My Doctor actually said i had adrenal fatigue, as I had been on prednisone for 5 years, and just recently after a very long taper (withdrawal) even then i had some not so nice withdrawal symptoms, and have been told it will take my body awhile to heal, although I have noticed since making healthy diet changes that I feel better, and can really tell when I don’t follow them, and even after getting off of them chronically there are still times that I have had to go on a burst for 5-7 days, I have severe, RAD. I don’t think that adrenal fatigue or adrenal insufficiency is the root cause of anything, to be honest. Sadly, people often use the quote you are presenting and then don’t include the fact that adequate adrenal coricosteroids are required to utilize thyroid hormone.
Whether we want to call it adrenal fatigue or not doesnt matter to a person who is completely exhausted and then overstimulated when they try to help themselves with thyroid and a pro thyroid diet. Yeah, getting rid of some things in the diet can lead to a lack of proper nutrition, which in turn can be a contributor to adrenal problems, if not the entire reason, but a lot of things can cause malnutrition, not just purposeful dieting, and lots of things cause stress.

The mainstream medical world does not recognise the term adrenal fatigue because it is not a disease as such but rather a collection of sign and symptoms, but I can assure you these symptoms are very real, and anyone going through adrenal fatigue can tell you this. There are many stages of adrenal fatigue and the severity of your symptoms will determine what type of treatment is best for you and how long it can take to recover from. Disclaimer: I am not a medical doctor on this topic of adrenal fatigue or adrenal exhaustion, I am however coming from the position of my own personal experience with this and the largely unaccepted medical community explanation for the myriad of symptoms I was experiencing.
The symptoms of adrenal fatigue are vast, which is one of the reasons it can be difficult to identify. Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome has four stages the body goes through as it continues into dysregulation and eventually reaching exhaustion. Alarm reaction or Early Fatigue stage occurs in response to more stress and increases its activity to counteract the stressors.
In the Resistance Response stage, the body is now under chronic stress and the adrenals begin to be taxed, no longer able to keep up the output of cortisol needed to bring the body back into balance.
Stage 3 or Adrenal Fatigue, begins when our body can no longer produce enough cortisol to bring our bodies back into a state of balance.
Then we enter the final stage, adrenal failure, which is a critical stage that can cause severe impairment and even be fatal.
I had all the symptoms and signs of adrenal fatigue when this started, and after changing my diet completely (not to a low carb, just one that omitted processed foods and my allergies) I continued to suffer from adrenal issues, thyroid issues, depression, and insomnia for years. This causes the pituitary gland to release more ACTH into the blood stream to stimulate the adrenal glands to produce more cortisol to assist the body in dealing with the stressor. Even though the release of ACTH remains high, the adrenals begin to slow down the output of cortisol as they begin the path to exhaustion.
Cortisol and DHEA levels are the best markers for identifying a sub-functional system (sub functional means you are not in the extremes of the condition, but still have symptoms even though levels may show normal range).
Some adaptogens may prove helpful including ashwaganda, Echinacea, astragalus, and ginseng in improving adrenal function.


Usually the more severe the adrenal dysfunction, the longer the adrenal stress has been going on.
Adrenal fatigue is a relatively new concept and as a disorder is not commonly recognized by mainstream healthcare. During this stage there may not be many noticeable symptoms with the exception of a little more tiredness than normal.
Some of the symptoms at this point mirror Addison’s disease, which is adrenal insufficiency, “Fatigue becomes extreme, with weight loss, muscle weakness, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, hypoglycemia, headache, sweating, irregular menstrual cycles, depression, orthostatic hypotension, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalances. This hormone is released into the blood stream and makes its way to the adrenal glands where it stimulates the cortex hormones to be released including cortisol.
As we are no longer able to release enough cortisol it will also be more difficult for our body to signal the release of glucose for energy which further exacerbates our fatigue and lack of get up and go.
The medulla is linked to our fight or flight system or the sympathetic nervous system and releases the adrenaline hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine.
Common symptoms at this stage include, “Anxiety starts to set in, and the person becomes easily irritable. Infections can become recurrent, and PMS and menstrual irregularities surface, symptoms suggestive of hypothyroidism (such as a sensation of feeling cold along with a sluggish metabolism) become prevalent.” (5).
