I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes a couple of months ago and I thought that I would share a little bit of information about it, as it has changed the way that I have been doing my diet and exercise.
Gestational Diabetes is a form of diabetes that affects pregnant women, most women develop it around the 24th week of pregnancy.
Although gestational diabetes doesn’t cause major birth defects, it can cause complications for baby. Shortly after birth, your baby may have low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) because his or her body will still be producing extra insulin in response to your excess glucose. Exercise is also an important part of maintaining your blood sugar as it helps to lower the amount of sugar in your system. If you’re having trouble controlling your blood glucose levels with diet and exercise alone, your doctor may prescribe medication to help you maintain your levels. Speaking of which, I keep a large plastic container in the freezer, and all peelings, ends of things, veggies threatening to go bad, etc (except potatoes) go in it so when I have enough bones to do broth, I have it all handy.
I COMPLETELY agree with not shopping hungry as food you didn’t intend to buy seems to jump into your cart.
Breakfasts are tricky because I am not a morning person and sometimes hubby’s mornings are WAY too early for me. I spend less than an hour on Fridays putting groceries away, cutting up most of my produce.
Again, research shows that protein is especially important to start your day (after all you’re breaking fast) as it helps to regulate blood insulin levels. Just planning 3-4 meals a week, especially focusing on planning those meal for busy nights, will go a long way in helping you and your family eat healthier and save time and money! Most of the symptoms of diabetes are common among all diabetes types such as diabetes type 1, diabetes type 2, pre-diabetes, gestational diabetes, etc.
Symptoms of pre-diabetes are the same, as the diabetes symptoms, most notably lesser and some do not have any symptoms. Management is initiated in Children's ward at Raigmore - either as an in-patient, or, where circumstances permit, on an ambulatory basis. Clear and consistent guidance is essential if families are to effectively develop the skills to manage their child's diabetes. The ketonuria flow chart is also available in a wallet-sized card format (the Ketocard), available from the diabetes centre at Raigmore. Notwithstanding the high incidence of childhood diabetes in Highland, individual GPs are unlikely to have more than two or three children with diabetes on their list.
Children are volatile in their eating habits and activity levels, so it is unlikely that the blood sugar results will achieve the level of consistency which might be expected in adults with diabetes.
In the event of unconsciousness or convulsions, the appropriate management is with intramuscular glucagon.
Long term complications are not seen in early childhood, but may become evident after puberty. This is by no means a comprehensive guide, so please if you have questions or concerns about gestational diabetes, consult your physician. Gestational diabetes starts when your body is not able to make and use all the insulin it needs for pregnancy.
Because baby’s blood sugar is normal, when yours is uncontrolled, it has adverse effects on your baby.
This is much more likely if your blood sugar levels were high during pregnancy and especially during labor. That’s why almost all pregnant women have a glucose-screening test between 24 and 28 weeks. Your doctor will have you take blood sugar readings with a glucose-meter several times a day, depending on what your test results said.

Even the healthy brands are not as healthy as homemade and they are much more expensive per serving!
For example, a lot of people start with eliminating refined sugar and start making their own healthier sweet treats using natural sweeteners.
I went through a nutrition class a few years ago at our local county extension service & that was so helpful in learning how to menu plan.

So by adding eggs in some form, the meal becomes more satisfying and yes, also increases the protein content, which is great for many reasons.
That’s why, I also serve either a boiled egg or side of turkey bacon or sausage when having oatmeal or rice porridge for breakfast. The family should ask for a further prescription of hypostop or glucagon when they have used their own supply, or when the expiry date is imminent. Although much less common than hypoglycaemia, it is responsible for around 10 times more deaths in young people with diabetes. Screening is organised from the diabetes clinic, and starts at the age of 12 with annual retinal photography, measurement of blood pressure and estimation of urinary microalbumin. Your labor and delivery team will treat baby’s hypoblycemia promptly, by either having you feed baby or in more severe cases, giving baby an iv of glucose solution. Taking time to really think-through this first step will save you a ton of time in the long run – no more racking your brain to try to think of what you should make for the week.
Or plan for it to be a “left-overs night” where you can simply warm-up a meal from a previous evening. Reorganizing your frig and pantry ensures you know what’s on hand, where it’s located and enables you to quickly and more efficiently unload your groceries when you return home from the market.
I also like to precook and freeze ground meat for use in meals like tacos, chili, soups, etc. Simply plan ahead to make a big breakfast (or have breakfast for dinner) and make a double batch of homemade waffles, pancakes or French toast and individually wrap and place in freezer bags the leftovers. You can use either mini-snack-sized baggies, or if you want to be more sustainable, use mini-plastic containers that can be washed and reused.
By going slowly, you’ll also find it much easier to get those picky eaters on board too. There are a couple of reasons why I would add eggs to a breakfast of muffins and smoothies.
With that said, when my boys were little, I found that yogurt, a high protein muffin (such as a muffin made with almond flour or coconut flour) and some fruit was plenty to satisfy them.
So if you were doing a dinner meal plan only, then perhaps only plan 3-4 dinners per week for about 3-4 weeks and then add from there. I also like variety, don’t fancy elaborate cooking weeknights, and want to get more grains and beans into my food regime, while having small portions to help reduce my chunky stomach and hips. I have a post that discuss how to develop a food budget, however, the tips provided are really focused on encouraging individuals and families to create a healthy eating game plan. Many type 2 diabetes patients unknowingly have this condition and consult doctor with symptoms of diabetes complications, such as tingling in the feet (neuropathy) or vision loss (retinopathy). Then, these high-sugar level remains, until the kidney flush out this extra sugar in blood as urine (pee). However, frequent urination leads to depletion of liquid called dehydration leads to shortage in saliva causing dry mouth and throat.
Additionally, kidney flushes out excess sugar and minerals (such as sodium, chloride, potassium, and bicarbonate) from the body meant for energy that gone unutilized. This is because, increase or decrease in blood-sugar level makes the eye lens and (or) corneal tissue to swell or shrink respectively, results in varying vision.
In addition, the immune system does not work efficiently in case of high blood sugar, because of the interactions between various hormones and enzymes. Some with diabetes gain weight because of frequent hunger, continuous dumping of food items and unnecessary fat storage. Dr Farmer and Dr Franklin both take a particular interest in diabetes - but if they are unavailable telephone the consultant on call. Haemoglobin A1c is measured on a capillary blood specimen at clinic, and the results are available for discussion during the consultation. Severe hypoglycaemia (involving unconsciousness or convulsions) is extremely distressing and disruptive to families, and fear of a recurrence will often result in a subsequent deterioration in diabetes control.
If the child is confused and uncooperative during hypoglycaemia, buccal administration of Glucogel (previously known as Hypostop Gel) can be extremely useful. So extra blood glucose goes through the placenta, giving the baby high blood glucose levels. If you fail this first test, your doctor might then order another test where your blood sugar is tested every hour for three hours. If you’re exercising pay close attention to your blood glucose levels as it can cause them to drop too low. Ensuring you actually have left-overs for “left-overs night” is simple when you plan ahead for it – just make extra of a meal that reheats well, and “voila,” leftovers night!

If you don’t have a good propane grill, I recommend that you seriously consider investing in one! Then simply take them right out of your freezer and place into your toaster oven for a quick, yet healthy breakfast. It helps to come up with a plan that you and your hubby agree about and then share the plan with the kids explaining why you and Dad have decided that healthy eating is important.
For example, if you’re making two meals a week and eating out the rest of the time, start by planning those two meals and maybe adding one more day for a total of three planned meals.
One is for the benefit of the extra protein since research studies show that high protein breakfasts better satisfy appetite, and also help to regulate blood insulin levels. You can either reduce the recipe so you don’t have any leftovers, but I recommend having at least one extra serving that can be refrigerated or frozen for a later date.
Sounds like you’re very committed to nourishing your family, which is so wonderful to hear. He is almost 3 and all he will eat willingly is sandwiches and fruit, but anything else, even just placing something on a plate in front of him, he will run crying to his room. I am by no means an expert and I have had my share of picky eaters – be assured that the toddler age is a very common time for picky eating habits to develop.
This lack of glucose absorption, removal of vital minerals and dehydration leads to lack of energy thus diabetic’s feel tired. Others may find their vision turns blur; with respect to how high the blood-sugar level is.
Similarly, diabetics with high blood sugar levels are generally short supply of nutrients to the extremities causing numbness or tingling sensation over the feet.
It should particularly be avoided in children less than 7 years old, who may be more susceptible to long-lasting adverse effects. The patient advice literature includes 'Sick day rules' and guidance on the detection and management of ketonuria,(see Ketonuria flowchart). This causes the baby’s pancreas to make extra insulin to get rid of the blood glucose. Your doctor will probably also have you meet with a nutritionist to discuss your diet changes. If you’re away from home, carry your phone and a carby snack or glucose tablets in case you need them.
And, as you start trying new recipes, remember to add the ones your family like to your Master List of Meals. Here’s a secret for making your own fresh-sliced apple sides for the week ahead: Cut apples and place into individual containers with a dash of pineapple juice, shake well to distribute the juice – they will stay fresh all week. As you get comfortable with meal planning and see it’s benefits, you can increase from there. Of course, you can make a full portion if you want a lot of extra servings to store for future meals that are quick to reheat on busy nights.
For example I need to remember to plan for 3 meals on Saturdays and Sundays, but only two on weekdays, or even just dinner, because I eat out with colleagues at least twice a week. He used to eat everything and was just so in love with food and he has slowly dwindled down to just a few things. If there is, any disturbance to this glucose homeostasis will lead to various bodily symptoms.
This makes the kidney to release of rennin angiotensin this stimulates the hypothalamus to signal thirst. With proper treatment if the blood-sugar level returns to normal, blurred vision (or sometime clear vision) disappears. In the context of the above symptoms, the finding of glycosuria justifies a presumptive diagnosis of diabetes, whereas the absence of glycosuria makes the diagnosis very unlikely. Treatment with oral glucose should be repeated after 10 minutes if the child remains hypoglycaemic. Each family requires a supply of ketostix for diagnosis, and rapid acting insulin for treatment. Since the baby is getting more energy than it needs to grow and develop, the extra energy is stored as fat. This preteen phase is starting to make me think I may need to get a part-time job to feed them. So if I plan on Sunday for the week, I’m already having to figure out shopping for the next Sunday, without giving myself a monster list to fill on any given day on the weekdays. Its just been within the last several years that I have been changing my habits as far as eating and being more organic.. The Lord is so good in helping us to maintain balance when we remember to present all of our concerns and desires to Him and seek His direction (Matthew 6:25-33). There are lots and lots of theories and advice on how to deal with a picky eater, just do a quick google search and you will find a plethora of advice.
Slowly remove one unhealthy food at a time, some you can replace with healthy versions and some will just need to hit the road. If a blood sugar is checked, a random sample is more useful than a fasting one (children have limited glycogen stores, and a child who is hyperglycaemic during the day may have a near-normal blood sugar first thing in the morning). We support the wishes of those families who choose to attend both the GP and the hospital team for diabetes care. Storing this fat leads baby to gain extra weight more quickly than he or she should, which can cause problems during the birthing process, especially if the baby weighs more than 9 pounds. If checking the blood sugar, use a blood sugar meter so that you have an instant result.  An apparently well child can decompensate quickly into ketoacidosis, and a delay in referral of even one day while awaiting laboratory results is unacceptable.
So the best way to feed him is to model healthy eating and only stock your home with choices that are nutritionally sound. I tend to pick up bags of legumes as I need them, and at the end of the week I’m getting lots of produce and some meat.
You want a balance of healthy proteins and fats, organic, pastured animal sources are terrific such as pastured poultry, eggs, beef and wild-caught fish rich in omega 3s.
Other healthy fats come from nutritional powerhouses like coconut oil, olive oil, avocados, nuts, and whole milk dairy products, which if cultured are excellent sources of calcium and probiotics. If u can give me any tips on feeding a 4 and a half year old and kinda what he should be eating that would be greatly appreciated..
If he has no issues with dairy sensitivity, cultured dairy once a day is a great source of good nutrition. And of course the mainstay is to get those organic veggies in there, raw or slightly steamed is best. But we Moms know this can be a challenge with some kiddos ?? I also highly recommend cultured veggies (also referred to as lacto-fermented foods).
They are excellent because they provide the added benefit of gut-healthy probiotics and enzymes.
