If diagnosed early enough to be surgically removed before it metastasizes the survival rate for lung cancer can approach 80%.   But fewer than 5% of patients with lung cancer are diagnosed at this early stage.
The test is only recommended for patients who are currently asymptomatic and who are not receiving annual CT screening for lung cancer.
If you are not currently screening your high risk patients with annual CT’s, your odds of finding a patient with early stage lung cancer are very low.  By using PAULA’s Test, you can improve those odds and select those patients at the highest risk . In a paper published in the latest issue of the Journal of Thoracic Oncology, researchers underline a baffling connection between lung cancer survival rates and diabetes. In the new study, Norwegian investigators looked at how long lung cancer patients survived after diagnostic.
This discovery hints at a cellular or genetic mechanism that may be highly activated or inactivated in diabetes, therefore stifling the development of lung cancer.
The team also added that more studies need to be conducted into the nature of the correlation they discovered.
The study was led by experts from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and the Trondheim University.
Participants in the pemetrexed gemcitabine (PEG) study and the Norwegian Lung Cancer Biobank study were also included in the work. Two years after the study began, 19 percent of those with both conditions survived, as opposed to only 11 percent of those diagnosed exclusively with cancer.

Prostate cancer develops in a man's prostate, the walnut-sized gland just below the bladder that produces some of the fluid in semen.
The prostate can grow larger as men age, sometimes pressing on the bladder or urethra and causing symptoms similar to prostate cancer. Diet seems to play a role in the development of prostate cancer, which is much more common in countries where meat and high-fat dairy are mainstays. Here are some things that will not cause prostate cancer: Too much sex, a vasectomy, and masturbation. Screening tests are available to find prostate cancer early, but government guidelines don't call for routine testing in men at any age. Staging is used to describe how far prostate cancer has spread (metastasized) and to help determine the best treatment.
Stage III: Cancer has spread to the outer part of the prostate and nearby seminal vesicles. Stage IV: Cancer has spread to lymph nodes, nearby organs or tissues such as bladder or rectum, or distant organs such as bones or lungs.
A cancer-conscious diet may be the best choice for survivors who want to bolster their health and those hoping to lower their risk. Foods high in folate may have some action against prostate cancer (spinach, orange juice, lentils).

Patients with recurrent lung cancer have better post-surgery survival rates if their management includes a follow-up programme based on computer tomography (CT) of the chest, according to new findings.
The findings, presented at the ERS International Congress 2015 in Amsterdam today (27 September, 2015), is the first to show improved overall survival after surgery for a CT- based follow-up programme and could change the way patients are currently managed. Previous research has confirmed that after the introduction of the CT-based follow-up, most cases of recurrent lung cancer can be detected before the patient has any symptoms. Researchers from the Odense University Hospital in Denmark assessed 391 patients who had surgery following a lung cancer diagnosis between 2008 and 2013. Results showed that the number of patients alive four years after surgery increased from 54% to an estimated 68%. The authors plan to repeat the same kind of analysis for the group of lung cancer patients treated by radiation with the aim to cure, instead of by surgery, to see if the results are also successful for this group of patients. A simple and cheap breath test could soon help detect the first signs of lung cancer.Scientists have found a way of testing breath to accurately distinguish between benign lung disease and early stage cancer.
He said: a€?This breath analysis method presents the potential for a cheaper and more reliable diagnostic option for patients found to have bulky disease on a CT scan.
Investigators used silicon microchips to collect breath samples from 88 healthy people, 107 patients with lung cancer, 40 individuals with benign pulmonary disease, and seven with metastatic lung cancer.Previous research found four specific substances, known as carbonyl compounds, in breath samples as a€?elevated cancer markersa€™ - ECMs - that distinguish patients with lung cancer from those with benign disease. The views expressed in the contents above are those of our users and do not necessarily reflect the views of MailOnline. In spite of this broad acceptance of the benefits of screening, compliance with the new guidelines is very low. Using PAULA’s test in conjunction with CT, physicians can improve the effectiveness of CT and make early detection of lung cancer a realistic proposition. It would appear that people who were also diagnosed with the latter live longer than lung cancer patients without diabetes. They learned that those who also had diabetes were somehow protected, while their lives were extended in a statistically significant manner from their peers'. If such a mechanism exists, then finding and analyzing it could lead to the development of innovative drugs against this prevalent cancer.
The magazine is the official publication of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC). The survival benefit may be of clinical importance and should be focused on in future studies,” the researchers write. Together, they surveyed the 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival rates of lung cancer patients from the Nord-Trøndelag Health study (HUNT). About 43 percent of those who also had diabetes survived after a year, as opposed to 28 percent of those without the second condition. Three years later, some 3 percent of those in the first group survived, as opposed to only 1 percent of those in the second group.

After 70, studies suggest that most men have some form of prostate cancer, though there may be no outward symptoms. If you have an enlarged prostate (BPH), that does not mean you are at greater risk of developing prostate cancer. The tests may find cancers that are so slow-growing that medical treatments would offer no benefit.
This includes African-Americans and those with a father, brother, or son diagnosed before age 65. This allows for earlier diagnosis and leads to an improved chance of having a radical treatment against the relapse.
After the introduction of a CT- based follow-up in July 2010 all patients receives a scan every third month for two years and then every 6 months for three years. Additionally, for patients experiencing a relapse during the first 24 months after surgery, the chance of being alive four years after the first treatment increased from 2% to an estimated 27%. A key strength of our study is the real-life setting we used, where we were able to demonstrate successful results in a representative sample of lung cancer patients from Denmark. The investigators found that the sensitivity and specificity of breath analysis depended upon how many of the ECMs had increased. For example, having three or four ECMs was diagnostic of lung cancer in 95 per cent of those with this result.
It does not test for predisposition for lung cancer, it tests for the possible presence of lung cancer at the time of testing. Heavy smokers and former smokers have an up to 1 in 7 lifetime risk of developing lung cancer. The main implication the new study has is that diabetes should not prevent doctors from applying standard cancer medication. Family history increases a man's risk: having a father or brother with prostate cancer doubles the risk. Researchers are still studying whether alcohol use, STDs, or prostatitis play a role in the development of prostate cancer.
Overall, the 5-year relative survival rate is 100% for men with disease confined to the prostate or nearby tissues, and many men live much longer.
In May 2015, researchers recorded whether the patients were alive and free from lung cancer. When used in high risk, asymptomatic patients, our Protein Assay Utilizing Lung cancer Analytes (PAULA’s Test) can help you measure a patient’s risk of having undiagnosed lung cancer.
African-Americans are at high risk and have the highest rate of prostate cancer in the world. This inflammation or infection may also cause a fever and in many cases is treated with medicine.
