4th realize that if you do not commit 100% to the goal & action steps, they are not going to happen. 5th, & this might be the biggest of all, realize your goals will require more discipline that your current set of habits requires.
If we don’t spend the time setting goals the right way and creating a system to help us follow through, they will remain aspirations. A study by a clinical psychologist at Dominican University of California found that when goals are shared with a friend, they are 23% more likely to happen.
Finally, you need to focus your goals on the activities you need to perform, rather than the outcomes.  These activities need to be habit-forming so that long-term permanent change can be affected.

2) Make A Plan – Once you know what your goals are, in order to achieve your goals, you now need a plan to make them happen. 3) Set A Deadline - If your goal has no deadline then you’ll just keep putting it off.
4) Take Action – Although it sounds obvious, a goal will never become a reality unless you take action.

The real reason most of us fail at reaching our goals is because we don’t have the right support system set up. When that same friend receives weekly updates on the goal progress, it is 33% more likely to be accomplished.
Think of your goals often and keep them in mind when making decisions in your life, even those that don't seem directly related to your goal. If you want to know how to achieve your goals, you’re going to have to set a date by which you want to meet all of them. Find an accountability partner, tell them about your goal, and create a schedule for checking in. Whether or not you achieve your goals is often largely up to what you do to make them happen. For example, making a decision about whether to move in with your girlfriend may not seem directly relevant to your goal to finish college, but if she is not very supportive of this goal, moving in with her could make it more difficult for you to do so. So make sure that you are actively and consistently working to achieve them, and that you don't let others determine whether you are successful or not. This kind of goal is specific enough to achieve, and is the first step in knowing how to achieve your goals.


Start working on your goals immediately, even if you’re only taking small steps to make them happen you will find that you will only achieve your goals if you constantly take action. You are much more likely to be successful in your goals if you have developed a skill set that will help you to achieve them, and if you have confidence in your ability to use those skills to achieve that goal. So, for example, if you have a relationship goal of reducing the amount of conflict and anger in your romantic relationship, it would be very helpful to learn some basic skills of effective communication. In other words, as you accomplish each step, you are that much closer to achieving the goal. When you have goals that are personally-driven, as opposed to motivated by some external factor (like what others may think of you), you are more likely to persevere when faced with challenges and to accomplish that goal. For example, if you reach out to your parents for support while obtaining the goal of getting a college degree. That said, having people around us who are not supportive of our goals, or who, even worse, actively demean them or discourage us from pursuing them can be really harmful to our success.
