10/15 GMC @ VOA

The Lakota East men’s cross country had a very strong showing at this past weekend’s G.M.C. Championships at Voice of America Park. The Thunderhawk men placed 2nd overall behind Mason High School. Lakota East was led by junior Dustin Horter who set a blistering pace, covering the first mile in 4:26, to run away with the individual crown by a 42 second margin. Crossing the finish Line next for East, placing 8th and 9th overall, were seniors Dan Leonard (16:30.1) and Max Sellers (16:30.8). These two efforts move Leonard and Sellers into a tie for the 16th fastest time in Lakota East cross country history. The Hawks’ 4th man, and having a breakthrough race, was junior Logan Stumpf who placed 24th overall in a time of 17:12.8. Running strong, rounding out the top 5 scorers, and keeping East in the runner-up team position was senior Blake Dodson who placed 28th overall in 17:27.7.

8/26 Loveland won 31-14 1-0 0-0

East Senior running back Tyler VanFossen set career highs with 26 carries, 239 yards and three touchdowns as the Thunderhawks opened the 2016 season with a convincing 31-14 win over Loveland in a Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown matchup at Lakota East.

The contest was played on Saturday morning as Friday night storms forced a postponement. VanFossen  also connected on a 32-yard field goal and all four PAT attempts while forcing Loveland to start drives deep in its own territory with booming kickoffs, one of which landed about three yards past the end zone. Junior quarterback Dylan Fry was 4-of-7 for 66 yards and a touchdown, a 16-yard screen pass to junior running back Jeffrey Garcia.

As a team the East offense rushed for 337 yards and passed for another 66. The defense gave up two 100+ yard efforts by Tiger RB's but were able to make stops and force mistakes good enough for an opening season win.

Next up East will host Pickerington HS this Friday night. The contest has a special 7:30 pm kickoff start.

game stats
9/2 Pickerington lost 37-34 1-1 0-0

East dropped a 37-34 non-conference game to Pickerington North on Friday night. The Hawks took and early 14-0 lead but PN got back in it with an effective passing attack. Still Lakota East led at the half 14-7.

The third quarter was not good for the home team. PN ripped off 23 unanswered points before a late surge by the Hawks gave them a chance to tie or win the game. East got two fourth quarter TD's on rushes by Silas Ingram (4-yards) and Dylan Fry (47-yards). The Hawks had the ball at the Pickerington 30 yard line with less than two minutes to play, but turned it over on downs to seal the win for PN.

Statistical highlights: Dylan Fry 6/15 161 yards and two TD's. Tyler VanFossen 77 yards rushing on 24 carries and a TD. Dylan Fry 72 yards rushing on 10 carries and a TD. Xavier Warren 3 receptions for 103 yards and 2 TD's (longest 47 yards).

The Hawks (1-1) will look to get back on track this Friday when they visit Dayton Northmont who lost to Fairfield last week 27-13.

9/9 @ Northmont lost 10-7 1-2 0-0

The Football Hawks fell at Northmont last Friday in a low scoring affair, 10-7. The Hawks got on the scoreboard first in the 2nd quarter on a Tyler VAnFossen 1-yard plunge. The Hawks were not able to put any points on the board after that. Northmont kicked a FG and scored a TD in the third period to get a lead and win the contest.

East was outgained offensively 283-187. QB Dylan Fry was 5/11 for 59 yards passing. Tyler VanFossen had 16 carries for 44 yards. Xavier Warren notched 2 catches for 44 yards on the night.

GMC play gets underway this Friday when East (1-2) will host Oak Hills (1-2). The Highlander defeated Loveland in week 3 45-28.

9/16 Oak Hills lost 30-7 1-3 0-1

The football team struggled against GMC foe Oak Hills at home last Friday night. After a long lightening delay, the Hawks and Highlanders got things underway, but it was Oak Hills winning 30-7. The contest was close at the half (16-7). Neither team could crack each others defenses in the third with the Highlanders adding 14 more in the final stanza. Dylan Fry threw for 136 yards and a TD on the night.

East will try to get on track this Friday when they visit Middletown (0-4).

9/23 @ Middletown won 40-3 2-3 1-1

East evened their GMC record to 1-1 with a lopsided defeat at Middletown last Friday. The Hawks dominated the Middies 40-3. East gave up an early field goal, but the defense pitched a shutout the rest of the way. The Thunderhawks outgained their opponent 371-93 in total yardage. Senior Tyler Glenn returned to action gaining 128 yards on 19 carries and 2 TDs. The Hawks got TDs from Tyler Van Fossen, Silas Ingram and Donny Wilkinson. Ingram rushed for 58 yards on the night.

Homecoming is this Friday as Lakota East (2-3) hosts Hamilton Big Blue (3-2, 0-2).

9/30 Hamilton won 31-28 3-3 2-1

Lakota East fought off a resurgent Hamilton Big Blue last Friday night to grab a 31-28 victory over their GMC foes. East (3-3, 2-1 Greater Miami Conference) had led by 21 points in the second quarter and was up 24-7 at halftime, but HHS (3-3, 0-3) took advantage of two turnovers to battle back and went ahead for the first time with 1:21 left after three consecutive rushing touchdowns.

The Thunderhawks were determined to not let a game they had dominated in the first half, slip get away. After it looked like Big Blue had rallied for a fourth quarter come-from-behind win, a long return on the ensuing kickoff put East at its own 48 and set the Hawks up for their go-ahead score. Junior Dylan Fry not only had the game-winning touchdown pass, but also rushed for a 12-yard gain on fourth-and-12 to move into Hamilton territory and extend the drive with 43 seconds left. Fry lofted a 20-yard pass to Xavier Warren in the end zone with 25 seconds left in the game to give East an exciting last second TD and win.

The Big Blue had two first-half turnovers to help East take a comfortable lead early as defensive back Allen Jantausch had an interception and a fumble recovery to help set up two of those scoring drives. The Hawks drove 56 yards for a 7-0 lead on Tyler VanFossen’s 6-yard run after the interception. Tyler Glenn then added a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs on the next two drives — the second coming after Jantausch recovered a fumble at the Big Blue 30-yard line — to make it a 21-0 lead with 7:07 left in the second quarter.

East will go on the road this Friday when they visit Sycamore (2-4, 1-2). The Aves fell to Fairfield last week by a score of 35-27.

10/7 @ Sycamore lost 28-0 3-4 2-2

The Thunderhawks couldn't get anything going this past Friday night at Sycmaore, losing 28-0. The Hawks record dips to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the GMC.

The Thunderhawks will be ready for Mason this Friday night when they host the Comets (5-2, 3-1) for the final home of the season on senior night.

10//14 Mason won 21-17 4-4 3-2

UPSET!

The Lakota East Thunderhawk football team took down Mason in upset fashion last Friday by a final score of 21-17. The Hawks never quit after what many thought woiuld be a blow out. East battled back after a half time 14-6 deficit, basically shutting down the Comets in the 2nd half.

Mason got an early 7-0 lead after a defensive 1st quarter. Lakota East scored on a 6 yard TD run but the XP is no good. Mason leads 7-6 with 2:12 left in the 2nd quarter. The Comets scored again before the end of the 2nd quarter and took a 14-6 lead in to the locker room.

The tables turned in the 2nd half. East got on the board at 7:20 in the third quarter on a 6-yard pass to Tyler VanFossen from Dylan Fry and all of a sudden it was a tie game at 14-14. Mason added a 40 yard FG from Andrew Hauer later in the third to go up 17-14.

Lakota East didn’t take long to respond. After penalties forced the Thunderhawks to its own 11-yard line and facing a 3rd-and-19, Andrew Jaeger found Xavier Warren in the open field, who took the ball 77 yards down to the Mason 11. Fry capped off the drive himself, taking snap and running it in from six yards out to take the 21-17 lead. That score stood until the final buzzer sounded.

Lakota East finished the game with 164 rushing yards on 44 rushes, led VanFossen who had 79 yards of his own. Ingram and Fry had the two rushing touchdowns for the Thunderhawks. The Thunderhawks also had 133 passing yards on only four completions. The longest pass for Lakota East came from Jaeger, who tossed a 77 yard bomb to Xavier Warren.

East evens their record to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the GMC. They will visit Fairfield (5-3, 3-2) who got shutout by Colerain last week 28-0.

From Coach Combs...

I wanted to pass along a VERY proud coaching moment (and should be for you parents) this week at Westbrook invitational. Obviously our team played very well and one the event, which is great. BUT, more moving to me personally was when the Lexington H.S. Coach, who we have never played with or met, stopped me towards the end of the round to tell me how classy our men were, and how fun is what for their team to play with us. He said that to a player, all of their guys enjoyed their day with ours. THESE COMMENTS make me as proud to be a coach as any that I could hear, or any achievement our teams could achieve. GREAT job men!

Next up East will participate at the LaSalle Invitational at Clovernook on Monday, Aug. 22nd.

East will be at Armco Park on Monday (today) for their annual 3-club challenge.

FROM COACH COMBS....

OUR jv team keeps rolling along with wins and good scores. As Coach Moore has probably told the guys----it is common to see younger players have scores that are up and down as they master the ability to be consistent. What is really nice to see is that many of the guys are taking their turns going low! THE key to being consistent (when your body is growing an inch a week) is a very solid short game, and mastering the items that you can control: Set up, posture, balance and tempo! Keep up the good work!

Varsity men won the Lasalle Inv @ clovernook on Monday with a very solid score of 300. 300 or lower has been one of our goals each time out---so hopefully we keep doing it. SO Good to see so many parents, grandparents watching at Weatherwax yesterday….. I LOVE seeing our families out there---so keep coming!

8/31 Mason Top 12 @ Heritage CC

Next East will participate in the Kettering Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 6th at NCR.

FROM COACH COMBS...

Pretty solid week for the East Golf Program. The Jv boys keep rolling along with dual match wins and some solid scores. On Saturday the men battled their way to a 336 and a 5th place finish in the top JV field in the state (results attached). We tied the 4th place team but lost on a 5th score tiebreaker, and beat 6th place Upper Arlington by 1 shot. SPEAKS to the importance of each shot when so few strokes separate many teams. Just one put, 1 chip, 1 shot that you hit when you thought your score didn't matter….every shot counts, and the only shot that matters is the one you are hitting. SO great to see so many family members watching the boys at Hickory and I had a blast watching them play. Very positive support from moms, dads, grandparents and sisters! Solid scores but MUCH room for improvement around the greens.

* We are entering an exciting time for our season and also a time where players can start pressing to make our final 5 and 6 man rotations. We play 6 men at GMC's and only 5 in state playoffs. RIGHT now, are top 4 are pretty set with Kyle Schmidt, Will Schmidt, Ben Irvin, & Drew Mahon. Alex Dunaway has claimed a stake to #5 with a solid week (and a 74 at Beavercreek yesterday). REGARDLESS of where each player ends up playing in the coming events, we really want a unified team that is celebrating together. I really like the way this group is coming together and want to keep it going!

**New match on Silver schedule this week at Browns Run (Thursday) and Monday at Alter Inv….I will take a mixture of players to ALTER (miami ValleyGC) on Monday so make sure you let me know if you want to go.

9/6 Kettering Invite @ NCR CC

EAST men’s golf team shot a blistering 283 (3 over par as a team) yesterday to win Kettering Inv. at NCR C.C. Other scores: Will Schmidt 72, Peyton Houston 73, Ben Irvin 73, Alex Dunaway 76, Drew Mahon 79.

This was the Hawks 3rd Tourney win in a row! Next up for the Hawks is the Hadley Invitational at Weatherwax on Saturday, Sept. 10th.

GMC Three Peat For East Boys Golf!!

The Lakota East Boys Golf team made league history yesterday at Glenview Golf Course. The 2016 Thunderhawks not only won their third straight GMC title (seventh overall), they did so in historic fashion. Their team total of 599 (291-308) for the two day event set a new GMC low score record. The former record was Sycamore's 602 shot in 2008. The boy's golf team has won more GMC Championships than any other team sport in Lakota East's 20-year history. Since 1969, the Hawks 7th league golf title ranks them behind Fairfields 12 overall GMCchampionships, followed by Middletowns total of 9.

It was a dramatic ending at the final hole on Thursday. East and Mason were about even after the Comets had surged back from a day one 9-stroke deficit. East's Kyle Schmidt landed his 2nd shot within 5 feet of the hole on #18, then dropped his eagle putt to seal the win. Schmidt, only a sophomore, was named the GMC Player of the Year for his two day total of 139 (two off the GMC all-time record).

“I am so proud of this team, and how they have responded to adversity this year," said 2016 GMC Coach of the Year Jeff Combs." All of the guys contributed to the win and were grinding til the end."

"They shot lights out in the 1st round, and then took a few good shots from a very talented and well coached Mason squad. Going into our back nine our lead had been erased, and it appeared we might be down by a shot or 2. Drew Mahon went -1 on his last 3 holes, Will Schmidt birdied 18, and of course Kyle Schmidt Eagles the 520yard # 18 with a large gallery watching."

Alex Dunaway, Drew Mahon, and Kyle Schmidt earned 1st team All GMC honors. Peyton Houston, Ben Irvin and Will Schmidt each received 2nd team All GMC recogniton. See all scores below:

Congratulations to the East boys JV team who shot a blistering 325 last week to win the GMC JV event.

East is the top ranked team in the latest city polls. The Hawks will begin preparing to defend their Sectional title on Tuesday, Oct. 4th back at Glenview.

From Coach Combs...

JV:
OUR Jv squad finished off the year in serious fashion by winning the GMC tourney, and then winning the Centerville Inv! The latter is the best field we play in all year, and the men beat teams like Upper Arlington, Dublin Jerome and Centerville, which are all 3 state powers. SO proud of the way this squad attacks their rounds and finds a way to bring good scores in. So much potential here-----so let’s keep working!

Varsity Silver:
Our men ended their season with a solid victory against Elder at the ELKS. Not bad for a squad that brought home 2 Inv. wins this year! I am very happy how this squad worked hard on their games throughout the year----not laying off at the end of the season. TRUE team attitudes!

“Those guys were all phenomenal players," said head coach Jeff Combs. “We had more than five guys that could go under par, and this group’s about the same way .It’s so hard to get to state and you can’t take it for granted."

East was the Greater Miami Conference and Cincinnati East sectional team champion this season. The last GMC school to earn a state boys title was Lakota West in 2000. The state tournament will be held next Friday and Saturday at Ohio State University’s Scarlet Course in Columbus.

vs. Princeton/Loveland

@ East 7:00

won 4-3 PK 10-4-3

The boys soccer team advanced in the OHSAA tournament by defeating the Loveland Tigers in an overtime penalty shootout in last night’s rainy match. The Hawks kept the ball on their offensive half of the field for the majority of the match and although created chances to take a lead, were stopped by Loveland’s goal keeper. The defense held strong throughout the evening, limiting the Tigers to 5 shots on goal and only one corner kick. East had 12 corner kick opportunities but were unable to capitalize.

After 80 minutes of regulation play and 30 minutes of overtime play, the score remained 0-0 and would be decided in a pk shootout. The Hawks were elected to shoot first. Junior captain, Jak Birdsong stepped up first for the Hawks and successfully buried his shot putting pressure on the first Tiger shooter. Senior goal keeper, Conner Rehling made a great read on Loveland’s first attempt, but the ball deflected past him, evening the shootout at 1-1.

Senior, Austin Eldridge, looked to put the Hawks back in the lead as the 2nd shooter, but was denied by the Tiger goal keeper, putting the advantage in their favor. After Loveland’s 2nd shooter shot the ball under a diving Rehling, putting the Tigers up 2-1, it was up to senior captain, Jack Harper to keep the Hawk’s hopes alive.

As he’s done in the past, he fired his shot past Loveland’s keeper evening the shootout to 2-2. In another close save attempt, Loveland’s third shooter placed his shot just out of Rehling’s reach keeping the shootout in their favor 3-2.

The pressure then fell to senior, Bryce Perrigo, who calmly stepped up to the 12 yard penalty mark and fired his shot in the net evening the score to 3-3. The odds evened, when Loveland’s fourth shooter sent his shot over the crossbar setting up East’s fifth shooter senior, Logan Combs to keep momentum for the Hawks.

After the referee signaled for Combs to shoot, he successfully placed his shot past the Tiger’s goal keeper giving East a 4-3 lead and putting the pressure on Loveland’s last shooter. With suspense heavy in the stadium, East’s boys celebrated after watching the fifth Tiger shooter sail his shot over the crossbar, giving the Hawk’s the victory and advancing them to the sectional finals on Monday night.

The Hawks squandered an opportunity for a shutout for senior keeper Emily Niehaus when a series of defensive miscues allowed a talented Seton forward to score a goal past the outstretched arms of Niehaus, who had two saves in the game.

The Lakota East JV squad held on for a 4-3 victory over Seton, to earn its first victory, as well. The Hawks will host Centerville on Saturday night at the Hawks Nest.  JV game kicks off at 5 p.m. and the Varsity match at 7 p.m.

8/27 Centerville won 2-1 2-0 0-0

The Varsity team stayed tough for 80 minutes to come from behind for a well-earned 2-1 victory against the Centerville Elks on Saturday night at the Hawks Nest.

"Any time you play a strong and historical program like Centerville, you have to be prepared to do battle,” said Head Coach Tom McEwan.  “It is and will always be 80 minutes of grind-it-out soccer."

The Elks scored first midway through the first half, and that held up until halftime.  But the Thunderhawks came out strong in the second half, scoring two goals and playing tough defense to claim the win.

"The match against the Elks was an emotional one for our players, for many reasons, and collectively as a program we managed to stay focused on the task at hand, said McEwan"

Senior Talia Brown put the Hawks on the board, converting on a penalty kick after a foul in the box.  The second goal came late in the game on a nice shot from freshman Samantha Dodd, with the assist from sophomore Kate Larbes. Senior Keeper Emily Niehaus had five saves in the win.

McEwan added, “In order for our program to start being recognized, even locally, as a competitive program, we have to continue to win these tough games. Our schedule leaves us very little room for error and every time we step on the pitch we have to be prepared to play hard for the entire match."

The JV team set the tone for the evening games against Centerville securing a 2-1 victory, as well, in the first match of the night.

"We have a nice blend of experienced players and new players who bring a heightened sense of awareness to the game,” noted McEwan.  “At times, as a coach, it is fun to sit back and watch them play the game.  At others times I can only describe it as frantic soccer.  We have to learn how to play 80 minutes of composed soccer."

The Hawks 2-0-0 face Ursuline Academy on Tuesday, August 30.  Games will be played at the Blue Ash Sports Complex.  JV kicks off at 5 p.m., followed by the Varsity at 7 p.m.

GO HAWKS!

8?30 @ Ursuline tie 0-0 2-0-1 0-0

The Lakota East Women’s Soccer team took on the Ursuline Academy Lions in a match at the Blue Ash Soccer Complex on Tuesday evening.  Temperatures on the field were over 100 degrees, but both sides played 80 minutes of intense soccer and came away with a 0-0 stalemate.

“The Ursuline team is a well-coached group of young ladies who traditionally play a nice brand of soccer,” commented Head Coach Tom McEwan.  “You know when you step on the pitch you are going to get some strong competition.”

The game had plenty of action, on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, but neither team was able to finish, resulting in a scoreless tie.

“You can tell you are in a good match when the practice fields next to you stop to watch the last 10 minutes of the game,” noted McEwan.  “As I told the girls before the game, with our schedule, we are not going to get through this season without some blemishes on the record.  And while 0-0 for some might not be a good result, for soccer purists it's actually a decent outcome.”

The JV team played a solid match, but fell to the Lions 2-1.

Next up for the Hawks (2-0-1) is Turpin at home on Thursday, September 1.  JV kicks off at 5 p.m., followed by the Varsity game at 7 p.m.

“Our goal this year is to take each game one at a time and not focus on what is next,” said McEwan.  “The goal is not to be at our best in August, but to be at our best in November.  Thirty percent of our Varsity roster is comprised of freshmen who have never played high school soccer, so it's a given that there will be a learning curve.”

9/1 Turpin lost 2-0 2-1-1 0-0

The Lakota East Women’s soccer team took on Turpin at the Hawks Nest on Thursday evening.  It was a fast-paced game with opportunities for both sides.  But it was the Spartans that were able to convert twice to hand the Hawks their first loss of the season 2-0.

This game was another step in our process of learning how to complete an 80-minute game,” said Head Coach Tom McEwan.  “We won’t beat too many teams with 75 percent effort.  In the big picture the coaches saw a lot of positives.  We are on the right path; it’s just a matter of being patient."

The Hawks (2-1-1) travel to Stow, Ohio, tomorrow for afternoon games against D1 powerhouse Walsh Jesuit who has won the last four state championships.  JV kicks off at 1 p.m. and Varsity battles the Warriors at 3 p.m.

GO HAWKS!

9/3 @ Walsh Jesuit lost 1-0 2-2-1 0-0

What a great weekend for the women’s soccer team to travel to Stow and face off against Walsh Jesuit, the No.1 team in Ohio and the No.1 team in the nation on Saturday, September 4. Walsh Jesuit has won the last four State Championships and has not lost a game during that time, so the Thunderhawks knew the games would be the most challenging they have played.

Both the JV and Varsity games were fast-paced and physical.  At the end of each 80-minute match, the Hawks came up short, losing both 1-0.

“We may have come up short on the scoreboard, but we scored major victories in other areas,” said Head Coach Tom McEwan.  “The entire coaching staff could not be any prouder of the effort by both squads. They stepped up and were both competitive against the most storied program in Ohio.”

McEwan noted that the teams had a great group of supporters who made the trip, mostly family and relatives, which meant a lot to the players.  It was also great to see Lakota East Athletic Director Rich Bryant make the 3.5 hour trip to show his support for the program, which was much-appreciated.

"We keep stats for every game, which tells us a lot, but the one stat you cannot measure is the size of the heart that these young ladies have," said McEwan. "We enter GMC league play this week and it is important for us to stay focused on the lessons these games have taught us."

The Thunderhawks take on Hamilton at home on Thursday, September 8.  JV kicks off at 5 p.m., followed by the Varsity match at 7 p.m.

GO HAWKS!

9/8 Hamilton won 2-0 3-2-1 1-0

“With the GMC portion of our schedule kicking off, and it was imperative that we continued to play soccer with a purpose and with an elevated intensity,” said Head Coach Tom McEwan.  “Our out-of-league schedule is so brutal that we cannot afford to have slips during league play.”

On Thursday night at home vs. Hamilton, the Hawks didn’t waste time getting on the board, scoring their first goal less than 10 minutes into the game.  Sophomore Kate Larbes found the net on an assist from senior Abigail Mathews.  The second goal came in the second half when junior Alexa Bencic scored with an assist from senior Talia Brown.  That 2-0 score held up, as the Hawks’ defense held Hamilton Big Blue scoreless.

“The weather made things difficult for us all evening, as we battled both rain and wind,” noted McEwan.  “Hamilton has the potential to be dangerous on any given night, so keeping the play in front of us was crucial.  The back line was solid and kept Hamilton in-check.”

Senior Keeper Emily Niehaus recorded at shutout with four saves.

“Over the course of six games we have given up five goals -- the majority of which have come because of minor break downs in our overall style of play,” said McEwan.  “As we get into the heart of our GMC schedule, we need to do a better job of eliminating the minor mistakes that lead to easy goals for opposing teams.”

Lakota East (3-2-1) (GMC1-0-0) will travel to Mason on Tuesday, Sept. 13, to take on the Comets in a key league matchup.  The JV game starts at 5 p.m. and the Varsity game will kick off at 7 p.m.

GO HAWKS!

9/13 @ Mason lost 1-0 3-3-1 1-1

East Battles, but Comes Up Short in 1-0 Loss to Mason

The Lakota East Girls soccer team traveled to Mason on Tuesday evening to take on highly regarded GMC opponent Mason.  Both teams played with intensity and were scoreless at the end of the first half.  It was Mason who scored the lone goal in the second half, defeating East 1-0.

“As the coaching staff has stressed all season, as soon as we stop making mental errors, we will see the results we expect on the field,” said Head Coach Tom McEwan.  “The Mason game was no different.  You cannot allow a quality team like Mason the opportunity to capitalize on a mental error; they will do it every time.”

“I say after every game, how incredibly pleased I am by the effort of the players as a whole; they truly put forth a tremendous amount of effort to be successful,” said McEwan.  “As a staff, we remain patient and look forward to the game when we put all facets of the game together, both the physical and the mental components.”

McEwan praised his defensive line.  “The back line has done a tremendous job of shutting down the other teams’ most dangerous players, time and time again,” he noted.  “The goals we give up, almost without exception, are the result of not being engaged 100 percent in the flow of the game at the moment the goal is scored.”

The JV team came up short, losing to Mason 1-0, as well.

The competition doesn’t get any easier for East (3-3-1) (1-1-0) as they take on the Springboro, ranked No. 9 in the most recent D1 State Poll, at the Hawks Nest on Saturday, September 17.  JV kicks off at 5 p.m., followed by the Varsity match at 7 p.m.

Fans are encouraged to fill the stands on Saturday evening and cheer the Hawks on to victory!

GO HAWKS!

9/17 Springboro lost 2-0 3-4-1 1-1

The Lakota East Thunderhawks took on the Springboro Panthers, currently ranked No. 9 in the D1 state poll, on Saturday evening at the Hawks Nest, falling 2-0. The Panthers struck early, scoring the game’s only two goals in the first eight minutes of the game.  The Hawks worked hard to even the score, and toughened up the defensive effort to not allow any additional goals from the visitors, but were unable to overcome a talented Springboro squad.

“It is no secret that we have one of the toughest schedules in Southwest Ohio, if not Ohio,” noted Head Coach Tom McEwan.  “We put the schedule in place anticipating a youthful squad and the opportunity to allow them to grow from experience. The next three games are against GMC opponents and we need to demonstrate that we have learned from the lessons experienced during the first half of our schedule.”

McEwan added, “Becoming frustrated with an overall record is easy; realizing that we are becoming stronger each game is the difficult part. Culture looks for immediate results, but building a program requires laying a foundation for growth. It cannot be about each game and the subsequent result, instead it has to be about maturing as a team, and as a program. I still think we have our best soccer ahead of us this season,” said McEwan.  “We have been competitive in every match versus some of the top talent in Ohio.  Eventually, it will click and I truly feel it will be worth the lumps we are taking now.”

The JV team played a solid match, scoring a late goal to tie the Panthers 1-1.

The Hawks (3-4-1) (1-1-0) play on Tuesday, September 20, at Colerain.  JV kicks off at 5 p.m., followed by the Varsity game at 7 p.m.

9/20 @ Colerain won 3-1 4-4-1 2-1

Lakota East defeated Colerain on Tuesday by a score of 3-1. The Hawks went deep into their lineup to find a spark to help overcome the Colerain Cardinals who took an early 1-0 lead on a long shot from a free kick.

"Truly a team effort tonight,” said Head Coach Tom McEwan.  “We had a lackluster start to the game and found ourselves in an early hole.  Fortunately, we have a deep and talented team and I am never worried about wholesale substitutions if the game calls for it.  Sometimes you just need to find a spark and you never know who that might come from."

According to McEwan, "A shift in personnel settled the game down and restored order, which helped set the table for a second half surge in offense."

Freshman Samantha Dodd came up big, scoring two goals in the second half to put the Hawks ahead 2-1.  Senior Sydney Pinder kept the momentum going, adding a third goal on an assist from sophomore Kate Larbes, to give East the 3-1 win.  Senior keeper Emily Niehaus helped to prevent any further scoring by Colerain, recording four saves.

"Without question our starters struggled to create a rhythm to the game and we just seemed to be out of sync,” said McEwan.  “We have been working on a new attacking set and it just wasn't there the first half."

"We had a number of players accumulate minutes tonight who did a fantastic job when they were on the field,” added McEwan.  “We stress it daily, but to be successful everyone has to stay engaged and be ready to contribute.  Without question that was the case tonight."

Junior Emma Collett earned the team spirit stick.  “She did a great job of staying poised and making us dangerous," noted McEwan.

The Hawks (4-4-1) (2-1-0) take on GMC league opponent Middletown on Thursday, September 22, at the Hawks Nest.  JV kicks off at 5 p.m., followed by the Varsity match at 7 p.m.

GO HAWKS!

9/22 Middletown won 7-2 5-4-1 3-1

The Hawks were too much for the Middletown Middies on Thursday night.  The team did not waste any time, scoring its first goal less than three minutes into the contest, on the way to a 7-2 victory. First goal was scored by senior Sydney Pinder.  The Hawks tallied three more in the first half with goals from sophomore Kate Larbes, freshman Samantha Dodd and freshman Alexia Huon.  Assists came from Dodd, Larbes and senior Maggie Boughner.

Toward the end of the first half, East’s senior keeper Emily Niehaus came out to save a long shot and collided with the oncoming Middletown player in the box, resulting in a questionable yellow card which set up a penalty kick for the Middies. “Emily has been rock-solid for us this year in the net,” said Head Coach Tom McEwan.  “Nothing better than senior leadership in critical positions on any soccer team.  Unfortunately, this play did not go in her favor”

With the yellow card, Niehaus came off the field and junior field player Abby Stoughton stepped in to defend the PK.  “Nothing like putting a ton of stress on a player and asking her to step in on a PK,” said McEwan.  “But as is the game of soccer, the advantage usually goes to the shooter, and so it did in this case.  I am very proud of Abby; she stepped up and did her best, which is all we could ask.  In the end it was an incidental goal that didn't impact the outcome of the match.”

The Hawks picked up three more goals in the second half – one from Boughner and two from senior Talia Brown.  Pinder, freshmen Anna Desalvo and sophomore Jenna Kralik were credited with assists.

“Senior Day, always a very special and emotional day for our program, is this Saturday and we can turn our focus on honoring our eight seniors and facing off against another GMC opponent Princeton,” noted McEwan.  The JV team kicks off at 1 p.m.  On-field ceremony to honor the seniors and their parents will follow the completion of the JV game.  The Varsity match is at 3 p.m.

Come to the Hawks Nest to cheer for our teams and help honor our seniors.  GO HAWKS!

9/24 Princeton won 6-1 6-4-1 4-1

East girls soccer got a 4-1 win over Princeton last Saturday on senior day.

“Senior Day is always a special and memorable day for our program as we honor those players, as well as their parents, who have contributed time and talent to the Lakota East women’s soccer team; and this year’s celebration was no exception,” said Head Coach Tom McEwan.  The Hawks honored were Abby Anderson, Erin Babcock, Maggie Boughner, Talia Brown, Jayde Hoffmann, Abigail Mathews, Emily Niehaus and Sydney Pinder.

The Hawks’ emotions were high and their effort on the field were strong on Saturday.  Senior Erin Babcock and sophomore Kate Larbes each scored two goals, while seniors Talia Brown and Jayde Hoffmann each contributed a goal.  The assists came from senior Abigail Mathews with two and junior Alexa Bencic with one.  Senior keeper Emily Niehaus had one save.

The day was made even more special when senior Abby Anderson, who is recovering from ACL surgery, was able to take the field for the game-opening kickoff.  She received a pass from her sophomore sister Lexie on the kickoff and was able to be a part of this memorable day on the field.  “We are thankful to the Princeton program for its help in making this happen,” noted McEwan.

The JV team had a successful day, as well defeating Princeton 6-1.

Next up for East (6-4-1) (4-1-0) is an away game versus league opponent Fairfield on Thursday, September 29.  JV kicks off at 5 p.n. followed by the Varsity match at 7 p.m.

9/29 @ Fairfield lost 2-1 6-5-1 4-2

East traveled to Fairfield on Thursday evening to take on league opponent the Fairfield Indians.

The fast and aggressive Fairfield team scored two goals in the first half, while holding the Hawks scoreless.  East came out strong in the second half, but could not overcome the deficit, losing 2-1.  Sophomore Kate Larbes scored the lone East goal.  Senior keeper Emily Niehaus had two saves in the contest.

“Tough match versus Fairfield in another GMC battle,” said Head Coach Tom McEwan.  “Right now we are playing for a decent seed in the post-season tournament and a chance to move as deep into the tourney as we can.  We must continue to improve our intensity in our remaining games.”

Lakota East (6-5-1) 4-2-0) will be in action again on Saturday when they take on Sacred Heart Academy (Louisville), one of the top programs in Kentucky with four State championships and 10 Regional championships.
The JV match kicks off at 11 a.m., followed by the Varsity match at 1 p.m.

East Beats Top-Ranked Team from Kentucky 3-1

The Lakota East Hawks showed it was up to the challenge on Saturday, defeating the Sacred Heart Academy Valkyries, the No. 1-ranked DI team in Kentucky by a score of 3-1.

“All season we have talked about turning the corner and playing to our potential,” said Head Coach Tom McEwan.  “Our schedule leaves us little room for error, but a great deal of room to challenge ourselves as a team and as individual players.”

Sacred Heart Academy came in as the top-ranked team in Kentucky by a wide margin, having defeated St. Ursula 4-1 in the Zionsville tournament earlier this year, so the Hawks knew they were a major force.

“We also talk about a signature win,” said McEwan.  “Playing a tough schedule is great, but eventually you have to show that you are up to the challenge and we did just that on Saturday.  The hope is that the team recognizes that we are capable of achieving great things, if we follow the game plan.”

The first goal for the Hawks was a 40-yard blast over the keeper’s outstretched arms from sophomore Jenna Kralik, with the assist from junior Abby Stoughton.  The second goal was scored by freshman Samantha Dodd with an assist from sophomore Kate Larbes.  Dodd returned the favor on a nice cross to Larbes who buried the third goal.

“Given the fact that we were missing senior captain Talia Brown to an injury, we knew others had to step up; as a coaching staff, we were pleased with the effort that was shown,” noted McEwan.  Our seniors have provided us with some phenomenal leadership this season.  The old saying about preparing others to lead when you leave is exactly what this class has done so far this year.  They are doing a great job of helping to shape the future of this program.”

This week brings more challenges, as East (7-5-1) (4-2-0) takes on Oak Hills, the first place team in the GMC, on Tuesday at the Hawks Nest.  JV kicks off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Varsity match at 7:15 p.m.  Wear your Hawks sportswear and come make some noise!

10/4 Oak Hills lost 4-0 7-6-1 4-3

The Hawks were shut out 4-0 on Tuesday night by a tough Oak Hills team, currently first in the GMC with a 7-0-0 record.

“We simply were not prepared mentally or physically for the game last night,” said Head Coach Tom McEwan.  “Oak Hills was able to do what they wanted, when they wanted to do it.”

On a brighter note, the JV team put forth a solid effort against Oak Hills, punctuated by some incredible saves, to preserve a 1-0 victory.

10/6 @ Lakota West lost 1-0 7-7-1 4-4

The Hawks made the short trip to West on Thursday evening to take on the Firebirds, in a matchup of league and cross-town rivals.  East controlled the tempo of the first half and had several scoring opportunities, but could not convert.  The defense held West in check, resulting in a scoreless first half.  The lone goal game late in the second half when West scored on a direct kick just outside the box, giving the Firebirds the 1-0 win.

It was a great night for soccer at the Hawks Nest last evening as the Lakota East Thunderhawks faced another challenge from a solid GMC opponent, the Sycamores Aves, in the final game of the regular season.  The Hawks claimed the victory on a goal from sophomore Jenna Kralik with the assist from freshman Samantha Dodd.  Senior keeper Emily Niehaus had two saves in the match.

“We played a very fluid game tonight on both ends of the field,” said Head Coach Tom McEwan.  “We need to carry this momentum into the tournament and guard against letdowns, as we will likely face a strong opponent right out of the gate.”

The JV team was victorious, as well, with a 3-0 victory over Sycamore.  They finish the season strong at (9-3-4) (7-1-1).

The Hawks (8-7-1) (5-4-0) earned the No. 8 seed in the post-season sectional tournament and have a first round bye.  They will be in action on Saturday, October 22 at 7 p.m. at home against the winner of the Ursuline Academy versus Winton Woods game, which will be played on Tuesday evening.
