Chinese medicine practitioners like to utilize all the tools we possibly can in helping us to diagnose your health conditions, even your face! Each section of the skin on your face represents a different organ, and can give clues as to what may be out of balance.
I have put together this face map image so you can get a visual idea of where each organ is represented, and what it means for your health. If you have dark circles under your eyes, it could indicate inhalant allergies such as allergies to pollen, dust, grasses etc.  You might notice a correlation between these dark circles and when you get strong hayfever symptoms. HEART – The tip of your nose, which is represented by your Heart, may be prone to redness and broken capillaries.  If you see this on your own face, make sure you check in with your doctor and do a general health check that includes your blood pressure and cholesterol. Traditional Chinese Medicine takes the person into account especially body constitution (gender, age, occupation, current balance of health, temperament, stress factors, climate, season, weather conditions at the time, along with other circumstances) before prescribing a healing diet for an individual. That being said, there are foods that are specific to each season and below you will see some of those that harmonize most with Autumn, the season we are in now.  There are also a few recipes for Autumn and a discussion of how the season affects us and what we can do to harmonize with it more. Because the movement of the Autumn season is to begin the process of contraction towards oncoming Winter, foods that are part of that movement are beneficial to eat and would include tart apples, red grapes, and plums. As the Autumn progresses, and we move closer to Winter, adding winter-flavors and foods assists that transition.  As you can see, there is always this brilliant movement of one pattern emerging so that another pattern can unfold from it as it reaches its zenith. Apples, Apricot, Bamboo Shoots, Barley, Basil, Bai Mu Er – aka White Fungus or Snow Fungus, Cauliflower, Chicken Egg, Chickweed, Cilantro, Coriander, Cow’s Milk, Eggplant, Fennel bulb, Garlic, Ginger, Honey, Job’s Tears (Chinese Barley), Kohlrabi, Kumquat, Lily Bulb, Lotus Root, Lotus seeds, Mustard – leaf and seeds, Onions – Green, Yellow, Red, Shallots, Parsnip, Peanuts, Pears, Peppermint, Persimmon, Pine Nut, Radish, Sauerkraut, Spinach, Strawberry, Walnut, Water Chestnut. A situation many of us who work in office buildings face is the lack of fresh air.  We breathe “recycled air” and with the cooler weather the heating systems are cranking up and drying the air even more. 1 small pumpkin, kabocha, hubbard, acorn, butternut, or other dense gourd-like squash cut lengthwise in 3” wide pieces with the skin.
Cut the vegetables into chunky, triangular wedge shapes leaving the skin on the potatoes and the squash.
3-4 cups of peeled chopped pears – try to choose fragrant pears such as Barlett, Williams, Asian. Heat the oil in a large pot and add the garlic, onion, and celery.  Sweat for about 15 to 20 minutes stirring constantly to prevent any browning.
Then fill the pumpkin with the cooked ingredients and cover with “lid” and steam until tender.

The following is a brief discussion of the Five Elements, how they relate to the different areas of a balanced life and how we can use them to bring balance into our lives. Some people are overly identified with their life plan at the expense of other areas of their lives. We’ve all had those wild weekends where we stayed out all night, had a fabulous time with our friends, and blew off the next day’s obligations.
In order to balance this excess fire energy, I recommend placing strong attention on water (meditation), wood (using a calendar to schedule to-do’s) and earth energies (making sure the home is clean, inviting and full of healthy, nourishing food). Earth is related to food and nourishment, nurturing and compassion, as well as to our home. Unfortunately, our fast-paced, demanding culture causes people to neglect the earth element. There are also people who eat in order to manage stress and soothe emotions (food, nourishment, and self-nurturing). Metal is related to self-worth and achievement (including financial and career achievement). According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the head is where the yang meridians of the arms and legs met, and the governor vessel which controls yang qi of the whole body also reaches the head.

In TCM, the brain is the sea of marrow, which derived from essence and blood of the liver and kidney, and nourished by nutrient essence of the spleen and stomach.
Depletion of kidney essence or insufficiency of brain marrow makes the head under nourished and dysfunction, leading to symptoms like headaches.
Emotional upset or stress can lead to liver qi stagnation; as time passes the stagnated liver will generate fire. When the spleen is dysfunctional, it cannot transform food and drinks into nutrient essence effectively, there will be inadequate nutrient essence to supply the head and mental activity will weaken. Basically, TCM believes that headaches are either due to excessive pathogens that block the collaterals and impair the orifices of the head, or due to insufficiency of essence and blood that fail to nourish and support the brain. As headache symptoms are manifested in different ways, it will be a great difference in the treatment strategies and drug applications.
Exogenous headaches are usually induced by external factors, present with excess syndromes, that require dispersing the accumulated wind or other pathogens for the treatment.
Sometimes, the nature of pain helps understand the cause and underlying disharmony pattern, which provide guideline to decide specific method for relieving headaches. There are many meridians running through the head, which make it closely links up with the rest of body. But what do we eat for good health and what information do we follow to guide us through the roller coaster of daily living?  Certainly magazines, news reports, newspaper articles, internet sources (excellent to suspicious) do their best to give us information that we can use.  But can we actually use it? How does the person’s digestive system come into play for digesting, assimilating, and dispersing the food? Applying the principles of TCM, we can pretty easily discern what we need and choose foods that are health giving and enlivening.
The tartness inherent in these foods has the effect of contraction and therefore harmonizes with the season. They connect our “insides” with our “outside” through the nose, its sense organ.  The Lung is literally the highest organ in the torso and directs the qi it receives downward to the other organs.
It’s important in Autumn to create as much balance as possible as the oncoming Winter season has fear as its emotion, which is contracting.

The Five elements not only help to understand balance and imbalance in our bodies but also in our homes (Feng Shui) and in our lives. I often suggest that my patients look for ways to bring each of the Five Elements into a week, month or year to better achieve balance in their lives.
They might be considered over-achievers or “workaholics.” A remedy for this is to participate in gentle wood activities such as spending time walking in nature or attending a restorative yoga class (wood is related to muscles and tendons, and stretching relaxes wood energy). Not only is this is okay, it’s actually important to do occasionally, but fire imbalance can manifest through living this way EVERY DAY. Without proper nourishment and an orderly home base, it is challenging to be a grounded, functioning, healthy person in the world. They also benefit from assessing their situation and balancing the earth element in their lives. I have a professional background in health and wellness, dietary supplements, and nutrition, and embark every day to live a well, balanced, happy life. Unhealthy lifestyle or temporary bodily weakness can make the head susceptible to external pathogens.
A dysfunctional spleen also produces dampness and phlegm that attack the head orifices directly, and so cause headaches.
Also, long-term and persistent headaches that present with a stabbing pain are related to localized blood stagnation, the collaterals of the head are usually affected. When making a headache diagnosis, TCM physicians focus on the details such as nature of pain, location of pain, frequency, duration, triggering or aggravating factors, accompanied symptoms, pulse and tongue manifestations.
On the other hand, endogenous headaches are mostly due to internal weakness, present with deficiency syndromes or a combination of both excess and deficiency syndromes, that are treated by methods like nourishing, resolving, clearing or subduing to rebuild the internal balance of the body.
Based on the order and arrangement of the meridian flow, physicians can identify the internal disharmonies associated with headaches. It sounds so complicated — determining what foods are beneficial and how to use them and combine them?  Are foods just a conglomeration of “nutrients” as defined by bio-medicine or is there something more? There are, however, general guidelines and lots of information about food and applying it to oneself and family.

When we refer to the foods that harmonize with the season, we notice that many of them add moisture or help to retain moisture, such as Snow Fungus, Pears, Spinach, and so on. Kindness and benevolence, which are expanding energies, can balance the contraction and anxieties of Winter – kindness to oneself as well as others.  By observing Five Element Theory we can find ways to cultivate emotional healing in any season, at any time. Stir fry the sliced garlic and add the chicken breast, stir fry until it is just lightly cooked.  Add the pumpkin pulp and B and cook until lightly tender. Her training in massage therapy, qigong, reiki, meditation & mindfulness and energy work also inform her style of practice. For patients who feel stuck in this area, I often suggest incorporating creative activities to generate a flow toward bigger picture ideas. This is when many of us leave our parents’ homes, create our urban families and start searching for a partner. Sometimes a person’s living situation is disruptive (hoarding, disharmony with housemates) which impacts basic household needs like cooking at home or feeling like there’s a safe place to decompress. It is said that Einstein took naps and woke from them with breakthroughs in the problems and concepts he was working out. In being true to myself and what I seek in life, I hope to inspire others to do the same, to cultivate wellbeing in their own lives. Moreover, essence and blood of the five zang organs and lucid yang (pure essence) of the six fu organs are all infusing into the head, which nourish the brain (sea of marrow) and orifices of the head. Six pathogens (or evils as they are often known in TCM) may enter the meridians of the head, interrupt the body's yang qi flowing upward, and cause blood and qi stagnated in the head. A thorough medical history and physical examination is crucial to identify the headache types and the underlying disharmonies of the body, appropriate treatment plan can then be decided on. Locations of headache pain help clarify the involved organs and meridians, and thus determine what specific functions need to be restored. The Lung is known as a “delicate” organ and is, indeed, very sensitive to changes in hot, cold, dryness, dampness, and wind. When the water is absorbed the vegetables should be cooked, but not mushy.  If the vegetables are not yet cooked, add a v. I also recommend working with a coach to help guide and motivate patients in creating and following through on a life plan. The first thing I get these patients to do is to brainstorm a list of activities that have brought them joy in the past. Sometimes the most important things a person can do to make a health shift are things like scheduling grocery shopping, cooking meals for the week, packing the next day’s lunch and snacks before going to bed, cleaning and de-cluttering the home, and maybe even looking for a new living situation. Are you preoccupied with showing off the external signs of your achievement with toys and bragging or do you wear your asceticism like a badge of honor? The head is closely connected with other parts of the body, and all the organs are responsible for nourishing it. Headaches have numerous causes and can involve different pathological mechanisms, TCM generally classifies into two major categories: exogenous headaches and endogenous headaches. The headaches are often induced by a combined attack of wind pathogens and other seasonal pathogens, which make the body act differently during the development process. We don’t read that statement and think, “Oh no, they should have ice cream.” That just doesn’t make sense to us. Once the list is made we find creative ways to reincorporate those activities into their lives. Factors such as abnormal weathers, external pathogens, emotional or organ problems can easily affect the head. If I have a big week at work (wood), I make sure to schedule quiet time knitting or reading a good book (water). In the case of a patient who is feeling blue as a result of high pressure job stress, we might schedule a portion of their weekend to do something fun outside. If you’re not getting adequate rest, not only will your executive function (wood) suffer, you will become sick – never mind being disconnected from your own internal wisdom. Headaches will be triggered when these external or internal factors impede the flow of the meridians, disturb nutrient supply to the head, or block the orifices.
