But sometimes the adrenal glands go haywire, overproducing the stress hormone cortisol (Cushing’s disease) or not producing enough hormones (Addison’s disease or adrenal insufficiency), says Frederick Singer, MD, director of the endocrinology and bone disease program at the John Wayne Cancer Institute at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California.
According to David Borenstein, MD, an integrative medicine physician in New York City, when you have adrenal fatigue, you feel run down. Because some of the symptoms of hypothyroidism are similar to adrenal fatigue, the two conditions can be confused, Borenstein says. However, if you take synthetic hormones for hypothyroidism and still experience fatigue and other symptoms, it’s important to determine the cause, Singer says. If Borenstein suspects adrenal fatigue, his first recommendation is to practice relaxation techniques like meditation and deep breathing. If making these types of lifestyle changes don’t help improve your symptoms, you can take supplements to build your adrenal glands back up, Borenstein says.
However, many endocrinologists warn that taking adrenal hormone supplements when you don’t need them is dangerous.
Before taking any supplements, be sure to talk to your doctor and undergo any testing to rule out other possible causes of your symptoms. Iodine is an essential nutrient that is needed for the production of the body's thyroid hormones and is therefore required for normal thyroid function. In working with thyroid and adrenal problems, I have come to appreciate a most interesting and significant observation. The general exception to this pattern is in cases where the symptom is due to general low metabolic energy regardless of whether it is caused by thyroid or adrenal dysfunction.
Like many people with untreated hypothyroidism, my symptoms included weight gain, high cholesterol (at a young age), mild depression, blood pressure issues, being tired and cold much of the time, in a brain fog, hair loss, dry skin, low energy, low sex drive, and so much more. 40% of all Americans suffer from hypothyroidism yet only about 10% of the patients tested will be diagnosed.
From early childhood through much of my adult life I had been overweight and simply could not lose weight no matter what I did. But I have this amazing sister who has tons of energy, could eat twice as much as me, easily run three miles every day, and stay slim without almost no effort. After pregnancy I was diagnosed with a lump (goiter) on my thyroid which is considered by many doctors as a sign of Hypothyroidism.

Feeling sure I had undiagnosed Hypothyroidism and Adrenal Fatigue, along with the information & symptoms to support my theory, I went to see an Endocrinologist.
Hi Lizzy… I have hit my lowest point and am extremely frustrated, discouraged, and now becoming extremely unmotivated because I am getting nowhere.
My StoryFor over 25 years I lived with a commonly misdiagnosed condition called Hypothyroidism. The content is subject to Everyday Health’s editorial standards for accuracy, objectivity, and balance. According to the Society for Endocrinology, the adrenal glands secrete hormones, or chemical messengers, into your bloodstream, where they travel to various parts of your body to do their work. They say adrenal fatigue is when you’re under a great deal of stress and, as a result, your adrenal glands just can’t keep up with your body’s demands for hormones.
According to the Endocrine Society, adrenal fatigue is a myth promoted by health books and alternative medicine websites.
Extreme fatigue can be a symptom of many health other conditions, such as depression, that are identifiable and treatable, he says. However, if your traditional doctor believes your synthetic thyroid hormone should be making you feel better and it’s not, you can schedule an appointment with a doctor that practices alternative or integrative medicine if you’re interested in learning more about adrenal fatigue. He also recommends cutting back on high-fructose corn syrup, gluten, and stimulants (such as caffeine) and to get good sleep. View all. The diagnosis for many of these symptoms is low metabolic energy, the cause in many cases is either adrenal fatigue or low thyroid function. For example, both poor thyroid and poor adrenal function can cause hair loss or poor mental memory and focus. Light skin individuals have a tendency toward weaker adrenals and dark skin individuals have a tendency toward weaker thyroids while olive skin individuals tend not to have weak adrenals or thyroids.
This will tell you if our condition is predominately low function of thyroid, adrenals, or a mixture of both. As your adrenals and thyroid receive the needed support, use this tool to periodically monitor your progress. Doctors had always dismissed it, even though it is one of the most significant symptoms of hypothyroidism.
With my doctor’s help and experimentation, we were able to treat my hypothyroidism and adrenal fatigue. I run marathons and the past year, my health has declined little by little and I have yet (after MANY doctors and tests) been able to have a clear diagnosis, but am always just treated for my symptoms.
You must rely on stimulants like caffeine to get you through the day, and you may also have headaches and find yourself craving salt and sugar.

The two glands work together to supply essential hormones and deliver them where they need to be throughout the body. The glands could become unable to make the hormones you need when you’re under physical stress, he says, and you could be in danger of going into adrenal crisis, a life-threatening condition.

Recently, I went to a nutritionist who ran a different panel of blood work and said my thyroid and adrenals are out of wack. Many doctors will prescribe synthetic medicine like Synthroid and Levothyroxine, which for many people only does part of the job. I am now at my last straw trying to goto a naturopathic doctor to hopefully put an end to all of this that is draining me more and more every day. When your adrenal glands aren’t producing enough cortisol and you have a thyroid problem, it can make the situation much worse, Borenstein says. The adrenals help us manage stress and maintain stability, while the thyroid turns on energy product. When I was diagnosed I was 195lbs and everyone told me that being on the meds would help me lose weight, seeing as it’s always been SOOOOO hard for me to lose weight, but Ive gained 25 lbs. However, your story is much like mine and not many people are out there that I could ask questions or just talk to about this all.
Later, after treatment, I learned exercise caused adrenal crashes due to cortisol (adrenal) problems. I can manage my weight easily (heck yea!), easily run three miles (ahem…if I want to), work all day, have energy to cook dinner, do the dishes, read to my son, do laundry, and more. It’s available through the regular pharmacy, and usually costs less than the synthetics. I still have VERY bad anxiety and mild depression, so the doc put me on a different prescription for that.
Just don’t know if I should still feel like this and not be able to lose weight very well.
I’ve started kicking butt in the gym and have lost 7 lbs so far, but I still feel like it should come easier. After a month of using this, he started me on bioidentical t3 and t4 but it made me feel tired, depressed and achy.
