Adrenal fatigue is a misunderstood medical condition and people are often unaware of its symptoms or causes.
Adrenal fatigue has many components, the physical level being a critical factor in healing so the body can come back into balance; but adrenal fatigue is not permanently healed without looking at the emotional, mental and spiritual components as well. The results of chronic stress can cause the adrenal glands to become exhausted and the sympathetic nervous system becomes over stimulated. This is the thing with adrenal fatigue, one system affects another, then affects another, and so on, until many systems in the body are not functioning properly, producing a host of symptoms too many to mention here.
The mainstream medical world does not recognise the term adrenal fatigue because it is not a disease as such but rather a collection of sign and symptoms, but I can assure you these symptoms are very real, and anyone going through adrenal fatigue can tell you this.
There are many stages of adrenal fatigue and the severity of your symptoms will determine what type of treatment is best for you and how long it can take to recover from. Disclaimer: I am not a medical doctor on this topic of adrenal fatigue or adrenal exhaustion, I am however coming from the position of my own personal experience with this and the largely unaccepted medical community explanation for the myriad of symptoms I was experiencing. The single biggest contributing factor to adrenal fatigue (or an altered adrenal profile, as I like to call it) is stress. If a person has completed an Adrenal Salivary Index (sometimes called and Adrenal Stress Index or ASI) test and there is output of cortisol over the course of the day that is not simply low at each measured time, then the adrenals are capable of producing cortisol, they are just “off” in how they are releasing it in response to the messages they receive from the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis (HPA Axis).
The way we can bring our adrenal health back in line is to balance out the types of messages our Hypothalamus is sending to our adrenal glands via the HPA Axis. Contact a naturopath, chiropractor, certified nutrition consultant or other practitioner in your area to find out if they can run an adrenal salivary index test for you. In my high school biology class, we gave the adrenal glands as much attention as the spleen. Adrenal fatigue is currently a chic diagnosis in the world of alternative medicine, although most doctors do not recognize this health issue. The adrenal medulla, the inner part, secretes adrenaline and noradrenaline, hormones that respond to stressors. Diet and supplements certainly improve adrenal fatigue, but you must make the lifestyle changes.
While it is possible, but difficult, to address adrenal fatigue on a vegetarian diet, it is impossible to reach optimal adrenal health on a vegan diet.
This stresses a healthy persons metabolism but chronically compromises the metabolism of someone with adrenal fatigue. I am not disagreeing with their experience, but I had severe adrenal fatigue and dedicated myself to healing through diet and lifestyle, without the need for expensive and potentially harmful supplements. This medication undoubtedly saved my life, but it utterly disrupted my already compromised adrenal function.
I am totally convinced that I have severe adrenal gland fatigue, and that I have had it for a long time.
My doctor diagnosed me with adrenal fatigue a month or so ago, and while it was good to have some clarity for my issues, it’s been really tough being tired, not sleeping, hardly digesting, etc. The adrenals are doing what they’re asked to do by the higher order functions of our bodies, but that may not be the desired action in terms of a healthy volume and balance for our cortisol throughout the day. During my short stint on a low carb diet (yes, I did try it before I knew better!) my adrenal fatigue symptoms drastically intensified. After the month, depending on the severity of your adrenal fatigue, you may be able to have a more lenient bedtime but for best results, stick to a 10 bedtime.
