Herbal medicine or using plant based substances to resolve health problems is as old as mankind. It can be used to treat a wide variety of both acute and chronic conditions with the emphasis on treating the person as a whole, and work on the root cause of the problem rather than just giving symptomatic relief. One of the leading uses of herbal medicine today is to treat the symptoms of the menopause such as hot flushes and anxiety. If they look at the figures, anyone can see that allopathic medicine is the major cause of death in the U.S. Despite their well-known dirty tactics, they are gaining control of Australian health care as well.
It is big business; trillions of dollars in additional profits are at stake, and the Pharmaceuticals (with their investors in government and health care) will do anything to get them. Ayurveda originated more than 5000 years ago in India and is a holistic healing system that relies on Nature for its medicine chest.

Its medicines have evolved from thousands of years experience, observation and experiments. However, the Ayurvedic physician is the best judge of that, and his advice must be sought in the matter. Kerala, with its traditions, veritable natural beauty and friendly people, has played host to millions who come here every year. Ayurvedic and Unani medicines have proved to be of great benefit in musculoskeletal disorders, skin diseases, respiratory disorders and many other such complaints where allopathic medicines have failed to give results. In the beginning, it was passed on to different generations through sages after which proper documentation in books was done. It was developed into an elaborate system of medicine in the middle age era by the Arabs and the Persians. This system of medicine uses regimental therapy which includes processes that are believed to eliminate toxic agents and cause cleansing of the system through sweating, turkish bath, massage, purging, vomiting, exercise, leeching etc. These systems are based on the concept that the body constitutes of the 5 basic elements air, water, fire, earth and ether and an imbalance in these causes diseases. It promotes the use of herbal medicinal products manufactured to pharmaceutical standards to ensure consistently high quality and effectiveness for the consumer.
We can now use the wisdom of the past in combination with the knowledge and research of modern times to produce effective, safe remedies, that work with the bodies own natural healing abilities.

The plants used in Ayurvedic medicines are found all over India and the world, but Kerala in India is specially blessed with the ideal climate and soil conditions to nurture their abundant growth.
The recipes and methodology have been prescribed by the ancient rishis or sages, and handed down from generation to generation.
Ayurvedic medicines also include Bhasmas that are fine powdery preparations of minerals or chemicals, purified by special processes usually at high temperatures, and Grithams which are preparations of herbs in ghee.
Today, Ayurveda Medicines are used as adjuvant to allopathic medicines in most chronic and degenerative diseases.
Ayurveda follows the approach of 5 elements that this universe is composed of namely air (vayu), water (jal), fire (agni), earth (prithvi), and ether (akash). Unani emphasizes on the role of key elements air, earth, fire and water in constituting health in the human body. Unani medicine also gives great importance to special diets by regulating the quality and quantity of food.
In the Ayurvedic system of medicine,  diagnosis is based on examination of 8 different aspects of the body.

Another common Ayurvedic preparation known as Asavas is prepared by directly using fresh herbal juices that are fermented.
Kashayams are made by boiling herbs in water until a concentrated form of the decoction is obtained. As such, there is no harm in taking simple herbal formulations of Ayurveda over the counter, but mineral based medicines must be used only after due consultation with the doctor. These 5 elements are represented in the human body as doshas which are called vata, pitta and kapha. Ayurveda also uses the panchkarma therapy as a part of its treatment which involves purification through 5 processes of vomiting, purgation, enema, elimination through nose, and blood detoxification.
The Ayurvedic system of medicine believes that each individual possesses a unique combination of these doshas which defines the temperament and mental makeup.
The 4 humors are blood (dam), phlegm (balgham), yellow bile (safra), and black bile (sauda). Both of these systems of medicine also believe in cleansing and purification through various processes and use of medicines made from natural substances.
The correct ingredients for each medicine are correctly selected and the herbs are freshly collected, painstakingly cleaned and then sun-dried. Both Asavas and Arishtas are liquid in nature, have a sweet taste, a smell similar to that of alcohol and acquire strength with time.
An imbalance in these 5 elements in turn causes an imbalance in these doshas which gives rise to diseases. Each step is carried out with devotion, for Ayurveda is not just about medicine, it is a spiritual experience as well. In an Ayurvedic diet, churna supplements are relied upon for many dietary and nutritional uses. The herbal mixture is thought to purify the blood and improve digestion when regularly used.
These are nadi (pulse), mala (stool), mootra (urine), jivnha (tongue), shabd (speech), druk (vision), sparsh (touch), aakruti (appearance).
