About one out of three people with type 2 diabetes takes insulin shots to help manage the disease. Studies show that people with type 2 diabetes who take mealtime insulin prefer to use a pen, not a vial and syringe. About 400 people with type 2 diabetes took part in this study, which compared two ways to take insulin. Group 1: took insulin using a vial and syringe for the first two weeks, and then switched to an insulin pen for the next two weeks. Group 2: took insulin with a pen for the first two weeks, and then switched to a vial and syringe for the next two weeks. The experts shared that people with diabetes need to work closely with healthcare providers they trust. Insulin pens can be an easier and less painful option. Talk to your healthcare provider about your fears and ask about the pen. We’ll be devoting a whole issue of Sweet Life magazine to pregnancy and diabetes next year, but for now here’s a taste of Sweet Life editor Bridget McNulty’s experience with Type 1 diabetes and pregnancy… Published in The Daily News newspaper last week. The content of this site is intended as information and is not a substitute for seeking advice from a medical professional. When planning your meal, always keep in mind the total amount of carbohydrates eaten – this is more important than where the carbohydrates come from. The first blood glucose test strip was invented in 1965 by a group of Ames researchers under Ernie Adams. Diabetes research has revolutionized so quickly that it is impossible to tell what could be next. Keeping tabs on children of any age can be a challenge, but keeping tabs on a child living with diabetes adds on to that challenge. The trick is to make carb counting for lunchboxes and snacks easy, so that it becomes a simple routine rather than a complicated chore.
Luckily, there are some easy techniques to use for counting carbs, and these can be really useful for busy Moms and Dads.
Another technique is to allocate average carbohydrate counts to common foods like bread and apples. For children on insulin, this methodology makes it easy for parents to calculate the insulin-to-carbohydrate ratio that determines the amount of insulin they need to take before each meal, making allowances for variables like levels of activity and individual responses to certain foods.

With over 6.5 million South Africans living with diabetes, and with approximately 45% of all new cases of Type 2 diabetes being diagnosed in children, as stated by the IDF the Diabetes Atlas and the American Diabetes Association, easy-to-use, time-saving methods like these can be invaluable to parents. The other side of the coin, of course, is to make lunches and snacks interesting by varying the contents from day to day, and by focusing on foods that kids enjoy. Your heart, blood vessels, eyes and kidneys are at risk if you do not care for your diabetes well. Many healthcare providers also suggest that people try an insulin pen when they are just beginning to use insulin. This study also showed that fasting blood glucose and other health data were almost the same for those who took insulin with a pen and those who used a syringe.
Many people with type 2 diabetes don’t want to take insulin because they are afraid of needles. It is a common myth that diabetics shouldn’t eat certain foods because they are “too sweet.” Managing diabetes takes a lot of organization, will power and time.
However, since around the 1970s, blood glucose testing has been the best way to manage your diabetes levels. This was invented by Boehringer Mannheim in 1982 and was the first of the Accu-Chek series. Glucostix possessed additional features, such as push-button programming for preset calibration.
However, there were many more handheld blood glucose meters that were introduced to the diabetes market during the 1990s and 2000s.
With exciting inventions like the Google Diabetes Contact Lenses or the Bionic Pancreas, there is no end to what can be accomplished in the field of diabetes! One of the top priorities for parents of children with diabetes is to manage the condition from an early age, so that their children can lead normal, healthy lives. But counting carbs, as anyone who’s been on a carbohydrate-restricted diet will know, can be difficult – and frustrating. The term means that foods with a standardised carb count are interchangeable, and that the total carb content of a lunchbox can be quickly calculated in this way.

If you can’t control your blood glucose with increased movement, good food choices and pills, you may need to inject insulin.
Even when they know how much they need this medicine, they will sometimes skip it because they dislike taking shots.
If you don’t take your insulin and you don’t tell anyone why, you can put your health at risk.
If the fruit has less sugar you can eat a larger portion to get to the 15 grams of carbohydrates. The Greek physician Aretaeus (130–200 CE) noted a disease with symptoms of constant thirst, excessive urination and loss of weight, and named the condition “diabetes”, meaning “flowing through”. This test strip required smaller amounts of blood and could be read visually with much more stable color. Instead of reading the color of a test strip, a person would draw their blood and insert it in the device (the same way it is done today). The treatment regime includes making sure they have a healthy diet based on foods with a low GI (Glycaemic Index); foods that digest slowly and therefore don’t play havoc with the body’s blood glucose levels. And who has time in the mornings to figure out whether the lunchbox they’re preparing is ‘carb-safe’ for their child?
According to the ADA, 3 to 4 servings of carbohydrates per meal is about right for many people. For example, the amount of blood required to test was 50-100 microliters of blood (10 times the amount that is needed for most modern test strips).
This can be enough of a challenge at home, but what about the times when children are out of the home – at school, parties or sports events?
Keep in my mind that the 3 to 4 servings needs to cover all carbohydrate consumption, including rice and bread, that you eat in your meal.
