers. |

Another game with no ties, no lead changes, and no chance to win if you were wearing an Oak Hills uniform. To the Highlanders credit they never got down by more than 29 points and held the final margin to 23, an improvement over the fate of recent Firebird opponents. The West scoring load was once again carried by the Firebird senior 'Big Three' of Danielle Wells with 17, Lexi Wasan with 14, and Nia Staples with 11. Well's needed only 9 shots to accumulate her 17 points. She made 7 of 9 from the field including her only 2 trey attempts and added a free throw on an old fashioned three point play. To put the cherry on top Wells blocked an Oak Hills shot for the first shot block of her illustrious 88 game high school varsity career. Wasan shot a red hot 70% from the field, ending the evening with 14 points. Wasan and Wells had game high steals totals of 5 each. Wells also led the team in rebounding with 6 boards. Nia Staples had a game high and career personal best 8 assists and is rapidly closing in on the Lakota West all-time career assist record. |

As the game opened it looked like just another night and another blowout win for the Firebirds. At the mid point of the first quarter West led 11-0 as East struggled just to get the ball up the court. However, East pulled themselves together and mounted a spirited comeback from their bad start. The West shooting cooled down later in the first frame enabling East to cut their deficit to 7 (11-4) by the end of the quarter. East, gaining confidence, then battled back cutting the West lead to 4 (29-25) at the intermission. Against the odds East went into the final quarter down by just 5 (40-35), and mounted a 5-0 run to open the final stanza. With under six minutes to go the Hawks had both the ball and a two point lead (40-42). Following a failed Hawk field goal attempt Nia Staples took charge of the game. She made a trey, aided by a Madisyn Oxley assist pass, that brought the home crowd to their feet and propelled West back into the lead. Over the final 5:30 Staples scored 12 of the Firebirds last 19 points. While she was scoring a dozen the whole Thunderhawk team could only add 10 to their total. Staples registered another double-double as she finished the evening with a game leading 10 rebounds. Danielle Wells, hampered by foul trouble which limited her playing time to under 20 minutes still netted 15 points with 4 of them coming in the critical last 5:30. Wells was also the team steals leader with 3. |

As the old saying goes "All good things must someday come to an end." and in this game it was the Firebirds record setting win streak that was the thing that ended. West last lost a game nearly a year ago, to Alter by one point, also at the Kemba Festival. They had since won 31 consecutive games prior to the loss to Wayne tonight. This game had nine lead changes with the largest lead having been owned by West, 6-2, early in the first quarter. The ninth and final lead change came with 2:56 remaining in the game when a made trey put the Warriors on top to stay 35-36. The Firebird's ultimate undoing can be traced to poor shooting both at the free throw line 41.7% (5 of 12) and beyond the arc 13.3% (2 of 15). This contrasts to the their comparable numbers of 81.8% (9 of11) at the free throw stripe, an 42.1% (8 of 19) from beyond the arc on the first night of the Festival. Lexi Wasan, the only Firebird who shot well, led the team in scoring with 12 points making 6 of 10 shots from the field. Nia Staples tallied 10 points to add her name to the Lakota basketball 1000 point honor roll. Staples also recorded the high rebound total for the game with 9, and a team high steals total of 4. Danielle Wells had the top assist total of 3 to go with 7 points. This year's Kemba Classic final game was perhaps the most anticipated Holiday game in Ohio featuring the states #1 (Lakota West) and #6 (Dayton Wayne) teams. This back and forth contest lived up to it's billing with a return match keenly anticipated in the post season. |

Mason began the game fired up and bent on revenge for their season opening loss to Lakota West, the only blemish on their record. Cheered on by a packed home gym the Comets charged out to a 9 point lead (6-15) following two consecutive made treys. The Firebirds calmly weathered this early storm and Mason was only able to cash in on one more three point field goal for the remainder of the game. West methodically reeled in the White and Green to tie the score at the half (29-29). The Comets came out following the intermission and fashioned a 9-0 scoring run in the first half of the third stanza. At that point Alexandra Haarr stemmed the tide with a deep three igniting another Firebird run that left West trailing by only a single ball possession (38-41) going into the final frame. Nia Staples tied the game (43-43) with a pair of clutch free throws with 6 minutes remaining. With 5:38 showing Lexi Wasan, aided by a nifty assist pass from Christine Laritz, drove to the hoop to put West ahead to stay (45-43). The Comets were stopped on their next possession and were totally ineffective when having to play from behind the faster Firebirds at crunch time. West finished out the last four minutes of the contest with a 9-2 scoring run to win their 32nd consecutive GMC game going away. Nia Staples was the game high scorer with 20 points, making 9 of her 11 free throw attempts. Lexi Wasan was the second leading scorer of the game adding 15 points to the winning total. Danielle Wells, darting in from her guard position, helped battle the huge Comet front line to a standstill by capturing a team high 10 rebounds. While dealing with Wells under the basket the Comets often looked as though they were trying to get a lamb chop from a wolf. Rounding out the scoring were Wells with 8, Haar with 6, hitting on 2 of 2 from long range, and Sara Jones with 5 points. Bryana Henderson and Madisyn Oxley also contributed significant minutes to this signature win. |

The Firebirds ended their season as the Regional Runner-ups (Final 8). This was the third West/Mason game of the current season and the Firebirds actually got off to their best start of the three. In the two previous meetings the Comets had jumped out to leads on 10 and 9 points in the first quarter. In this game there were two first quarter lead changes and at the end of the first stanza the Firebirds trailed by only two points. Made treys, 8 of 14, and 4 of 12, enabled the Firebirds to come back for wins in the first two meetings. In this game that weapon failed them as they could only knock down 1 of 13 from beyond the arc. Denied that advantage, West had to go inside and battle the big Comet starting front line (6' 1", 6'1", 6" 3") with other 6 footers coming off of the Mason bench in relief. Abby Prohaska led the team in both scoring with 15 points, and rebounding with 6 boards, but was hampered by fouls, and played under 18 minutes before fouling out . Nia Staples led the team in both assists and steals with 7 and 3 respectively and was West's second leading scorer with 6 points. |
