Medical conditions that cause breathing difficulty, pain, or limited mobility may be especially relevant in patients with insomnia complaints. Specific classification systems include International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Edition (ICD-9)68 and ICD-10,69 the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV),4 and the International Classification of Sleep Disorders, revised (ICSD-2).3 In general, the ICD has the broadest, least well-described categories, DSM-IV has somewhat more specific categories, and ICSD has the most specific categories.
While these factors are believed to be important in clinical settings, the exact magnitude of each class of risks for insomnia is difficult to estimate in the general population.

Symptoms of snoring, breathing pauses, awakening with choking or gasping sensations, and daytime sleepiness should all suggest the possibility of sleep apnea.
