Tinnitus musical ear syndrome, tinnitus from depression - .

One thing that has always intrigued me about my experience of being deaf is the question of my ‘musical tinnitus’. My introduction to Michael Jackson completely changed my relationship with the sounds in my ears.
Mostly, though, tinnitus is an old friend, a musical orchestra, something that entertains me – reminding me of how much I love music. You might like to know that the latest research results of a project designed to pin down the cause of tinnitus show that it is caused by overstimulation of a particular area of the brain.
Sometimes I can hear a fainter different tune playing in the other ear & it often moves from one ear to the other without me noticing if I am distracted, i dread that one day both ears might be as loud at the same time. I find also when stressed or anxious the Tinnitus gets louder and louder as if it is somehow regulated by the heart and emotions…. The tune which pops into your head and won’t go away is maddening enough — but imagine if the music in your head sounded as real as if the musicians were sitting beside you. Usually, in musical hallucinations, people hear carols and hymns, says Dr Richard McCollum, a psychiatrist at Devon Partnership NHS Trust, who recently ran an online study involving more than 500 sufferers.
Hearing loss that triggers musical hallucinations can be moderate or severe, according to Professor Griffiths’s research.
I didn’t understand the whole thing at the time, and thought it was just like a relaxation session or something, but I think what actually happened was that he tried to ‘cure’ my tinnitus by holding his hands over my ears. I would absorb and learn his music and I found that when I wasn’t listening to his music, I could ‘tune’ the noises in my ears to sound like something resembling, for example, Billie Jean or even Thriller. She is passionate about access to the world for deaf people and is clinging to the hope of peace, love and music.

In my opinion earworms are not tinnitus; songs move forwards in a predictable way whereas tinnitus just does its own annoying and unpredictable thing. By turning it into a piece of music it seems to become quieter and will even eventually die down like the fading notes of a song.
Even worse, if the music was discordant, unrecognisable as a tune.‘It’s as if the choir is in the room with you and you have no means of making them stop,’ says Tina Lannin, a 42-year-old from London who suffered from this for nearly 30 years. The tinnitus would amplify my fear and I would listen to the pitch get louder and louder until I couldn’t bear it any longer and would leave the darkness of my room to the warm yellow light of the sitting room and my parents. As Professor Nigel Osborne says in the film – deaf people engage with music with all their senses, and everyone, hearing and deaf, has a different way of listening.
It was thought for a long time that the noise was produced somewhere in the ear but it has now been shown that it is within the brain.
In fact, their brain activity during these hallucinations is very similar to people who are listening to actual music. Others had suffered very gradual age-related loss of hearing, although those with the most severe hearing loss seem more likely to develop musical hallucinations.Tina was born prematurely, and her hearing was profoundly damaged by the noise of the incubator where she spent her first three months. Some quite surprising facts about tinnitis are emerging from research and it’s all helpful. By the age of ten she developed tinnitus.‘Sometimes I would hear buzzing and banging, but frequently it was musical,’ says Tina, who is now a professional lip-reader. My damage limitation is either to ignore it, listen to something – music, TV – or, yes, tune it. Also nice to know that other people have musical tinnitus – or have the tuning thing too!

I heard Christmas music during the season and I hear both contemporary artists as well as classical and country and western. In a musical hallucination, there is also persistent activity, but this takes place within the brain, rather than being triggered by external sound.
Another difference lies in the way they are perceived.‘People with musical hallucinations initially think what they hear is real. But while tinnitus is usually a buzzing, ringing or whistling sound in the ear, without any obvious source, in some people it takes the form of phantom music. A German study of 11 stroke patients who developed musical hallucinations showed damage to the part of the brain involved in processing sound. Some people with epilepsy can suffer musical ear syndrome, too, just before an attack (just as perceptions, such as sense of taste, smell or hearing can change). I love some sounds likke rain and thunderstorms, the sound of horses galloping or trotting and, of course most music-excepting the screaming of some groups. Brain tumours may also trigger musical hallucinations.Tina’s hallucinations became increasingly difficult to live with.
It bypasses the damaged sections of the ear and directly stimulates the auditory nerves (a standard hearing aid amplifies sound). The effect was profound — not only on Tina’s ability to hear but also for her musical hallucinations. I sometimes get a bit of buzzing or banging tinnitus, but it is at a much lower noise level.‘I’ve always loved music, and still do.
