This month, the CDC released its Breastfeeding Report Card for 2014, coinciding with National Breastfeeding Month in the United States. It is well established and widely recognized that breastfeeding provides numerous health benefits for both mothers and infants.
Beyond health benefits, breastfeeding can also save money for both individuals and the health care system.
One area  of focus regarding breastfeeding in our report Lots to Lose: How America’s Health and Obesity Crisis Threatens Our Economic Future, was the importance of workplace support for nursing mothers as a key component in reducing the barriers to breastfeeding throughout the first six months of a child’s life.
We recognize that the workplace is only one environment in which breastfeeding support needs to be made a priority.
Cutaneous nevi, commonly known as moles, may be a novel predictor of breast cancer, according to two studies published in this week's PLOS Medicine. The researchers reached these conclusions by using data from two large prospective cohortsa€“ the Nurses' Health Study in the United States, including 74,523 female nurses followed for 24 years, and the E3N Teachers' Study Cohort in France, including 89,902 women followed for 18 years.
In the Nurses' Health Study, Han and colleagues asked study participants to report the number of nevi >3mm on their left arm at the initial assessment. In the E3N Study, including mostly teachers, Kvaskoff and colleagues asked study participants to report whether they had no, a few, many, or very many moles. These studies do not suggest that nevi cause breast cancer, but raise the possibility that nevi are affected by levels of sex hormones, which may be involved in the development of breast cancer.
In a linked Perspective, Barbara Fuhrman and Victor Cardenas discuss the potential implications of the findings from these studies. Young women who smoke and have been smoking a pack a day for a decade or more have a significantly increased risk of developing the most common type of breast cancer.
A study of predominantly white women finds a larger waist circumference is associated with higher risk of postmenopausal breast cancer, but not beyond its contribution to BMI.
A research study led by cancer specialists at MedStar Washington Hospital Center found that African-American women frequently present with biologically less favorable subtypes of breast cancer. Cancer is a disease of our genes - yet our understanding of how our genetic makeup affects our risk of cancer is still rudimentary. Here's one more reason to consider cutting back on the soda: drinking too many sugary drinks on a daily basis has been linked to gallbladder cancer.
Scientists at Lancaster University have shed light on the metabolic switch observed in abnormal cells like cancer. Equally as many, and perhaps more scientific articles delineate the drawbacks of eating meat.
Red meats generally have more cholesterol and saturated fat than chicken, fish, and vegetable proteins. Dietary guidelines must carefully consider the health effects of recommendations for alternative macronutrients to replace trans fats and saturated fats. To see our content at its best we recommend upgrading if you wish to continue using IE or using another browser such as Firefox, Safari or Google Chrome. However the study found no link between breastfeeding and reduced risk fo cancer in those women without a history of breast cancer in their family. The study found women whose sister or mother had had breast cancer lowered their own chances of the disease by breastfeeding by 60 per cent The link was not affected by whether how long women breastfed for, whether they fed their baby exclusively on breast milk.

The results of the report show that 79 percent of mothers initiate breastfeeding, up from 75 percent a year ago. In our 2012 report, Lots to Lose: How America’s Health and Obesity Crisis Threatens Our Economic Future, we highlighted supporting breastfeeding mothers and babies as a key piece in the fight against obesity by giving everyone a healthy start to life. World Breastfeeding Week 2014 highlights the connection between the goal to increase breastfeeding rates and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
Hospitals and health care providers also have key roles to play in giving nursing mothers the necessary tools to breastfeed. Strategies to Prevent Obesity and Other Chronic Diseases: The CDC Guide to Strategies to Support Breastfeeding Mothers and Babies.
Jiali Han and colleagues from Indiana University and Harvard University, United States, and Marina Kvaskoff and colleagues from INSERM, France, report that women with a greater number of nevi are more likely to develop breast cancer. They observed that women with "very many" nevi had a 13% higher breast cancer risk than women reporting no nevi, although the association was no longer significant after adjusting for known breast cancer risk factors, especially benign breast disease or family history of breast cancer, which were themselves associated with nevi number. The findings do suggest that the number of nevi could be used as a marker of breast cancer risk, but it is unclear whether or how this information would improve risk estimation based on established risk factors. They say: "Additional studies should be carried out to investigate melanocytic nevi and other cutaneous features in association with the risks of breast cancer and other estrogen-related proliferative diseases. Dietary iron intake, equivalent to heavy red meat consumption, suppresses leptin, a hormone that regulates appetite. Recent gout research says: some foods should be avoided, not all foods with purines should be eliminated, some foods should be eaten to control uric acid levels.
Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish and some plant sources, may reduce cardiovascular disease risk.
Nurses’ Health Study II, the risk of breast cancer was 22% greater in women who ate 1.5 servings of red meat per day than in those who ate 1 serving of red meat per week.
All meat may contain bacteria that can cause food poisoning if not destroyed by proper cooking. Sperm from men attending a fertility clinic who reported a diet high in processed meat had less success fertilizing eggs than that from men who ate more chicken. Researchers looked at the effects on Alzheimer risk of 3 diets: a standard Mediterranean-type diet, the Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension diet (DASH), and Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND). The rise in diagnoses of colorectal cancer correlates with an increase in red meat’s portion size and frequency of consumption.
Saturated fats are not associated with all cause mortality, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and associated mortality, coronary heart disease (CHD) and associated mortality, ischemic stroke, or type 2 diabetes, but the evidence is heterogeneous with methodological limitations. In a subgroup of women, they observed that postmenopausal women with six or more nevi had higher blood levels of estrogen and testosterone than women with no nevi, and that the association between nevi and breast cancer risk disappeared after adjustment for hormone levels.

The more iron is consumed, the greater the likelihood that leptin levels will drop, resulting in increased appetite and the potential to overeat. A gout diet should cut back on saturated fats from red meats, fatty poultry, and high-fat dairy products.
The risk increased by 54% per additional daily red meat serving in current oral contraceptive users.

The gut microbiota may be pivotal in the heme-induced epithelial damage that leads to hyperplasia.
Trans fats are associated with all cause mortality, total CHD, and CHD mortality, probably because of higher levels of intake of industrial trans fats than ruminant trans fats.
Share these tips with your patients to lower the amount of saturated fat and cholesterol they get when they eat meat: Choose lean cuts (the package usually contains the word round, loin, or sirloin).

These examples are encouraging, but more positive changes are needed to ensure that every mother who wishes to breastfeed has the ability to do so exclusively for the first six months of her child’s life. As of August 18, 2014, the world is officially 500 days away from the expiration of the deadline for the MDGs, which were originally meant to be achieved by 2015.
