Medical journals may have played a role in helping to justify the war on Iraq by over-emphasising the importance of bioterrorism, a British public health expert has argued. The claims are made by Professor Ian Roberts of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in this week's British Medical Journal (BMJ). Roberts analysed the number of articles on bioterrorism in five major medical journals between 1999 and 2000, and found reports on the topic increased from two to 72.
Roberts found that of the 124 articles on bioterrorism reviewed, 63% came from the United States - with the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) publishing 47% - followed by the BMJ at 21%, The Lancet at 16%, and the New England Journal of Medicine at 15%. Roberts' analysis in the BMJ was just one of many letters debating the question of how political generalist medical journals should be.
According to Delamothe, the BMJ's scope is to cover "clinical, scientific, social, political and economic factors affecting health", which led to the inevitable accusation by some readers that the balance between 'political' and 'clinically useful' material was wrong. When it came to the conflict in Iraq, Delamothe said that articles on subjects such as chemical weapons were part of a slew of stories that "stoked up fears and justified the allies' response". According to Dr Colin Butler, a postdoctoral fellow at the Australian National University's National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health in Canberra, trying to ignore politics is itself "deeply political". In his contribution to the BMJ debate, Butler wrote: "Your pages should reflect a diversity of opinion.

Log in to Reply Iltifat Husain, MD May 21, 2012 at 9:30 pm # also, these journals all tend to change their pricing often. Rather, you need a subscription to their service, or a subscription to the online journal to access it. Log in to Reply Aju Mathew February 4, 2013 at 11:20 am # This is a great article, However it is missing some o fthe top journal iPad apps published by Elsevier. I would also consider them to be innovative as many of these journals include videos of actual procedures. The Journal of Hand Surgery for instance has articles dedicated to specific surgeries that surgeons view study and share with their team prior to a surgery.
Some complex surgeries and documented and shared via this app, when published as a new article.
