West scored first (2 min. into game) and last in regulation (6 seconds remaining) to force an overtime period.  This game featured 1 lead change and 3 ties prior to the OT.  West had the first OT score, a 27 yard Justin Martin FG but Winton Woods responded with a 5 play drive to score the winning TD.  Malik Grove threw the ball for 177 yards and a school record tying three TD’s in a game.  Grove completed a 15 yard pass to Tyler Jones for his third scoring throw.  Jones, in addition to his game tying reception was a standout on defense with 8 tackles and was picked as the Skyline player of the game for Lakota West.  Justin Martin was three for three kicking extra points, kicked a 27 yard FG for the first score of OT, and scored the 2nd West touchdown with a 6 yard pass reception.  Kole Gentry teamed with Grove on a scoring pass play that covered 27 yards and was also the teams leading rusher with 10 carries covering 44 yards.  Jarin Higginbotham pulled down 3 passes for a game high 59 yards receiving.  Linebacker C.J. Stalker was the Firebirds leading tackler with 11 (10 unassisted).

West never trailed but could not get far away from the pesky Trojans.  The game was a defensive stalemate for the first 3 quarters with the Firebirds leading by  just 7-3 going into the fourth period.  At that point the scoring log jam broke and the two teams put up 29 of their combined 39 points in the final stanza. Mikel Horton rushed the ball 10 times gaining a game high 117 yards. His total included a run of 15 yards for West’s first TD and a 52 yard gallop for the home teams final score.  QB Malik Grove connected with receiver Keon Tillman for the Firebirds second TD of the game, a 49 yard effort, which gave West their largest lead (14-3)  just seconds into the fourth quarter. Mike Klunk was West’s leading tackler with 9 (7 solo). Tyler Jones was credited with the games only pass interception and added 7 tackles.  Trent Rogers had a game best 3 tackles for loss.  Grove, in addition to directing the offense came back on the field as a defender in the closing minute of the game and made a tackle to help preserve the win.  The Firebirds handed a very good Warrior team their first defeat of the year and evened the all time series between the two schools at 1-1.

West won the toss, elected to receive, and opened the scoring with a methodical 10 play, 71 yard, 3:27 min drive capped by a 1 yard TD run by Malik Grove.  In the blink of an eye Wayne answered with a 95 yard kick off return to pull within one (7-6).  West scored 3 more points in the first stanza as Justin Martin kicked a 29 yard field goal but Wayne took their first lead 10-13 later in the first period.  Wayne added to that lead with a TD in the second quarter to move ahead 10-20. West then mounted another drive, this time covering 80 yards in 8 plays, and once again capped by a Grove rushing TD, this one from 6 yards out setting the half-time score at 17-20. In the third quarter West regained the lead as Grove connected with Mikel Horton on a 31 yard pass play to set the score at 24-20.  Wayne moved ahead yet again 24-27 with 9 minutes remaining.  West forced the fourth lead change of the game when Horton scored his second receiving TD of the night covering 27 yards on a pass from Grove.  With the score at 31-27 and only 1:28 on the clock Wayne had the Firebirds backed up to their 7 yard line but the Warriors needed to complete a 4th down play for 4 yards to keep the ball.  They elected to pass and the pass was broken up as Trent Rodgers made a diving tip of the ball essentially sealing the win for the Firebirds.  QB Malik Grove passed for 230 yards and two TD’s.  He also rushed for 94 yards and two more TD’s.  Mikel Horton was the leading pass receiver with three catches for 66 yards and two TD’s including what proved to be the game winner.  Justin Martin was once again a perfect 4/4 kicking extra points, and 1/1 on field goal attempts. Butch Chaney was the teams leading tackler with 8 (6 solo).  Jawan Holmes had a game high 3 pass break-ups to go with 5 tackles.  Trent Rodgers was credited with 5 tackles in addition to his game winning pass deflection at games end.

West took a 7-0 lead late in the 1st quarter as the result of an 84 yard drive with a strange ending. Mikel Horton ran the ball to the goal line and extended his arm into the end zone for an apparent touchdown.  At that point a Hamilton defender knocked the ball out of Horton’s hand and the linesman failed to signal the score.  Jarrad Higgenbotham alertly scrambled on top of the loose ball and received credit for the score by fumble recovery.  Kole Gentry extended the Firebird lead to 14-0 with an 8 yard run early in the second quarter but Hamilton worked the lead back down to 14-7 in the middle of the second period.  From that point forward West took control of the game, scoring four unanswered touch downs; a second Kole Gentry TD on a 16 yard pass from Malik Grove, a Mikel Horton 2 yard rush, a Malik Grove 13 yard run, and finally midway through the fourth quarter a 14 yard pass play TD from Blake Darland to Dante Jones.  Freshman place kicker Will Nguyen was brought up to the varsity to replace Justin Martin who was out with an injury.  Nguyen made his varsity debut by successfully scoring on 6 of 6 extra points kicks.  Two Firebirds topped the century mark running, Mikel Horton picking up 131 yards with Kole Gentry close behind at 115 yards.  Grove had a typically outstanding game passing. He completed 5 of 10 passes with no interceptions for 112 yards and a TD.  Jawan Holmes had an outstanding night for the defense by intercepting a pass and recording a tackle for loss among his team high 4 solo stops.  Tony Gabbard led the team in total tackles with 7.  Donte Horton and Paxton Robinson each recorded a sack.

Two evenly matched teams played till the final horn sounded and beyond.  Both held leads and neither ever led by more than 7 points.  All the scoring came as the results of long grind it out drives.  Nobody got on the board until early in the second quarter when Sycamore completed an 8 play 54 yard drive.  West answered the Aves with a 6 play 74 yard drive and then a 9 play 76 yard drive and went into halftime leading 14-7.  The West scoring plays were 6 yard and 5 yard TD rushes by Malik Grove.  The Aves then hammered out a 10 play, 51 yard drive to tie the game, 14-14, with 20 minutes left on the clock.  As the clock wound down each team threatened the other but neither could score sending the game into overtime.  Sycamore had the first o.t. possession and scored a TD but the extra point attempt failed wide.  Mikel Horton pounded the ball in for the Firebirds with multiple runs, hitting pay dirt with a three yard plunge to tie the game at 20-20. Justin Martin, who had broken his collar bone less than two weeks ago and who missed last weeks game, kicked the game winning extra point. Martin scored on all three of his conversion attempts.  Malik Grove was the Firebird’s leading rusher picking up 111 yard on 23 carries while recording two TD’s.  Horton needed just 14 carries to add 95 yards and the game tying TD.  Grove exceeded the century mark passing by ringing up 140 yards through the air.  In addition to his running, Horton was also Groves favorite target hauling in 3 passes for a team leading 54 yards.  Tony Gabbard led the team in solo tackles with 7 and total tackles with 10.

West took the opening kick off and marched the ball down the field in just over 2 minutes to score on a 20 yard Malik Grove run.  Mason took about 3 minutes to go the other way, score tied 7-7.  The Firebirds regained the lead 13-7 following a Mikel Horton 8 yard rush late in the first period.  A Mason FG brought the Comets to within 3 (13-10) early in the second stanza but West finished out the half with a second Grove TD and a school record 51 yard field goal by Justin Martin setting the score at 20-10 at the intermission. In the second half the two teams traded touch down runs, two by Mason and two more by Grove, a 2 yard plunge and a 7 yard run.  Mikel Horton was the games leading rusher with 120 yards to raise his career rushing total to 2309 yards the 10th highest total in the 55 year history of Lakota district football. Horton was also West’s leading receiver with 3 catches totaling 32 yards.  Grove’s single game total of 4 TDs is a personal best bringing his season total to 9.  C.J. Stalker had a game high 15 tackles including a team leading 7 solo tackles.

West led from start to finish completely overwhelming the previously unbeaten Indians.  The Firebirds ran 69 offensive plays for 419 yards while allowing Fairfield just 213 yards on 52 plays. The Indians ran the ball into the West defensive wall 19 times and were only able to come away with 24 yards on the ground.  West opened the scoring 3 minutes into the game with a 7 play drive capped by a 1 yard Mikel Horton TD run.  With 3 minutes remaining in the first period Fairfield got their only score with a 43 yard field goal to pull within 4 points (7-3).  Mikel Horton ripped off a game high 122 yards on the ground with backfield mate Kole Gentry chipping in with 73 more.  Four of West’s five TD’s came on running plays.  In addition to Horton’s first running TD, Malik Grove ran the ball in twice, first from 4 yards out and then from 11.  Kole Gentry had the final TD, a 4 yard plunge.  Grove was also effective through the air.  He had 10 pass completions in 15 attempts without any interceptions accounting for 110 yards gained. Grove had 3 completions each to wide receiver Braxton Neal and running back Kole Gentry for 48 yards and 27 yards respectively. Grove threw a 16 yard strike to Horton to put West up 28-3 early in the third stanza.  Justin Martin was a workman like 5 for 5 kicking the extra point conversions.  C.J. Stalker was credited with a game high 8 tackles, 6 solo.  Jawan Holmes also had 6 solo tackles and the games lone pass interception. Paxson Robinson had the evenings only quarterback sack.

West started the game by kicking off to Princeton and then taking the ball back 17 seconds later when Tyler Jones intercepted a pass, which in turn led to a Justin Martin 24 yard field goal just over a minute into the game.  West then kicked to the Vikings again and a few plays later Jones picks off another Princeton pass, this time followed by a Malik Grove 9 yard rushing TD setting the score at 10-0 seven minutes into the game. The second quarter was a succession of the West defense holding the Vikings to three and out followed by Firebird drives on the ground culminating in TD’s.  In the second quarter in was Horton on an 8 yard run, followed by Horton on a 3 yard run, followed by Grove breaking one from 55 yards out, followed by Kole Gentry from the six.  Halftime score 38-0.  The Vikes kicked off to start the second half and were all passed by Jawan Holmes going in the other direction to set the score at 45-0 just 20 seconds into the second half.  Eight minutes into the second half all the West starters on both sides of the ball were out of the game but the West lead continued to mount reaching 52-0 before Princeton could get on the board.  Malik Grove, Mikel Horton, Kole Gentry, and Blake Darland each ran for a pair of TD’s.  Grove picked up 173 yards rushing, Horton was close behind with 138, then Daland with 70, followed by Kole Gentry with 62.  Justin Martin was 9 for 9 kicking the extra points which when combined with his field goal contributed 12 points.  The West defense held the Vikings to 274 yards of total offense just over half of their usual output.  In addition to Tyler Jones two interceptions that led to early scores the defense made two goal line stands that ended when they stripped the ball on the one yard line causing fumbles they then recovered in the end zone to squelch what looked like sure Princeton scoring opportunities.  Tony Gabbard made one of these key fumble recoveries and Jawan Holmes made the other.  C.J. Stalker was the teams leading tackler with 8 (3 solo).  Emlemdi Bashir had 4 solo tackles.  Patrick Che had the only quarterback sack of the game.
New Lakota West team records were set for most points scored in a game, for the widest margin of victory in a game, for the most yards rushing in a game (542), and for the most yards of total offense (564) in a game.

West wins a squeakier 10-7.  This game was played mostly between the 20 yard lines. Oak Hills got inside the West 20 just once in the first three quarters of the game and that drive ended with a missed 31 yard first quarter FG attempt.  Similarly West got inside the Oak Hills 20 just once in the first three quarters.  A Firebird drive stalled out on the Highlanders 4 yard line and then came up empty with a missed 21 yard FG.  West drew first blood when Justin Martin made good on a 38 yard field goal at the 8:42 mark in the third stanza.  The middle of the field tussle then resumed until the Highlanders took the lead (3-7) with a 22 yard scoring run with 8 minutes left in the game.  Things were looking bleak for the Firebirds late in the fourth quarter with Oak Hills holding the ball and the lead with just 2.5 minutes remaining. At that point the West defense held forcing an Oak Hills punt which was blocked by Devon Booker and recovered by Dan Vonderhaar.  At that point the Firebirds had 41 yards to go and 1:22 to do it.  After being initially dropped for an 8 yard loss Malik Grove came back with a 23 yard run to put the ball on the Oak Hills 26.  West then employed the Mikel Horton battering ram for four consecutive rushes that gave the Firebirds a first down on the one yard line.  Grove went in on a sneak to set the score at 10-7 with just 58 seconds showing on the clock.  The game was essentially over when Tony Gabbard got a 4th down sack giving the ball back to West with one second left.  Mikel Horton led all rushers with 116 yards on 19 carries. Grove went into the game as the all time Lakota passing yardage co-leader and threw for 55 yards to take sole possession of that record.  Jarin Higgenbotham helped Grove achieve the new passing record by gathering in three catches for 46 yards.  C.J. Stalker was the games leading tackler with 13 (8 solo).

The Firebirds never trailed but the Thunderhawks stayed within striking distance until the last play of the game.  A first quarter West drive stalled just short of the goal allowing East to take over on downs inside their own 5 yard line.  As the Hawks tried to run the ball Devin Pearson forced a fumble that Emmanuel Tshabola recovered and ran back 6 yards to give West a 7-0 lead.  With 1:55 left in the first period East tied the score at 7-0.  In the second quarter the Firebirds strung together an 11 play 62 yard drive capped by a 3 yard TD run by Malik Grove to retake the lead 17-4.  Seconds before the half ended East used a 29 yard field goal to pull within three, 14-10.  East pulled even closer early in the third stanza with another field goal, this one from 27 yards out, leaving the Firebirds ahead by a single point, 14-13.  The Firebirds responded with two scoring drives in the third period. The first ended with a 36 yard Mikel Horton TD and the second with a 5 yard Horton TD giving West some breathing room at 28-13.  East scored another TD 34 seconds before the end of the third period pulling to within eight, 28-20.  Four minutes into the final quarter Malik Grove ripped off a 45 yard run give West a 34-20 advantage.  The extra point try was blocked.  East gamely came back with another TD setting the score at 34-27 with 4:24 remaining.  East later got the ball back on downs but could not penetrate the 50 yard line before time ran out.  Malik Grove had a tremendous all around game completing an astonishing 12 of 13 pass attempts with no interceptions and advancing the ball 154 yards through the air.  He also rushed for 98 yards and two TD’s.  Mikel Horton gained a game high 138 yards enroute to his two TD’s.   Grove completed 2 passes to Dante Jones that totaled 69 yards and connected with four throws to Jarin Higginbotham for 40 yards. Justin Martin made good on 3 of 4 extra points with one getting blocked.  The defense also turned in big plays.  In addition to the Pearson / Tshaboa scoring play Dan Vonderharr intercepted an East pass and ran it back for 30 yards. Che Patrick and Paxson Robinson had sacks with Robinson’s sack being the game ending play.  C.J. Stalker and Trent Rogers helped stifle the East offense by contributing 14 and 8 tackles respectively.

Pickerington Central and Lakota West exchanged possessions in the first two minutes of the game and then began exchanging touch downs.  Pickerington Central scored 2 minutes into the game and Lakota West scored on a Mikel Horton 24 yard run a little over a minute later, score tied 7-7.  The Panthers scored again with 2 minutes remaining in the first quarter followed by a West touch down a minute after that.  This time on a 19 yard pass play from Malik Grove to Braxton Neal.  End of first quarter, score tied 14-14.  Central struck again 4 minutes into the second quarter only to see the Firebirds tie it again 21-21 following an 18 yard pass from Malik Grove to Jarin Higginbotham 4 minutes later.  Pickerington scored their fourth TD 2 minutes before the end of the half with West answering the challenge again via a Mikel Horton 17 yard TD run with 7:32 remaining in the third quarter to set the score at 28-28.  At that point both defenses stiffened but the Panthers capitalized with a 20 yard field goal to take the lead for the fifth time in the game (28-31).  From that point forward dropped passes and penalties stymied the Firebird offense.  The Panthers added an insurance TD with 6:26 remaining in the game and then held on for a 28-31 win.  West team leaders were Mikel Horton with 23 rushes for 128 yards and two touchdowns.  Malik Grove with 8 pass completions and no interceptions to tally 116 yards and included two touchdown throws.  Braxton Neal made 3 catches for a team high 53 yards and a TD followed by Jarid Higgonbotham also with 3 catches good for a total of 30 yards and a TD.  The Firebird's leading tacklers were Jawan Holmes with 9 solo tackles and Tony Gabbard also with 9 tackles ,two assisted.  Gabbard also forced a fumble which was recovered by Michel Klunk. Klunk also had the games only pass interception, and chipped in with 3 tackles of his own.
