8/29 Loveland W 49-46 1-0 0-0 West prevailed over the defending D-2 State Champion Loveland Tigers. Loveland  entered the season as the #1 ranked D-2 team in Cincinnati. West was down by seven points less than 30 seconds into the contest but quickly rebounded to take the lead for good before the 1st quarter ended. In this streak QB Blake Darland ran in a TD from 5 yards out and threw pass completions  for TD's of 48 yards and 5 yards to Mykel Chambers and Dante Jones respectively. In the second stanza Darland connected on TD throws of 53 yards and 52 yards to Zelwyn  Robinson to keep the Tigers at bay, 35-24, at the intermission. Robinson caught his school record breaking 3rd TD pass early in the 3rd quarter, again from Darland, enabling West to preserve their lead of 11 points entering the final stanza. Loveland briefly pulled to within 3 points (42-39) with 7:34 to play only to see their deficit increase to 10 points as Mykel Chambers ran the ensuing kick-off 97 yards and back into the Tiger end zone.  The Tigers managed to get to within 3 points (49-46) again with just under 3 minutes to go. The Firebird defense closed out the game with a goal line stand as time expired to preserve the win. Darland passed for 356 yards and 5 TD's both Lakota School District records. Zelwyn Robinson had 133 receiving yards followed closely by Dante Jones with 106.  Zelwyn reached pay dirt three times setting a Lakota West receiving record. Jack Nguyen, who scored earlier in the week for the Firebirds as a soccer forward, was a perfect 7 of 7 kicking extra points . C.J. Stalker had a team leading 9 tackles (4 solo). Stats
9/5 at Elder L 21-51 1-1 0-0 West opened the scoring just 2 minutes into the game when Braxton Neal scored on a 25 yard run.  Elder tied the game 3 min. later only to see the Firebirds regain the lead (14-7) following a Blake Darland/Zelwyn Robinson pass play that covered 80 yards on the first play from scrimmage following Elders first TD.  Undaunted the Panthers surged back to regain the lead (14-21) by adding two more TD's,  the second one coming seconds before the first quarter ended.   A Darland to Mykel Chambers scoring pass play covered 52 yards to bring the Firebirds back to within 7 (21-28) with 5:10 remaining in the first half.  From that point on Elder, hitting on all cylinders both offensively and defensively, put the game out of West's reach.  Darland accumulated 213 passing yards and Kole Gentry carried the ball 17 times gaining a team leading 113 yards.  Zelwyn Robinson just missed the century mark with 4 catches totaling 99 yards to lead the team in that department.  Jack Nguyen was 3 for 3 kicking the extra points.  Defensive lineman Troy Jones was the leading Firebird tackler with 9 stops (8 solo) Stats
9/12 Wayne L 29-34 1-2 0-0

West scored when Will Nguyen, filling in for his brother injured place kicker Jack Nguyen, made good on a 22 yard field goal four minutes into the game.  Although West controlled the ball for most of the first quarter the score still stood at 3-0 when the period ended.  The Firebirds engineered a long drive of 90 yards in 17 plays which was completed when Blake Darland ran a 6 yard keeper play to stretch the West lead to 10-0.  Wayne  rebounded  to take the lead 10-13, 10 seconds before the first half ended.  Early in the third quarter Darland completed a 26 yard pass play to Dante Horton to restore the Firebird lead, 17-13.  Back came the Warriors to force the third lead change of the game by forging ahead 17-20.  With 9 seconds to go in the third period Wayne scored again to stretch their lead to ten points (17-27).  The Firebirds ground out a 7 play, 71 yard drive early in the final stanza which ended with a Gentry one yard rush to get West within 4 points (23-27).  As the quarter wound down Wayne and West swapped TD drives to set the final score at 29-34.  West final TD came on a 45 yard pass play from Darland to Braxton Neal, with 5:02 left in the game. Both defenses stiffened and 29-34 was where the scoring ended.  Blake Darland passed the ball for 226 yards completing 17 of 30 with no interceptions.  Dante Jones was Darland's favorite target reeling in 6 catches totaling 98 yards.  Kole Gentry was the leading rusher in the game with 27 carries for 140 yards gained.  C.J. Stalker made a team leading 8 tackles, all solo, and was credited with a sac.  Michael Tshabola had 7 solo tackles. Luc Gendrue was credited with the only pass interception of the game.

Stats
9/19 at Middletown W 27-24 2-2 1-0

West pulled out an important win in their conference opener at Middletown.  The Firebirds trailed 0-10 early in the second quarter, forced a lead change midway through the second quarter after scoring on a Kole Gentry 3 yard rush, and a Mykel Chambers 85 yard punt return to put West on top 14-10.  Middletown regained the lead, 14-17, 48 seconds before the intermission.  Things were looking  bleak by the end of the third period when the Middies stretched their lead to ten, 14-24.  In the fourth quarter the Firebirds began to hit their stride fashioning a 9 play, 65 yard drive which culminated in another Gentry TD run to set the score at 20-24 with 6:58 remaining.  Middletown was forced to turn the ball over on downs leaving West with 63 yards to go and 4:25 to do it.  On the next to last play of the drive Gentry ran the ball 16 yards to the Middie 3 yard line and then walked it into the end zone on the next play putting West back into the lead, 27-24, with 1:31 remaining.  Middletown got back into Firebird territory and on 4th and 10 tried a desperation 52 yard field goal with 18 seconds showing on the clock, only to see it blocked. Kole Gentry was the leading rusher in the game with 165 yards leading to 3 TD's.  Blake Darland was the leading passer completing 17 of 28 for 175 yards. Zelwyn Robinson was the games leading receiver catching 8 for a total of 91 yards.  Devin Pearson had a game high 13 tackles (8 solo) and was in on two tackles for loss.  West defenders Troy Jones and Clayton Bell got the only sacks in the game.   Jones was credited with 7 tackles total, including a sack and another tackle for loss.

Stats
9/26 Colerain L 21-30 2-3 1-1 West ultimately fell to Colerain in a back and forth game that  featured a tie and three lead changes.  West scored on their opening drive moving the ball 78 yards with 16 plays in five minutes to take the early lead 7-0. That score came on a Kole Gentry 1 yard plunge and a Will Nguyen extra point conversion.  Colerain answered with a  71 yard 12 play drive to tie the game 7-7 near the end of the first quarter.  Colerain forced the first lead change with a second quarter  TD but missed the extra point.  Lead Change number two came when the Firebirds scored on a 37 yard pass play from Blake Darland to Zelwyn Robinson followed by another Nguyen extra point kick that put West back in the lead 14-13.  West was unable to pick up a critical first down on fourth and inches with 40 seconds remaining in the half to open the door for Colerain to regain the lead 14-16 with a 45 yard FG as time expired.  The Firebirds went into the final stanza down 14-23 but ground out an 11 play, 81 yard drive to pull to within two points (21-23) with 7:35 remaining. The Colerain defense held forcing a West fourth down fumble on their own 10 that the Cardinals recovered and took to the end zone to set the final score at 21-30.Darland scored the TD on a 3 yard keeper play. With 2 minutes remaining West had the ball and a first down on their own 21 yard line needing to at least get to within field goal range for a chance to win.   Darland completed 22 of 36 passes with no interceptions totaling 236 yards through the air.  Zelwyn Robinson had game high receiving totals of 7 catches and 85 yards.  Kole Gentry was the Firebirds leading ground gainer with 21 carries totaling 56 yards. C.J. Stalker led all tacklers with 11 (8 solo).  Stalker was also credited with the Firebirds only sack.  Stats
10/3 Hamilton W

49-21

3-3 2-1

Forty-three seconds into the game Blake Darland connected with Mykel Chambers on a pass play good for 55 yards and a touchdown. That set the tone and the Firebirds were never threatened by the Big Blue.  Over the course of the next three quarters Kole Gentry rushed for five TD's tying the Lakota West single game scoring record that had been set by Mike Lovell in 2001.  Following a Dan Otakasongo 4 yard rushing TD near the end of the third quarter which gave West a 49-14 lead all the starters were given the rest of the evening off.  Jack Nguyen was a perfect 7 of 7 kicking extra points.  Kole Gentry ran the ball for a game high  and personal best 215 yards.  Gentry also caught 3 passes for a team leading 69 yards receiving.  Blake Darland completed 10 of 16 passes for a game leading total of 183 yards.  C.J. Stalker brought down 15 Hamilton runners, 11 with unassisted tackles.  Firebird defenders returned the pigskin a whopping 148 yards following three pass interceptions; one by Marcos Aull for 76 yards, one by Clayton Bell for 50 yards, and another by Sean Mahone for 22 yards.  Bell, Aull, and Mahone also contributed 6, 4, and 2 tackles respectively.  Devin Pearson was a stalwart on the defensive line making 6 tackles and gathering in a fumble recovery.

Stats
10/10 at Sycamore W 27-13 4-3 3-1

There were two constants in tonight's game.  West never trailed and the rain never stopped.  The Firebirds scored in the first quarter when Kole Gentry ran the ball 15 yards for a TD.  West scored their second TD through the air via a 22 yard pass play from Blake Darland to Dante Jones.  The Firebirds dominated play in the first half earning twice as many first downs (10 vs. 5) and gaining over three times as many yards (181-56) as the Aviators. Still, Sycamore came out fired up after the intermission.  They scored a TD early in the third quarter, and soon thereafter drove the ball into West territory threatening to tie for the lead.  The Firebirds were able to stem the Sycamorer tide before the Aves could catch up however.  Three minutes into the fourth quarter a 38 yard Jack Nguyen field goal set the score at 17-7 but the Aviators countered with a TD of their own just 40 seconds later to pull within 4 points (17-13).  Gentry scored with a 35 yard run to give the red and white some breathing room (24-13) five minutes into the last stanza.  With 1:33 on the clock Jack Nguyen hit on his second field goal try of the evening, this time a 30 yarder,  boosting the West lead to 14 (27-13).  Kole Gentry  was an offensive dynamo with 36 carries for 213 yards, just two less than his previous single game high set last Friday.  Although slowed somewhat by the inclement weather Blake Darland continues to pile up yards through the air completing 10 of 20 passes for 90 yards.  Braxtron Neal was West's leading receiver with 3 catches totaling 43 yards.  Jack Nguyen was an impeccable 2 for 2 kicking field goals, and two for two kicking extra points.  Luc Gendreau led the team with 8 total tackles.  Even Ellis was credited with the most solo tackles, 4. Mykel Chambers was all over the field gathering in three pass receptions, running back two punts, running back a kick off for 46 yards, and last but far from least intercepting an Aves pass and running it bad 35 yards.  Evan Ellis was the only Firebird to be credited with a sack.

Stats
10/17 Mason  L 7-23 4-4 3-2 West received the opening kickoff and marched  down the field to put 7 points on the scoreboard in the first two minutes of the game.  Kole Gentry scored on a 2 yard run   In the next two minutes the Firebirds held the Comets to three plays from scrimmage and a punt.  This promising 4 minute beginning of unbridled success was followed by 44 minutes of unbridled frustration.  The Firebirds were unable to score another point,  while the Comets regrouped and added 23.  Mason surged by West with two TD's late in the first half, the final one 18 seconds before the half ended.  That gave them a 7-14 lead going into the intermission.  The Comets improved their lead to 7-21 late in the third quarter.  With a minute to go the Firebirds took a team safety following a bad snap to set the final score at 7-23.   Blake Darland threw for 16 completions in 24 attempts gaining a game high 193 yards through the air.  Darland raised his passing yardage total for the season to 1672 topping the previous Lakota West record of 1508 set by Dustin Huff in 2005.  Darlands favorite targets were Braxton Neal with 4 catches for 54 yards and Mykel Chambers with 4 for 46 yards. C.J. Stalker was the games leading tackler with 18 (11 solo). Stats
10/24 at Fairfield L 5-14 4-5 3-3

The Lakota West touchdown drought that started in the first quarter last week continues.  Early in the game the Firebirds got to the Indian one yard line but turned the ball over on downs. Still with 6:10 remaining in the first quarter West did post a score when Luc Gendreu blocked a Fairfield punt in the endzone for a safety giving West the lead, 2-0 which they made last till well into the third quarter.  Early in the third period Fairfield scored on a 79 yard pass play to take the lead , 2-7.  With 4:29 left in the third stanza Jack Nguyen kicked a 30 yard field goal allowing the Firebirds to draw within two, 5-7.  The back breaker came when the Indians broke another long pass play, this time for 59 yards, and another TD. That gave them a 5-14 lead with only 3:06 remaining in the game.  The Firebird's frustrations continued as they failed in their attempts to put any more points on the board. Blake Darland passed for 183 yards bringing his season total to a Lakota district record 1855.  This surpasses the previous high mark of 1758 set by Keith Johnson of Lakota during the 1986 season.  Mykel Chambers had team high's of 5 pass catches and 78 yards.  Zelwyn Robinson picked up 60 yards with three kick returns and 49 more with one long punt return totaling 109 special team yards for the night.  Kole Gentry led the team in rushing with 12 carries totaling 68 yards.   C.J. Stalker had a team high 8 tackles (5 solo), one resulting in a sack.  Sean Mahone and Devin Pearson were each credited with two tackles for loss.

Stats
10/31 Lakota East  W 24-7 5-5 4-3 The Firebirds weathered a first quarter touchdown by East and then proceeded to take out a seasons worth of frustration on the Hawks by running off 24 unanswered points.   West came back to take the lead in the second quarter behind the combination of  a 27 yard field goal from Jack Nguyen and a 4 yard TD run by Kole Gentry. Gentry's go ahead score came just 18 seconds before the first half ended and capped a 7 play 40 yard drive.  Dan Otakasongo ripped off a 39 yard scoring run late in the third quarter to give the Firebirds some breathing room with a 17-7 lead.  The clincher came on a 5 play, 58 yard scoring drive in the final period.  Four of the five plays were Gentry rushes totaling 40 yards including the final 2 on a TD plunge to put the Firebirds ahead by a commanding 24-7 lead.  The final 10:45 of the game was played between the 20 yard lines.  Gentry was the games leading rusher with 101 yards marking the seventh game this season in which he reached the century mark.  Blake Darland was the games leading passer with a workman like 70 yards, connecting on 8 of 15 with no interceptions.  Jack Nguyen chipped in with 3 extra point kicks to go with his field goal to register another perfect kicking performance.  C.J. Stalker recorded a game high 13 tackles raising his career tackle total to an even 200.  He becomes just the third Firebird to reach the 200 tackle milestone.  Devon Pearson turned in a superb all around performance which included a sack, a fumble recovery, 6 tackles, and generally leading the charge from the defensive line.  Stats

West handed the Centerville Elks their first loss of the year setting up a rematch with the Lakota East Thunderhawks.  Centerville drew first blood with a 28 yard field goal 4 minutes into the game.  The Firebirds responded on the very next possession taking the ball 62 yards in 7 plays to give themselves the lead (7-3) following an 8 yard Cole Gentry run.  Centerville regained the lead with a TD 5 seconds into the second quarter but missed the extra point.  Centerville advantage 9-7.  Twenty-seven seconds before the intermission Blake Darland threw a bomb to Mykel Chambers that went for 43 yards and a TD to give the Firebirds a 14-9 lead at the half.  West received  the kickoff opening the second half and promptly marched the ball 67 yards downfield increasing their lead to 21-9.  Zelwyn Robinson had the honor of carrying the pigskin the final yard for the score.  Centerville threatened to score in a first and goal situation at the West 9 yard line near the end of the third quarter but were thwarted by the Firebird defense forcing the frustrated Elks to turn the ball over on downs at the one yard line.  The Firebirds mounted another goal line stand near the en of the final stanza.  The Elks had to use five plays (one repeat on a penalty) and 1:19 to score after having the ball 1st and goal on the West 1 yard line.  With that touchdown Centerville narrowed the West lead to 21-15 but once again they missed the extra point.  That was as close as the Elks could get as the two teams exchanged possessions as time ran out.  Blake Darland connected on 15 of 25 throws gaining 194 yards.  Zelwyn Robinson made 7 catches for a team high 86 yards receiving.  Kole Gentry had team highs of 17 carries and 65 yards.  Chambers, in addition to the 43 yard pass play, had a 54 yard kickoff return and a 21 yard punt return to amass 116 all purpose yards.  Jack Nguyen was 2 for 2 kicking extra points.  C.J. Stalker was the leading tackler in the game with 12 tackles (10 solo).

West made history by being the first Lakota school to advance to the third round (round of 8) in the OHSAA playoffs.  The Firebirds forged a methodical 86 yard, 12 play drive that ended with a Kole Gentry TD giving them a 7-0 lead 5:26 into the game only to see it undone by a 72 yard scoring run by East to tie the game on the next play from scrimmage. Undeterred the Firebirds regained their seven point advantage following a Blake Darland to Mykel Chambers 69 yard pass play before the first quarter ended.  In the second stanza the West offense went into high gear producing three more touchdowns.   The first was on a Zelwyn Robinson 40 yard scamper, the second on another Darland to Chambers pass play, this time for 11 yards, and the third on a Darland to Braxton Neal 60 yard connection to end the first half.  Darland and Neal hooked up again, this time for 15 yards  to open the second half scoring.  At that point the Thunderhawks found themselves in a 42-7 hole and the humiliation of having the running clock mercy rule evoked.  East managed to right their ship somewhat by scoring the next three TD's, and twice regaining ball possession by employing on side kicks.  This brought the Hawks to within 15 (42-27) with 7:40 remaining in the game.  At that point the Firebirds dashed East's hopes by adding to their total with a 7 yard rushing touch down by Robinson and a 32 yard field goal by Jack Nguyen.  Nguyen turned in his typical perfect evening kicking, scoring on 7 of 7 extra point attempts and his lone field goal attempt.  The two teams combined total of 79 points made this the highest scoring game in the 18 game East/West series.  West now leads the series 12-6. Blake Darland continues to raise the Lakota district single season passing yards record adding another 273 this game, 217 of which came in the decisive first half.  In addition Darland raised his passes for touchdown  season total to 17 which is a new record for both Lakota West and the Lakota School District.  The previous record holders were Dustin Huff, Lakota West, with 14 in 2005, and Rob Rohrbach, Lakota, with 15 in 1989.  Braxton Neal collected 5 pass catches for a game leading 102 yards.  Chambers was close behind with 5 for 96 yards.  Zelwyn Robinson had the most successful catches, six.  Robinson was also the leading rusher in the game with 108 yards, closely followed by Kole Gentry with 105.  C.J. Stalker and Devin Pearson were each credited with 10 tackes, 7 solo for Stalker and 6 for Pearson.  Both Donte Horton and Evan Ellis registered QB sacks.  Payton Porterfield, Marcus Aull, and Sean Mahone each had pass interceptions.  This trio caught nearly as many Thunderhawk passes, three vs. four, as did the Lakota  East receiving corp.

Round of 8

L 3-38 7-6

West got off to a fast start by receiving the opening kick and moving the ball back into Wayne territory with a 9 play 56 yard drive capped by a Jack Nguyen 31 yard field goal. That gave the Firebirds an early but short lived lead.  Wayne was quick to respond answering with a 5 play, 56 yard drive of their own to force a lead change just 4 minutes into the first quarter (3-7).  The Warriors struck again late in the first quarter boosting their advantage to 3-14 before the period ended.  West made several excursions into Wayne territory but all further scoring efforts by the Firebirds were thwarted.  West had 4 red-zone scoring chances but these chances  only yielded the opening 3 points. In the mean time  the Wayne offense was methodical producing single touchdowns in each of the final three quarters, They also scored with a field goal of their own in the second stanza.  Jack Nguyen kept his perfect kicking record intact by making his 6th field goal in 6 tries this season.  In earlier games he was on target with 34 of 34 extra point kicks.  Blake Darland passed for a game high total of 203 yards.  Zelwyn Robinson had team leading totals of 6 catches and 69 yards receiving.  Kole Gentry tallied 100 yards of total offense, 54 rushing and 46 receiving.  Devin Pearson was the leading tackler with 9 (6 solo) followed closely by C.J. Stalker with 8 (6 solo) and Jalan Long 6 total all solo.  Pearson was credited with a team best two tackles for loss.  Long was credited with a fumble forced and a fumble recovery combination that stopped a probable Wayne score in the second half.
