Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is one of the oldest and most comprehensive healing systems in the world.
The challenge TCM faces in the modern world is the ability to communicate its wisdom and understanding in a way that includes and expands on our present level of scientific sophistication.
This series of four presentations will help students, practitioners and anyone interested in Chinese medicine see it’s concepts and principles through the lens of a microscope, through the perception of shamanic healing traditions and finally through the telescope of quantum physics.
In the first presentation the concept of Qi as a literal substance will explored and redefined in a way that includes western anatomy and physiology, the shamanic traditions of indigenous healers and some mysteries that science has yet to explain.
In the second presentation the five fundamental systems or Five Elements of Chinese medicine will be explored with the 21st century medical models of physiology and pathology, basically what keeps us healthy and what can go wrong.
In the third presentation the external and internal pathogenic influences and pathological emotional states (the influences that make us sick) will be explored and verified with leading edge medical research. In the final presentation the therapeutic benefits of acupuncture will be explored, redefined and made even more subtle and energetically profound.

Developing and refining over the last 5,000 years, TCM brings potent wisdom, many practical applications and a unique perspective on health and healing.

This communication gap has made it difficult for TCM to be recognized and accepted by the scientific medical community and often prevents many patients from accessing the benefits of literally thousands of years of clinical experience. The wisdom and effectiveness of a holistic systems based approach to healing will be compared with the diagnosis and disease management protocols of modern allopathic medicine. The nature and limits of our instincts and our adaptability as human beings will provide some insight on how to improve our health and our lives. Some aspects of how acupuncture works are completely common sense and other aspects demand the coherent concentration of a Shaman and an experiential understanding of the way the universe works. This is one of the reasons that the Japanese tattooing tradition has persisted for so long and has appealed to so many outside of Japanese culture. Aqui presentaremos algunos simbolos importantes procedente de la sabiduria oriental, como el Budismo, Hinduismo, Taoismo y el Zen.
Michael Smith is a respected Integrative medicine pioneer and the author of Returning to an Ancestral Diet.
If you’re thinking about getting a Japanese tattoo, then we recommend reading this guide to get acquainted with the meaning of traditional Japanese tattoos and their meaning.
Smith has focused on combining the leading edge sciences of functional medicine and nutritional medicine with the ancient wisdom of Traditional Chinese medicine and the healing traditions of his indigenous ancestors. Over time, tattoos in Japanese culture developed as a form of punishment similar to what was seen in Rome where it was common practice to tattoo prisoners of war, criminals, and slaves as a means of making their status in society instantly recognizable.
Michael is a survivor of a near fatal form of Crohn’s disease, an autoimmune disease that affects millions of people all over the world.
The modern association between Japanese traditional tattoos and the criminal element is said to have led to the adoption of tattoos by the Yakuza, the Japanese mafia. These images are used to convey a person’s beliefs, aspirations, or character traits. In Japanese traditional tattoo art, dragons are generous, benevolent forces that use their strength to do good for mankind.
Koi are a specially bred type of carp, a fish native to China, where the Koi actually originates.

Koi are given masculine qualities in traditional Eastern folklore such as strength and bravery.
Most of us are familiar with the story of the Phoenix, a bird that is consumed by fire and then rises from its own ashes. Many are not aware that the story exists in many cultures and at many times throughout history including Greek and Roman mythology, Middle Eastern folklore, and even the Americas. The Japanese phoenix story draws its source from the story that’s indigenous to mainland China. Snake tattoos also represent wisdom and protection, particularly from the results of bad decisions.
The snake can also embody regeneration, healing, and medicine as it was revered in Japanese culture in association with medicinal rites and remedies. As a symbol of good luck, it was also though to bring good health. The Japanese snake tattoo also represents the Divine Feminine, or the holy female attributes.
It was thought that much in the same way a snake sheds its skin, a woman could take on the positive attributes of a man. One instance of this would include a monk who becomes an Oni after death to protect his temple.
Oni, in traditional Japanese folklore, we marauding ogres known for terrorizing villages and tormenting villagers.
Their association with demons in Japanese tattoo art has more to do with ogres being grouped into the realm of supernatural creatures (along with yokai) than anything else.
Specifically, waves are an element of Japanese tattoo art that are perhaps among the most recognizable (Think traditional Japanese artists, like Hokusai). The image of water in Japanese traditional tattoos is often combined with Koi, Dragons, or Oni.
In addition to symbolizing strength and life, water tattoos convey the belief that life, like water, ebbs and flows.
