The Red Cross symbol used by the International Committee of the Red Cross, a red cross on white background, was based on the Swiss flag by reversing of the colors of that flag, in order to honor its inventor and co-founder, the Swiss Henry Dunant and Switzerland, where the first Geneva Convention was held in 1864. The idea of establishing the Red Cross belongs to Swiss businessman Henry Dunant, who was shocked to discover in 1859 that thousands of wounded soldiers on both sides after the battle of Solferino were left to die alone and without medical care on the battlefield. From 1864 to 1949 four Geneva Conventions were signed specifying the status of medical services and of the wounded on the battlefield, covering all activities of the Red Cross, both in time of war and in time of peace. The mandate of the International Committee of the Red Cross is to protect the life and dignity of people and to provide assistance to the victims of war and civil strife all over the world, while the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has as its mandate the improvement of the life of vulnerable people worldwide by mobilizing the power of humanity. Agreed upon 51 years ago in Vienna, the seven Fundamental Principles are what make the Red Cross movement unique, effective and global. Visit the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies  to discover many resources, games and videos. For younger children here there is the cartoon explaining the principles very clearly (my kids loved it!): Cartoon -Red Cross 7 Principles.
To show the kids some basic first aid, I have created little cartoons about cuts, bruises and burns. This month we are learning all about Switzerland, so link up below any old or new posts designed to teach kids about Switzerland–crafts, books, lessons, recipes, music and more! I am a working mother of two, living in Luxembourg in a little nest that often gets scrambled by life!
Join me in this ride full of ups and downs, you will find lots of ideas for crafting and cooking with kids. I’d also like to point out that in Israel they have the Magen David Adom, the Red Star of David. Have you got your USI? From 1 January 2015 all students will need a Unique Student Identifier (USI) to obtain their certificate or qualification from their registered training organisation.
The global Red Cross has delivered a major aid shipment into Ecuador following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred April 16, 2016.
Sorry, we didn't recognize the zip code you entered. It may have been mistyped, or you may have put in a zip code outside the area the American Red Cross serves in the US, its territories and military installations around the world.

But I think that one of the biggest contributions to the world given by this country is the creation of the Red Cross movement in 1863. That’s why I love the idea of explaining to my children the principles and the work of this amazing organization.
First I explained to them that there is the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) as “head” of the movement based in Geneva and then the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) that unites all National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in 190 countries. Later the emblem of the Red Crescent was adopted and, since 2005, a third one, that of the Red Crystal. His proposal for setting up national relief teams of trained volunteers to provide assistance to all in need in time of war became accepted, and in 1863 a committee was established in Geneva, which in the next year led to the establishment of the International Committee of the Red Cross. Since then the Red Cross has developed into the largest humanitarian organization in the world, providing assistance to millions of people all over the world through its two basic international organizations and 190 national societies. The first four fundamental principles – humanity, impartiality, neutrality and independence – guide its work and the work of many humanitarian organizations. Each month we will feature a country and host a link party to collect posts about teaching kids about that country–crafts, books, lessons, recipes, etc. If a USI is not provided, training providers cannot issue a certificate or qualification for training completed. It is the first large delivery of aid since the disaster struck, bringing nearly 60 tons of aid into the country. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.
But for the Red Cross they are indivisible from the other three principles: voluntary service, unity and universality. Getting aid into the country has proved challenging, with continuing aftershocks, severe infrastructure damage and limited access to the most affected communities in remote and mountainous areas all hampering relief efforts. In addition to aid supplies, the shipment includes three satellite phones which will improve communications on the ground, providing a reliable means to get information from remote areas to disaster managers at the Ecuadorian Red Cross. The Ecuadorian Red Cross immediately responded, activating 800 volunteers to provide first aid and search and rescue for survivors.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) pulled from pre-positioned disaster relief stock in Ecuador and is providing support to the Ecuador Red Cross through its Americas regional network. While search and rescue efforts are mostly finished at this point, the Ecuadorian Red Cross continues to provide first aid, food, water, and comfort.
The Ecuador earthquake occurred just days after two deadly quakes struck Japana€™s Kyushu region.Initial reports show the quake left more than 500 dead and approximately 4,000 more injured. Damage to infrastructure, homes and roads has been extensive and more than 100 aftershocks have occurred in the area. The Ecuadoran Government declared a state of emergency.Because of the many remote mountain villages in the area and downed communication systems, a full assessment of damage and loss is still ongoing. A team of disaster specialistsa€”including an American Red Cross assessment specialista€”has been deployed to support the Ecuadorian Red Cross response. The American Red Cross has also activated its Restoring Family Links services and is providing information management support and assistance at the 24-hour emergency center. It is expected the number of deaths and damage will increase as more information is gathered. The people of Japan are also reeling from the disaster there when twin earthquakes occurred within hours, killing more than 40 people and injuring thousands more.
The Japanese Red Cross immediately responded, dispatching 12 medical teams to help the injured. Additional volunteers are distributing blankets, sleeping mats, tarps, pillows, and hygiene kits to people in sheltersa€”as well as other support as needed. The American Red Cross has a long-standing partnership with the Ecuadorian Red Cross and has been working in the country for years, helping kids and communities prepare for earthquake. Our hearts go out to the people of Ecuador and Japan and we will continue to monitor the situation in the coming days.
