Young Sinfonia will perform in an afternoon concert in Gateshead after returning from a week touring the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Young Sinfonia is the prestigious regional youth orchestra made up of around 40 players and trained by visiting conductors and members of Royal Northern Sinfonia. Over the past few years the orchestra has been conducted by international figures such as Garry Walker, Ainars Rubikis, Nicholas Kraemer and Jurjen Hempel and been joined by distinguished soloists such as Howard Shelley, and Mark Simpson, as well as providing concerto opportunities for its members.
Young Sinfonia perform concerts in venues across the North East and also far and wide on international tours. The acclaimed singer, accordionist and clog dancer harnesses innovative stage techniques, brand-new compositions, live looping and multiple surfaces to weave a magical atmosphere around percussive dance.

A 19-piece jazz orchestra playing music from Duke Ellington to Gordon Goodwin via Buddy Rich, Bob Mintzer, Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. Led by guitarist Stephen Glendinning with Paul Grainger on double bass and Mark Robertson on drums. North East jazz guitarist James Birkett interviews Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca, sharing insights on the development of his music from behind the piano and looking at his time with Buena Vista Social Club through to his more recent collaborations. Unsurprisingly, the merger of these two cultures played their part in his musical output, resulting in an album that blends UK vibes with a Caribbean twist. Indeed, the album – inspired by a relationship break-up and the disbandment of his group Mattafix (who scored a hit in 2005 with the single Big City Life) – does boast a heartfelt and personal collection of songs, stemming genres including soul, reggae, dub and soft rock. Album track Didn’t I, with its ‘60s soul groove, sweet soulful harmonies and steel pan accompaniment, is like American doo-wop with a touch of the Caribbean.
Despite his Caribbean connections, Roudette reveals that there have been those who questioned his ethnicity. Roudette admits that his Englishness does earn him the occasional bit of teasing when he’s ‘back home’ with friends in St.


But like so many British-based West Indians, Roudette can identify with the inevitable accent switch-up, which occurs depending on who he’s talking to.
