With an important new regional plan to be unveiled for discussion in June 2010, we now apply Chicago’s program to the region. Originally trained as an actor, Brand has since been celebrated internationally as a writer, performer and composer. Within its museums and more arcane repositories, IU Bloomington houses nearly 200 years worth of papers, books, artwork, artifacts and other miscellany. In a career that has spanned more than 30 years, Warren has written poetry, produced translations and published literary criticism.


As a critic and translator, Warren has spent a great deal of time absorbing the writings of poets who worked in other languages.
Warren, who also has served as chancellor of the Academy of American Poets, was raised in Connecticut by her parents, both writers. The University of King’s College School of Journalism and the Dalhousie University Faculty of Graduate Studies jointly offer the only master of fine arts in creative nonfiction degree in Canada. In this two-year limited residency program, students combine short, intense residencies with ongoing one-to-one mentoring from professional nonfiction writer-teachers. 1 Book, 1 Chicagoland is modeled after Chicago’s annual program in which all residents are invited to read and talk about one book as a community. We ask all staff and citizens to read one book and discuss how the region should work together as a community so it grows best. All programs are tailored to meet the specific needs and preferences of the audience and its organizers.

The author shares her real life experiences and anecdotes of how she follows these steps, while helping students see how to apply them to their own writing. Most books are destroyed since the cost of shipping unsold stock back to the warehouse is more than the cost of printing a new book.

Getz Professor in the Wells Scholars Program and the editor of a 1999 volume of Audubon’s writings and drawings. Her father was Poet Laureate Robert Penn Warren, who won Pulitzers for both fiction and poetry, while her mother Eleanor Clark was a prize-winning author of criticism, fiction and travel books. Our students are professionals (of various kinds, not only journalists) working on book projects. But no story will be as great as the ones we will have to write over the next two or three decades… if Chicagoland is to become a global leader in the emerging economy. Last year’s book was The Plan of Chicago to coincide with the Centennial of Burnham’s plan of the same name. The first Blue Light Books winner will debut at the 50th anniversary of the Association of Writers and Writing Programs Feb. The filmmakers featured in this program have in turn appropriated Hitchcock’s work as their own raw material for their experimental films.
