THE YEAR'S ACTIVITIES AT AND NEAR THE CARDINAL BOB AND LIZ In celebration of a fine year and in anticipation of a beautiful Christmas, we thought we might provide a sampling of the kinds of things that happened to us in 2018
We're dreaming that everyone in the sound of our email has a white Christmas...even though it took until March this year for snow to appear beneath our porch at The Cardinal Retirement Residence here in Raleigh.
Already, in February, groundskeepers of Midtown Park had decided
that native grass was inappropriate for little doggies that grazed
there. They carefully replaced it with artificial turf, just before a
violent little wind attacked it and led it astray. All was repaired
the next day and little dogs on their leashes were able to graze to their
owner's content..
in July, the entire Dean Family and 4 dogs assembled at the Atlantic Beach
seashore for several days in the surf and sand. Here are our three
grandchildren, Smith, Nick and Anna, waiting for Grandpa to swim. He
didn't.
Anna's 16th birthday was celebrated during vacation, at a nearby Olive Garden. Everyone had a very nice time as Anna grew older before our very eyes.
In September, we were threatened by potential hurricane Florence. The staff of the Cardinal quickly prepared us for the worst while Liz pretended to be a weather reporter, to the amusement and enlightenment of all. Her appearance served to frighten Florence away from Raleigh and our entire Cardinal population survived: happy and intact.
At the Cardinal Halloween party, Bob and Liz were photographed in their frightening costumes
In October, Liz participated in the Cardinal version of "Antiques Road Show" showing everyone the 46-star flag that's been in her family since the early 20th century, and now in ours for many years.
And, just last month, Bob got a new, modern walker, which has
significantly speeded up his strolls around our hallways and (very
occasionally) up and down the streets of Midtown.

THE FAMILY, FROM THEIR HOMES ALL OVER Through the miracle of modern technology, we visited each of our sons and their families for their Christmas thoughts and for pictures of their families: PAUL DEAN AT BATON ROUGE The is the place where I work on my art projects and lesson preparation. This year I've mounted shows at the Baton Rouge Gallery and at some venues in New Orleans.
I
get vicarious enjoyment from the success of former students in the fields
of graphic arts and typography, and a close-up of my companion, Yoko.
This is my reading and study and relaxation room We like it here!
JIM'S FAMILY AT JARMAN DRIVE,
Through effective safety lectures and constant supervision, Jim continues to protect College of Design students from injury as he assists in perfecting their fascinating projects. Chloe is taking a Sabbatical leave from her teaching job in order to devote more time to her parents and her in-laws in their declining years. While she 's still available for occasional substitute-teaching assignments, she's also very helpful to us, with diagnosis of our health and our computer ills, with our transportation and with our general contentedness. Nick is a Sophomore at North Carolina State University, majoring in Chemical Engineering and residing in a dormitory on the new engineering campus. We'll be joining them in their Jarman Drive home for Christmas Eve story-telling. THE STEAMBOAT DEANS
Bruce got a new knee in January and is now able to ski and snowboard again. He also started playing mandolin and 'cello in the Irish band 'Spilt Pint' at one of the local Irish pubs.
Anna, now a High School Junior, sang, danced, and
acted in many High School performances.
Smith started High School,
briefly playing on the High School soccer team between injuries. He spends his
free time playing Fortnite and hanging out with friends
All went to Florida, with Josie, for Spring
Break.
Bruce, like his father, has a computer in his bedroom. Unlike his father, however, he earns a salary with it--from an oil exploration company in Houston. His father makes Christmas cards.
MERRY CHRISTMAS
