L 41-48 0-2 0-1 The Firebirds led 9-7 after the first quarter and trailed by a single bucket (20-22) at the half.  Trailing,  West was forced to foul to stop the clock late in the second half but Fairfield was able to make their free throws allowing them to widen their lead.  The Indians finally won by 7 which can be credited to their 8 point advantage at the charity stripe.  Fairfield made 17 of 24 free throws as compared to West's 9 of 11.  Jacob Biehle and Tyreek Price both scored in double figures getting 12 and 11 points respectively.  Mitch Webber, battling a tall Fairfield front line (6' 5', 6'5", 6'8"), was the games leading rebounder with 7. The Firebirds set a new school record for the least points allowed in a game holding the Cardinals to a meager 14.  This surpassed the previous record low of 22 set in a game against Glen Este near the end of the 2005-06 season.  In addition to a tenacious defense West capitalized on the so-called hustle points by outscoring Colerain 18-0 on second chance points, and 31-4 on points off of turnovers.  West also had a telling advantage in points off the bench outscoring Colerain 24-5 in that department.  Eleven Firebird players saw action with nine scoring points and the other two contributing to the scoring with assists.  Starter Jacob Biehle led all scorers with 17 points but the second leading scorer was Freshman Keegan Fish who came off the bench to tally 9.  Biehle was also the games leading rebounder with 7 boards, 5 off the offensive glass, and steals with 4.  Thirteen of the Firebirds 22 field goals were assisted with 9 different players being credited with 1 or 2 assists each.

L 34-56 1-3 1-2 West got off to a promising start and led 8-7 with 3 minutes remaining in the first quarter.  Following 3 lead changes they trailed by a single bucket (13-15) when the quarter ended.  The Firebird made the first basket of the second quarter tying the game, 15-15, at the 7:06 mark.  At that point the wheels fell off the offense.  For the remaining 23 minutes of the game West made 1 of 19 from the field with the ball going everywhere but into  the hoop.  They made 18 of 24 free throws but that was insufficient to keep them in the game.  Mitch Webber cashed in on 10 of 12 from the charity stripe finishing the game with a team leading 14 points.  Mitch was also the team leader in shot blocks and steals with 3 and 2 respectively.  Jacob Biehle snagged 5 boards  to lead the Firebirds in rebounding. W 54-53 O.T. 2-3 2-2 West entered historic Wade Miller gymnasium and amid the banners surrounding Jerry Lucas court they upset the Middies in a hotly contested game. West opened the scoring with a field goal that was matched by Middletown 12 seconds later and so it went for much of the evening in a game that saw 6 ties and 8 lead changes.  The Firebirds led 9-6 three minutes into the game and then suffered through a 10.5 minute scoring drought reminiscent of what had happened in the East game earlier in the week and allowing Middletown to regain the lead 9-15 midway through the second quarter.  When the first half ended Middletown was leading by seven, 14-21.  The home team got the first score of the second half and took the games maximum lead of nine (14-23).  After three quarters the Firebirds had worked their way back to within four, trailing 27-31.  With 2:35 remaining in regulation a Jacob Biehle trey gave West the lead, 37-36.  Two more lead changes occurred in the next 30 seconds following two Middie free throws and a Keon Tillman field goal setting the score at 39-38.  Middletown tied the score at 39-39 Biehle again coming through in the clutch to give West 41-39 lead with 8 seconds left in regulation.  Middletown managed to get a shot in the air that went through the hoop after the buzzer sounded to tie the game 41-41.  The Middies opened the overtime scoring with a field goal but were answered by a Mitch Webber field goal 20 seconds later, score tied 43-43. Middletown then continued to open and hold small leads of from 4 to 2 points  until less than a minute remained in the overtime.  With 27 seconds remaining and holding a point lead the Middies missed two free throws giving the Firebirds yet another chance.  With 8 seconds to go Biehle made a free throw tying the score for the 8th and final time.  Biehle missed his second free throw and in the scramble for the rebound Middie forward Jimmy Ratliff was fouled with 7.2 seconds showing.  Ratliff also made 1 of  2 to get the home team back in the lead by one.  The Firebirds battled for the rebound and launched an outlet pass to Naa’ ll Mahdi who went streaking the length of the court and through heavy traffic to make the wining basket as the OT buzzer.  Mahdi’s contested shot produced the 6th and final lead change of the game leaving the score at 54-53, in West’s favor.  Mitch Webber and Jacob Biehle both recorded double-doubles.  Webber tallied 15 points to go with 11 rebounds.  Biehle matched Webber’s 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.  Naa’ll Mahdi’s game winning basket brought his point total for the evening to 11.  Keon Tillman had the top steal total in the game with four.  He also had primary responsibility for guarding the leagues top scorer, Kobie Johnson, who entered the game averaging over 25 ppg. Tillman with some help from his friends limited Johnson to 15 points and severely disrupted the Middie offense. Stats

L 54-69 2-4 2-2

West fell to a hot shooting Beavercreek squad in one of the games of the GMC-GWOC Holiday Hoops Conference Challenge series.  The Battling Beavers made 27 of 35 (72.1%) from the field, with 7 of 10 (70.0%) coming from treys.  The Firebirds more than held their own at the start of the contest and came out of the first quarter leading by one (18-17).  After 9 early lead changes and 4 ties the hot shooting Beavers started pulling away.  The Firebirds were down by single digits (9 points) at both the intermission 28-37) and the start of the final quarter (41-50)  but could not mount a run that would allow them to cut any further into the Beavercreek lead.  Jacob Biehle had a career night with game high totals of 27 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 steals.  Chase Kaiser was credited with a team leading 3 assists.  The Firebirds capitalized on 11 of 12 from the free throw line led by Mitch Webbers (4 for 4) and Biehle (6 for 7).

The Firebirds gained an early lead over the Aves and never trailed.  West was up 7 (34-27) at the intermission and held a maximum lead of 12 (55-43) just before Sycamore hit a trey at the final buzzer.  Jacob Biehle scored a game high 21 points, and did so very efficiently by making 8 of 11 from the field and 4 of 5 from the foul line.  Mitch Webber tallied 13 points by making 5 of 10 from the field and 3 for 3 at the charity stripe. The Firebirds as a team made an outstanding 17 of 20 (85.0%) from the free throw line.  Chase Kaiser added 9 points to the West total with 5 coming via 5 of 5 free throw accuracy.  Kaiser and Webber each had team bests of 4 rebounds.  Likewise Keegan Fish and Biehle shared team leadership with 3 steals each.

W 58-44 4-4 4-2 The Firebirds used a hounding defense and Jacob Biehle to forge a 21 point (31-10) halftime lead.  The West defense harassed Oak Hills into 11 first half turnovers, denied them any second chance points, and held them to one made field goal in 10 attempts over the first 16 minutes.  While the the Highlanders were being frustrated at one end of the gym  Jacob Biehle was having a  field day at their expense at the other end by chalking up 17 points.  Biehle made 7 of 7 from the field including 2 treys, and 1 of 2 from the free throw line. The Highlanders mounted a bit of a comeback in the third stanza.  They seemingly regained their composure and were able to whittle their deficit down to 10 points (39-29) a few seconds into the fourth quarter.  At that point they appeared spent by their comeback effort and five minutes after they had the lead down to 10 points West was back up by 22 (55-33) following, what else,  but another Biehle field goal.  Biehle spent less than 26 minutes on the court but that was enough time for him to run in 30 points.  In addition he was the games leading rebounder with 8 and tied for team leadership with 2 assists and 2 steals. L 58-60 4-6 4-3 For the Firebirds a promising start was followed by a disappointing defeat.  With just under 15 minutes remaining in the game West led by 16 (36-20).  Over the next four minutes St. Xavier got back into the fray with an unanswered 14 point run.  At that point the Firebirds stemmed the time and moved their lead back up to six (56-50) with  two minutes remaining.  West still led by three and had the ball in their hands with under a minute remaining.  St. X got the ball back following a missed West free throw, the Firebirds only free throw miss of the night (3/4), and only their second miss in 16 attempts for the tournament to date.  The Bombers forced the first tie of the evening (58-58), with a made trey that left the Firebirds with the ball and 28 seconds to do something with it.  The St. Xavier defense was able to pressure the Firebirds into a costly turnover which resulted in the only lead change of the game as X made the winning bucket (58-60) at the final buzzer.  Mitch Webber was the games high scorer putting in a personal best 22 points, 20 before the intermission.  Jack Nguyen contributed 10 points, also a personal best.  Nguyen made 5 of 6 field goal attempts including 3 of 3 in the pressure packed final quarter.  Keon Tillman had a game high 6 assits and a steal while only being charged with one turnover. L 45-60 4-7 4-3 The best thing to be said about this years Hardwood Classic is that it's over.   Elder took the lead for good (4-5) three minutes into the game and never relinquished it.  The Firebirds trailed by single digits (20-27) at the half but could not keep Elder in check after the intermission.  Jacob Biehle led the team in scoring with a very efficient 19 points. Biehle was 6 of 13 from the field  hitting on an impressive 5 of 10 from beyond the arc, and made both of his free throw attempts.  Jack Nguyen came off the bench to  tally the highest rebound total of the night (8) for either team, even though he was giving up several inches in height as he battled the taller Elder forecourt players.  West's downfall was their inability to take care of the ball.  The Firebirds turned the ball over 16 times to Elders 6 leading to an 18 point disadvantage in the points of off turnovers stat which more than accounted for the final deficit of 15.   Stats

L 47-50 4-8 4-3 Another close game but yet another defeat.  The Firebirds led by four (15-11) after the first quarter but the home team came surging back to lead at the halfway point, 20-24.  The Warriors never trailed in the second half holding leads that oscillated between 1 and 10.  West got within 2 (40-42) with 3:50 to play but then fell back to 6 down a minute later.  The Firebirds battled back again to get within 1 (45-46) with 1:16 remaining then slid back to trail by two (45-47) following a made Warrior free throw at the 51 second mark.  The Firebirds misfired on two short shots in heavy traffic which allowed Winton Woods to regain possession with a rebound with 21 seconds showing.  A quick West foul again stopped the clock but allowed the Warriors to raise their lead to 3 (48-45) with the time remaining down to approximately 10 seconds.  Mitch Webber was attempting to get a three point field goal in the air to force a tie but the officials rulled that he was fouled an instant before he got the ball up into shooting position.  Webber then dropped in both free throws to again bring West to within 1 (47-48), but now with just under 5 seconds to play. The Warriors were able to get the ball in play in spite of heavy Firebird defensive pressure, were immediately fouled, and made two more free throws effectively clinching the win 47-50.  With a second to play Winton Woods used a foul to ensure that the Firebirds could not launch a trey for the tie.  Mitch Webber was the leading scorer in the game with 17 points which included a perfect 11 for 11 from the free throw line.  Devonte Ross made his Firebird debut, scoring 8 points, and sharing team rebounding leadership with 6 boards even though his time was limited by foul problems.  Jacob Biehle also added 8 points to the West total.  Chase Kaiser and Jack Nguyen matched Ross's for rebounding leadership by grabbing 6 caroms each.  In addition Kaiser was the team assist leader with 3 and Nguyen topped the team in steals with 3.  Stats

For the fourth time in the last eight days the Firebirds  came up short by a single field goal.  After four lead changes and four ties regulation time expired with the score knotted at 49-49.  After a five minute overtime the issue was settled in the home teams favor and again by a single field goal.  Sophomore Frankie Schmitt was given his first starting assignment and responded by leading the team in scoring.  Schmitt tallied 15 points by making 5 of 6 from the field, including 3 for 3 from beyond the arc, and cashing in on 2 of 3 free throws.   He was also the team co-leader with 3 steals.  Other Firebirds scoring in double figures were Jacob Biehle with 14 and Jack Nguyen with 12.  Nguyen alsod dished out a team high 5 assists and matched Schmitt with 3 steals.   Mitch Webber led the team in rebounding with 10 boards.

In five games out of the last six the difference in the final score has been one basket or less.  The good news is that this time the Firebirds ended up on the positive side of the ledger eking out a league road game win that was needed to keep them in the upper half of the GMC standings.  Jacob Biehle led all scorers with 17 points and added a team best 3 steals.  Frank Schmitt had a team leading 4 assists.  Perhaps the most statistically unusual factor in the game was that even though the Cardinals committed more fouls than the Firebirds (18 versus 17)  they were still able to get to the free throw line more often and were able to put up 22 free throws to West's 9.  The resulting 11 point disadvantage at the charity stripe was almost,  but not quite, more than the Firebirds could overcome.

W 59-48 6-9 6-4 Tonight's Firebird performance was the embodiment of the old saying, "If every body does a little nobody will have to do a lot."
Eleven players played with all eleven playing significant minutes at critical junctures in both the first and second halves.  All eleven scored, eight of the eleven pulled down rebounds, six were credited with assists, five picked up steals, and two blocked shots.  At the start of the contest it looked as though West's recent run of games that were close all the way to the final buzzer would continue. Their were 3 ties and 7 lead changes before the intermission.  The Firebirds finally broke this close game trend by winning all four quarters, the first by 1, the second by 1, the third by 6, and the last by 3.  A trio of players shared scoring leadership with 12 points each; starters Jacob Biehle and Mitch Webber, joined by Devonte Ross coming off the bench.  Biehle and Ross also shared rebounding honors with 6 apiece followed closely by Webber with 5.  Naa'il Mahdi was the teams assist leader with 3, and filled out his stat line with 5 points, a steal, and a shot block.  This win moves the  Firebirds up to fourth place in the current GMC standings.

L 52-54 6-10 6-5 So much for home court advantage. West beat the Middies by 1 in overtime (54-53) at Middletown in December but Middletown evened the series with a 52-54 win at the Firebirds Main Street Arena tonight.  Middletown took the first lead, stretching that lead to 14 (10-24) early in the second quarter.  The Firebirds whittled the Middie lead down to 5 (22-27) at the half.  The long methodical comeback continued leaving West within a field goal (36-39) entering the final stanza.  The first tie of the game (43-43) came with 5:33 left on the clock.    Jacob Biehle sank two free throws to force the first lead change of the game at the 4:15 mark, 45-43 West advantage.  Middletown regained the lead 50-51 with 1:19 remaining.  Following two scores in the final minute Middletown had the lead 52-54 but West had the ball and enough time to get a good look at a trey for the win but the shot was off the mark as time ran out.  This was the seventh game this season to be decided by one field goal or less.   Jacob Biehle had team highs of 16 points and 7 rebounds.  Mitch Webber was close behind with 13 points and 7 boards of his own.  The Firebirds just missed perfection from the free throw stripe as they made 15 of 16. The Firebirds got off to a promising start by scoring the first seven points of the game.  Undaunted the Comets surged back to win the first quarter 9-10.  West stayed with Mason until late in the second quarter when the score was tied 16-16.  With under a minute to go in the first half Mason's lead had only grown to four (18-22) but a Firebird turnover enabled the Comets to take a six point (18-24) lead to the dressing room.  As it turned out Mason's last basket of the first half was the start of a 13 to 2 scoring run putting the Comets in firm control (20-37).  A harrowing Mason defense coupled with West's carelessness with the ball led to a turnover disparity of  17 (4-21) which in turn gave the Comets a 19 point advantage (0-19) in points off of turnovers. Mitch Webber scored 11 points and was the only Firebird in double figures.  He also pulled down a team high 7 rebounds. Clustered behind Webber, Jake Biehle and Keegan Fish scored 9 points each.

L 37-48 6-13 6-8

Lakota East came into this game heavily favored and ultimately left with the win but not before a scrappy West team gave them a battle.  Their were 8 ties and 9 lead changes before the issue was settled.  The Firebirds held a 33-31 lead going into the final quarter.  East tied the game  at 33-33 about 30 seconds into the final stanza, and were then able to force the final lead change by making two free throws with 6:36 remaining.  These two freebies started a 7-0 East run that was fueled by their making 7 of 8 free throws.  East pulled away in the final 7 minutes of the fourth quarter by cashing in on 13 of 14 from the charity stripe and finished the evening making 19 of 23 (82.6%) of their free throw attempts.  Jacob Biehle netted 10 points and was the only Firebird in double figures. Biehle also tied Mitch Webber for team rebounding leadership, each with five boards .  West held the tall and talented Thunderhawks fifteen points below their season per game scoring average but could not muster up enough offensive fire power of their own to spring the upset.

2/14 at Lasalle

L 42-58 6-14 6-8 The good news is that Lakota West won the first quarter (11-9) and won the second half (30-29).  The bad news is that games are four quarters in length and LaSalle won the second quarter by an 18 point margin (2-20) and hence the game by 16 (42-58).  For eight second quarter minutes West shots wouldn't drop, West cutters went left while passes went right, and some critical foul calls went against the Firebirds shifting the momentum of the game to the Lancers favor.  Mitch Webber was the team leader in three statistical catagories;  points scored (13), rebounds (7), and shot blocks (2).  Jacob Biehle added 12 points to the Firebird total.

Another game goes down to the wire but this one belonged to the Firebirds.  West trailed most of the evening but kept  it close being down 4 after a quarter and by just 3 at the half.  A brief Big Blue surge in the third quarter resulted in them taking their largest lead of 10 points.  At that point the Firebirds started reeeling them in and finally gained the lead 48-46 with 41 seconds yet to play. Hamilton came back to tie the game 48-48 but that left the Firebirds with the ball and 22.7 seconds to do something good with it.  Jacob Biehle was once again the go to guy driving to the basket and drawing a foul with 3.5 seconds showing on the clock.  Biehle made the first which proved to be the game winner and missed the second but time ran out on the Big Blue before they could secure the rebound.  Biehle's last point was his team leading and game high 16th of the evening.  Chase Kaiser displayed perfect marksmanship making 5 of 5 from the field including 2 treys, and hit on 2 for 2 from the foul line to produce a career best 14 points, and the best part was that he did it in a game where every point was needed.  Kaiser was also the games leading rebounder with 7 boards.

The outcome was never in doubt as the Firebirds raced out to a 20 point (34-14) lead in the first half.  West once again used all 13 players playing in innumerable combinations as they cruised to their fifth consecutive win.  Nia Staples made 3 of 3 from beyond the arc  and was the games leading scorer with 16 points.  Lauren Cannatelli added 13 points, with 9 coming from long range.  As a team the Firebirds made 8 o13 (61.5%) from beyond the arc.  Danielle Wells and Madysin Oxley  contributed to this shooting clinic with one trey each.  Staples was fouled on one of her 3pt. FG's and made the foul shot to complete a four point play to cap a Firebird 12-0 first half scoring run.  West outrebounded the Thunderhawks 45-21 led by Arianne Whitaker's 14.  Eleven of Whitaker's carooms came off the offensive glass enabling the Firebirds to gain a 12 point advantage in second chance points.  West had more offensive rebounds (25) than East's entire rebounding total (21).  Danielle Wells was the game assist leader with 6.

At that point they switched to a super deliberate offense and as much as said to the Comets, "Catch us if you can!!" and they couldn't. For the remainder of the game West dictated the pace and were never seriously challenged.  The game was moved from the gym where the Mason girls usually play to the big Mason arena to accommodate the large crowd.   Radio broadcasters at court side as well as reporters in attendance from both the Cincinnati Enquirer and Cox News Chain added to the tournament atmosphere.  Lexi Wasan was the Firebirds leading scorer with 13 points hitting on 6/9 from the field.  Both Danielle Wells and Nia Staples finished in double digits scoring 10 points each.  Mason concentrated on stoping West's 1000 point career scorer, Lauren Cannatelli who responded by dishing out a game high 6 assists, picked off a game high 4 steals, and still scored 5 points while only needing only 4 shots to do it.  Freshman Abigail Prohaska got the starting call in place of Adrienne Whitaker who is coming back from an injury.  Prohaska filled her stat line with 8 points, 4 rebounds, an assist, a blocked shot, and a steal.  Whitaker came off the bench to log 14 minutes and announced her return to the lineup by hauling down a game high 9 boards, and batting away 3 Comet shots for a second game leading stat.

Immediately following the game players, parents, former parents, current fans and coaching staff helped Coach Fishman celebrate his 300th win as a head coach.  In attendance were former Lakota West Principal Craig Ullery and former district athletic director Stu Eversole who, in 1997, collaborated to select coach Fishman to lead the new West girls basketball program.  Others in attendance included Andrea (Carlberg) Shwartz who was a four year starter for West (1998-2002), and Stephanie Comisar (class of 2003) a former Firebird star and member of the Lakota Athletic Hall of Fame, both of whom helped contribute to many of the coaches early wins.

The object of this game was not to see who would win as that was a foregone conclusion.  The object of this game was to celebrate Senior Day and to honor the five seniors on this years roster.  All five seniors; Ashley Holder, Blake Fishman, Emily Haar, Arianne Whitaker, and Lauren Cannatelli were in the starting lineup and also reappeared together as a unit at other junctures of the game.  Late in the fourth quarter  Haar and Cannatelli's freshman sisters, were subbed into the game  as a surprise enabling them to play two minutes with their sisters during their high school careers.  All five seniors scored to the cheers of the festive crowd.  Cannatelli, who was introduced before the game as the all time Lakota school district record holder for made three point field goals, illustrated this particular talent by making 5 of 6 from beyond the three point arc.  Some were from well beyond the three point line, and none of the five were observed to touch anything but the bottom of the net.  She scored a game high 21 points and used just twenty minutes to do it.  Arianne Whitaker, who was introduced as a team and GMC leader in rebounding and shot blocking gave a demonstration of those talents by pulling down a game high 9 boards and swatting away two Aviator field goal attempts while playing less than half the game.   Abigail Prohaska, who came into the day leading the league in steals with an average of over 3 per game, strengthened her hold on that lead by recording 6 picks in this contest.

The Firebirds started by establishing a first quarter lead (13-8) as they had done in all 29 previous games this season.  More importantly they finished the game with a lead as they had done for the previous 20 games.  Their season ending streak of 21 consecutive wins establishes a new Lakota school district record displacing the previous record of 19 in a row set by the 2010-11 Lakota East boys basketball team.  Mid way through the third quarter in was beginning to look like a blow out win might be in the offing with the Firebirds ahead by 14 (32-18) and in control of the games pace. At that point the Eagles, who came into the game with a 27-2 record and ranked 6th in the state, reached into their reserve and fashioned an 11-0 run to put them selves back in the game (32-29) entering the final quarter.  As the Firebirds hung on to the lead the Eagles inched even closer getting to within two twice (33-31 & 37-35).  With 2:16 between West the championship they were clinging to a 40-37 lead when when a Lexi Wasan trey gave them the breathing room they needed to insure the victory.  Wasan, playing in her third varsity season had tried one trey as a frosh and missed, had tried two more as a sophomore missing both, and had put up an additional three more this year before getting to Columbus thereby bringing her career total to 0-6.  However at the final four, under the bright lights and on the big stage she was a perfect 3 for 3 from afar with all three coming at critical junctures late in the final two games.  For the night Wasan led the team with 15 points, led all rebounders in the game with 10 boards, and was a team co leader in both blocks and steals, with 1 and 2 respectively.  She did all this while battling a 6' 2", college division 1 signee down in the low post on the defensive end of the court. Lauren Cannatelli demonstrated why she was named as an Ohio Division 1 co-player of the year by scoring the last 14 of her 1426 points as a Firebird.  Danielle Wells added 10 points finishing with double figures for the second consecutive night. Nia Stables was on the court for over 30 minutes defending and handling the ball against  the speedy Eagles guards without committing either a foul or a turnover.  Freshman Abigail Prohoska, forced to start in place of Arianne Whitaker who was injured in the previous nights games, picked the Eagles pockets for two steals to bring her season record total to an even 100.  She becomes just the second Lakota school district basketball player to hit the steals century mark in a season. ( Previously done by Lakota high school and WNBA player Brooke Wyckoff as a junior and senior, and by previous Lakota high school and Xavier University player Jonelle Riley as a senior).  And finally fourteen players went to Columbus to claim the championship trophy and all 14 officially got into one or more of the games.
