Please join us for an information evening to hear our guest presenter Dr Steve Fryman from Leopold Medical Centre, discussing chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. Battling fibromyalgia—the pain, fatigue, low moods, weight gain, insomnia—can be a real test of one’s willpower. It’s hard for me to imagine doing all the things Jan must do each day just to get her kids dressed, fed, and off to school.
Thank you, Jan, and to all of you who do what it takes to be the best parent, friend, worker, citizen, and fibromyalgia conqueror you can be.
In my first blog on this topic, I discussed how I had been diagnosed with these strange illnesses and how massage helped many of the problems. First, I started by finding out what may be the cause of aches, pains, and general feelings of discomfort.
Being a Florida girl, I grew up on the beach and the times when I did not get enough sunlight I noticed a difference in the way I felt. Eventually, I decided to move to a more tropical area that wasn’t laden with trees and grass, which was a huge help on the environmental allergies. Another highly controversial syndrome among the field of medicine, fibromyalgia was my next diagnosis.
Today I still have the same muscle aches and joint popping and cracking without any explanation for it whatsoever.

It is natural for people to feel tired and drained but fatigue that is prolonged and brings with it symptoms like persistent headaches, joint pains, forgetfulness and insomnia should give anyone a reason to worry. To understand the differences between chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia we should look at the symptoms that manifest in each. There are over 3 million people in the United States of America who suffer from Fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome. Chronic fatigue syndrome is a hard condition to treat and many sufferers often have to contend with a lot of medical tests and theories about what it is they have. Both Chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia are not life threatening and can generally be treated.
TweetAn Inside Look on Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue SyndromeBoth fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome are illnesses that are mostly characterized by tremendous exhaustion.
I have energy, and can make it through the day without going back to bed, whereas before, I could only be up for a short time before lying down again. I began visiting health food stores and talking with others just like me who made some suggestions. Apparently, the powder is supposed to balance the acidity in the body and make it more alkaline. I was given various allergy medications, such as Claritin D, which helped relieve stuffiness and post nasal drip, but did not fix my issues with the aches.
There were certain times when I would go for days without going out into the sun for at least 20 minutes, and I noticed if I did not go out at least every other day, by the third day I started feeling ill again. Cutting milk out of my diet helped with phlegm and digestion issues, but I had a habit of eating bagels and cream cheese for breakfast or donuts because it was easy to make and I had a 45-minute drive to work every day. I went back to an allergist and discovered through more tests that I now had an egg allergy. After visiting the doctor and coming back with normal blood work results, I was relieved that nothing “bad” showed up, but at the same time I was also disappointed that there was no explanation for my symptoms. I was a full-time college student and single mom, and I regularly worked out at either the school’s gym or at home. The only problem that I found was that even though the known “pressure points” of fibromyalgia were supposed to be painful to touch on the person, for me it brought relief. I have found ways that relieve these issues, however, and I have noticed what makes them worse. Besides, I didn’t think it would help us if we said something to him and then went to someone in charge – he’d know for sure who turned him in.
Whenever I have a major stressful event (good or bad, stress is still stress) and finally rest, my body decides to have a mind of its own.

Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome are dilapidating conditions characterized by persistent muscle and joint pain; sleep abnormal digestion, insomnia and general soreness and tiredness of both mind and body.
Chronic fatigue patients often experience an overall tiredness of the body and the mind; they exhibit flu like symptoms such as headaches fever and swollen glands that persist for a long time despite treatment with antibiotics and the usual medication. The medical fraternity cannot seem to agree on whether the condition itself is a physical one or a psychological one and so treatment varies between the two.
In truth, what is being treated most of the time are the symptoms as there is no one cure for the host of symptoms that lie within the umbrella that defines one condition as being a syndrome. For about seven years, I had not been feeling well and had gone to numerous doctors trying to get some answers to my health ailments.
In January of 2012, because my rheumatologist couldn’t find anything wrong, she diagnosed me with fibromyalgia. One of them happened to mention the link between the pH in the body and the growth of disease. Without knowing how to fully describe it, I would say heavy, like a wet rag, and slightly achy – whatever it was wasn’t normal. My diet consisted of that of the average working American, and we all know what that means.
The doctor I was seeing at the time diagnosed me with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, a disorder that I hadn’t ever heard until then and knew nothing about. He shot me up with some sort of steroid, and I found immediate relief with the swelling issues. When I learned she accepted my insurance and to find out more about it, I immediately contacted my insurance company and was told that massage is covered if written by a physician as a prescription. We didn’t realize until we saw multiple vehicles in and out of the place that this “hobby” has become a 5 to 7 day-a-week ordeal, starting around 7am and ending at dinnertime.
So I told our property manager what was going on, and when I showed her the video, she couldn’t believe it.
It’s easy to understand why someone with fi bro could become discouraged, bitter, and hopeless. But despite working full-time, raising three kids alone, and battling periodic fibromyalgia fl are-ups, Jan rarely complains. I still have to be faithful to eat properly and stay on my vitamins and most importantly, stay rested. The name of what I take is called Green Superfood, and it’s made by a company called Amazing Grass, runs for about $28 in the health food store for a 30-serving supply.
In 2007, I had another series of tests and found out I was still allergic to all of the prior tested things, in addition to cedar and (of all things!) corn! It was disappointing, to say the least, but cutting eggs out of my diet really has made a difference with the digestive issues and muscle aches I’d been having. He suggested that I probably had allergies and suggested that I quit smoking (yes, I used to have that nasty habit!). By then, the internet was becoming popular and it was easy for me to find information on the topic.
My body was still adjusting to the birth of my daughter and my diet consisted of mostly microwavable foods – many with starches and sugars that I now know contributed to many of the health-related problems I was facing.
In some diagnoses, Chronic Fatigue syndrome is thought to be a result of some life altering trauma or chronic depression. Because a lot of doctors acknowledge that if the cause was not psychological, the patient will likely be affected psychologically in the long run and ant-depression and anti-anxiety medication might be prescribed along with psychotherapy.
While fibro can take away so many things—good health, your social life, your ability to work, your marriage relationship, and more—it can’t take away your greatest asset: your will to thrive. I went to many different doctors and had multiple blood tests done, all of which I was told were normal. I immediately went to my doctor (who had been trying to put me on pills that I refused to take) and told him of the great news about massage therapy with my insurance company. Grinding, sanding, cutting metal, and whatever else auto body people do is all we hear all day. I hadn’t recalled the last time I felt this way until I went back to my blog entries and saw it was about a year ago. In some cases these two syndromes are linked to Lyme disease and other diseases that affect the immune system.

And anyone with school-aged children knows that the work doesn't end when the children go to school.
I am a strong believer in God and the power of prayer, and so I asked the Lord to please direct me to the right doctor who could help me. I drink that if I tend to be consuming too much acidic food or drink and have noticed a huge difference in the aches.
That meant no more fast food, and it also meant that most things packaged in a box, can, or bag were also off the list. But the unexplained snapping and popping continued with each and every joint in my body, along with flu-like muscle aches and hasn’t stopped since 1997. The sanding dust is caked against my walls and window ledges to the point that it has stained the paint.
I feel like I’m coming down with something, but with fibromyalgia it can be difficult to tell one way or the other. As far as causes are concerned there is very little that one can deduce about the difference between chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia.
The kitchen must be cleaned, the house picked up, and then there’s the mad dash to get to work on time. It is now six months later, and I myself can’t even believe how much better I am than when I fi rst met Dr. In fact, we have been on vacation in the mountains this month, and I have done everything from hiking to biking to canoeing! When my husband was home sick from work and could not hear the television, that is when he knew I wasn’t making things up or exaggerating. The first day the sprays didn’t bother me, but by the third day my throat and eyes were irritated, and I noticed a loss of smell and taste.
The thing with fibro is that it lasts for days with the same flu-like symptoms, whereas a cold or flu would come, show its ugly face and leave.
She wakes up each morning at 5:30, gets the lunches packed and the breakfasts made, and then wakes her children. Jan was in a great deal of pain and on eight different drugs when she first consulted me years ago. My husband and I have commented over and over about how different things are from just a few months ago. I started feeling relief as soon as I cut those things out of my diet, and I could tell immediately when I ate or drank something that had a corn ingredient in it.
He told me that massage is only a temporary relief, that it may last only about a week and was a waste of time. She’s worked hard to get healthy and now takes only an occasional sleep aid (Ambien) and Advil. He did thorough blood work and actually knew what to look for, and he prescribed my vitamins according to my blood work.
I was furious with him because we obviously did not see eye to eye when it came to holistic healing vs meds that harm the body (not to mention that they are also a temporary relief and not a cure-all). He told me that he felt my symptoms were more that of chronic fatigue syndrome but that the symptoms are very similar to fibromyalgia. Your health is so important, and it is worth every penny to get a doctor who truly cares and can actually do something to help you. I again went to my family doctor who just smiled at me and said,”There’s nothing wrong with you, but if you like I can put you on prednisone.” I politely told him no thank you!
Then home to fix dinner, help John finish his homework, bathe the kids, clean up the bathroom, lay out the clothes for tomorrow, do a quick load of laundry, and return phone calls. I am a strong believer in God and the power of prayer, and so I asked the Lord to please direct me to the right doctor who could help me.Soon after that, I came across Dr.

She does whatever it takes to care for her precious children and herself.Thank you, Jan, and to all of you who do what it takes to be the best parent, friend, worker, citizen, and fibromyalgia conqueror you can be.
