Although the exact cause for this condition is unclear, a number of factors can contribute to the formation of a neuroma. Biomechanical deformities, such as a high-arched foot or a flat foot, can lead to the formation of a neuroma. Wear shoes with plenty of room for the toes to move, low heels, and laces or buckles that allow for width adjustment. Wear shoes with thick, shock-absorbent soles and proper insoles that are designed to keep excessive pressure off of the foot. High heels should be avoided whenever possible because they place undo strain on the forefoot and can contribute to a number of foot problems.
For simple, undeveloped neuromas, a pair of thick-soled shoes with a wide toe box is often adequate treatment to relieve symptoms, allowing the condition to diminish on its own. Treatment options vary with the severity of each neuroma, and identifying the neuroma early in its development is important to avoid surgical correction. The primary goal of most early treatment regimens is to relieve pressure on areas where a neuroma develops. Special padding at the ball of the foot may change the abnormal foot function and relive the symptoms caused by the neuroma.
Anti-inflammatory drugs and cortisone injections can be prescribed to ease acute pain and inflammation caused by the neuroma. When early treatments fail and the neuroma progresses past the threshold for such options, podiatric surgery may become necessary.
Remember that foot pain is not normal, and any disruption in foot function limits your freedom and mobility.
Surgical excision (neurectomy) to remove a neuroma is frequently done when cortisone injections, foot inserts and anti-inflammatory medication fail.
Sclerosing therapy can be done in the office and often produces the same level of relief without the risks associated with surgery.
For those of you who were wondering how my feet were doing, since I mentioned how painful they were in my trips to San Gorgonio and the Muir Taco trip to the Sierra, they are doing a little better. Morton’s neuroma involves a thickening of the tissue around one of the nerves leading to your toes.
I’ve purchased new hiking shoes, bought new everyday shoes, modified my Superfeet inserts, and had a cortisone shot in my foot. Verruca Pedis or as they are more commonly known Plantar Warts they are caused by the human papilloma virus. A Verruca Pedis or plantar wart is a small  lesion which appears on the plantar surface of the foot when looked at closely it resembles a cauliflower with tiny black spots or petechiae in the middle.
Common treatments include acids and pastes there is currently no vaccine to treat warts, Cryotherapy is a very common form of treatment. Dry skin in diabetes is caused by the dehydration of the body due to the constant urinating to remove the glucose in the blood. If you have dry skin due to diabetes then your skin will start peeling and cracking slowly.

The high sugar levels in the blood provide excellent breeding ground for many skin infections. Fungal infections like ringworm and vaginal infections are also common in diabetic patients. The feet are flexible structures of bones, joints, muscles, and soft tissues that let us stand upright and perform activities like walking, running, and jumping. Muscles, tendons, and ligaments run along the surfaces of the feet, allowing the complex movements needed for motion and balance. Plantar fasciitis: Inflammation in the plantar fascia ligament along the bottom of the foot.
Osteoarthritis of the feet: Age and wear and tear cause the cartilage in the feet to wear out.
Gout: An inflammatory condition in which crystals periodically deposit in joints, causing severe pain and swelling.
Athlete's foot: A fungal infection of the feet, causing dry, flaking, red, and irritated skin. Rheumatoid arthritis: An autoimmune form of arthritis that causes inflammation and joint damage.
Bunions (hallux valgus): A bony prominence next to the base of the big toe that may cause the big toe to turn inward.
Achilles tendon injury: Pain in the back of the heel may suggest a problem with the Achilles tendon. Diabetic foot infection: People with diabetes are vulnerable to infections of the feet, which can be more severe than they appear. Swollen feet (edema): A small amount of swelling in the feet can be normal after prolonged standing and common in people with varicose veins.
Calluses: A buildup of tough skin over an area of frequent friction or pressure on the feet.
Corns: Like calluses, corns consist of excessive tough skin buildup at areas of excessive pressure on the feet. Heel spurs: An abnormal growth of bone in the heel, which may cause severe pain during walking or standing. Fallen arches (flat feet): The arches of the feet flatten during standing or walking, potentially causing other feet problems. Nail fungal infection (onychomycosis): Fungus creates discoloration or a crumbling texture in the fingernails or toenails. Mallet toes: The joint in the middle of a toe may become unable to straighten, causing the toe to point down. Fracture: The metatarsal bones are the most frequently broken bones in the feet, either from injury or repetitive use. Morton's neuroma: A growth consisting of nerve tissue often between the third and fourth toes. Custom Orthotics prevent tearing of the plantar fascia ligament by supporting tight muscles and problematic arches, thereby relieving the pain caused by Plantar Fasciitis. The medication is mixed with a numbing agent to make the process comfortable.  This method offers pain relief without the need for long-term oral medication, which can eventually be damaging to the stomach. Health conditions, lifestyle habits, heredity, injury, surgery, age, and pregnancy all play a role. Wider widths, arch support, extra depth and orthotic friendly shoes offer comfort enhancements. It is a benign growth of nerve tissue frequently found between the third and fourth toes that brings on pain, a burning sensation, tingling, or numbness between the toes and in the ball of the foot.
Those suffering from the condition often find relief by stopping their walk, taking off their shoe, and rubbing the affected area. These foot types bring on instability around the toe joints, leading to the development of the condition.
For more severe conditions, however, podiatric medical treatment or surgery may be necessary to remove the tumor.
Podiatric medical care should be sought at the first sign of pain or discomfort; if left untreated, neuromas tend to get worse. Your podiatric physician will examine and likely X-ray the affected area and suggest a treatment plan that best suits your individual case. The procedure, which removes the inflamed and enlarged nerve, can usually be conducted on an outpatient basis, with a recovery time that is often just a few weeks. It is important to schedule an appointment with your podiatrist at the first sign of pain or discomfort in your feet, and follow proper maintenance guidelines to ensure their proper health for the rest of your life. However, surgery should be considered as a last option due to the associated risks such as infection, scar tissue or recurrence.
More importantly, there are no restrictions on activity after the injections, as there would be with surgery.
Morton’s neuroma may feel as if you are standing on a pebble in your shoe or on a fold in your sock.
I encourage people to get outside, promote stewardship of the outdoors, and engage people in the spirit of the wilderness.

I had been hiking a lot more than I ever had before, and I came down a mountain too fast… and boom. The virus gains entry to the skin through micro trauma and abrasions to the skin more correctly the stratum corneum which is the outer layer of the skin. They can be differentiated from common corns by observing the skin straie (like fingerprints) with a verruca the straie run up to the wart and then diverge around the wart, with corns the straie run straight through the corn.
At Brighton Podiatry we are using the latest form of treatment to eradicate Verruca Pedis  (plantar warts) that is laser. The skin will form a mild Blister and over the next few weeks the tissue including the wart will slough off. Skin complications during diabetes are quite common with almost thirty percent of diabetic patients suffering from some skin complication or other. Do not peel the skin yourself or use dirty nails to scratch the skin’s surface as it can cause skin infections. When the skin is dry and has been scratched too often it has cuts and wounds that these organisms tend to invade.
One of the best ways to avoid these symptoms is by taking proper care of your skin especially if you have open cuts and wounds, keep gauze pads and antibacterial ointments handy so that you can dress and cover up these wounds as soon as possible.
The Achilles tendon connects the heel to the calf muscle and is essential for running, jumping, and standing on the toes. People with diabetes should examine their feet daily for any injury or signs of developing infection such as redness, warmth, swelling, and pain.
Calluses usually develop on the balls of the feet or the heels and may be uncomfortable or painful. People with plantar fasciitis, flat feet, or high arches are more likely to develop heel spurs. Irritation and other feet problems may develop without special footwear to accommodate the mallet toe.
A neuroma may cause pain, numbness, and burning and often improves with a change in footwear. It is usually caused by a collapse of the transverse arch that runs across the ball of the foot. A doctor’s referral may be required to qualify for insurance plans to cover some costs of your foot comfort solution. At times, the patient will describe the pain as similar to having a stone in his or her shoe. Your podiatric physician will thoroughly describe the surgical procedures to be used and the results you can expect.
The advice in this pamphlet should not be used as a substitute for a consultation or evaluation by a podiatric physician.
The not-so-bright side is that I still feel regular pain, especially when walking on uneven surfaces, like a rock in the trail or along a hillside. There is minimal pain to the patient most (dependent on size of the wart) say they feel minor discomfort for only a few days.
Make sure that you moisturize your skin well after having a bath and whenever the skin feels dry.
Bacterial infections like folliculitis, boils and carbuncles are quite common in patients suffering from diabetic dry skin.
Please visit your doctor to complete Elio’s Prescription Form for orthotics or a custom footwear solution from Elio’s.
Any pain following surgery is easily managed with medications prescribed by your podiatrist. The fluctuations in the blood glucose levels can also lead to the dry skin symptoms in diabetes.

Pain is caused by pressure on the digital nerves as they pass between the heads of the metatarsal bones, most commonly between the third and fourth toes, and secondarily between the second and third toes.
