At first their only thought was how to excuse their sin and escape the dreaded sentence of death.
Money cannot buy it, intellect cannot procure it, wisdom cannot attain to it; you can never hope, by your own efforts, to secure it. It is from the Father's heart that the streams of divine compassion, manifest in Christ, flow out to the children of men. In dying for sinners, Christ manifested a love that is incomprehensible; and as the sinner beholds this love, it softens the heart, impresses the mind, and inspires contrition in the soul. The man who manifests an infidel hardihood, or a stolid indifference to divine truth, is but reaping the harvest of that which he has himself sown.

But as the character of the Divine One was manifested to him, he saw his own deficiency and was humbled by the knowledge.
Sin, however small it may be esteemed, can be indulged in only at the peril of infinite loss. Those who feel the constraining love of God, do not ask how little may be given to meet the requirements of God; they do not ask for the lowest standard, but aim at perfect conformity to the will of their Redeemer. Then with Christ working in you, you will manifest the same spirit and do the same good works --works of righteousness, obedience. With earnest desire they yield all and manifest an interest proportionate to the value of the object which they seek.

And the heart that in its unrenewed state is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be, now delights in its holy precepts, exclaiming with the psalmist, "O how love I Thy law! His grace alone can quicken the lifeless faculties of the soul, and attract it to God, to holiness.
