As terrifying as a diagnosis of cancer can be, stories of individuals taking their health into their own hands, and defeating so-called ‘terminal’ illness through natural methods are common. At one point or another, most of us have come across an encouraging story of someone who lived to tell the tale of refusing conventional cancer therapy, and instead opting for a natural healing protocol. After plenty of research and prayer, Chris decided to take the road less traveled, and ditch the conventional treatments for alternative medicine – specifically, a 100 percent raw vegan diet. Though stigma still surrounds the cultivation and use of cannabis, more and more people are realizing that the crop isn’t only beneficial for the environment, it may seriously help individuals who suffer from afflictions such as cancer. In the past, True Activist has shared powerful stories of individuals healing themselves from debilitating conditions with cannabis oil. High Times reports that American stuntman Mark Chavarria was the type of individual who never slowed down. Even when he noticed health issues that should have been a red flag for him to visit his doctor, he kept his attention on his career.
It took a long time for Chavarria to ever visit his doctor, but when he did, it was confirmed that he was suffering from stage 4 colon cancer. He began consulting with several doctors, all of whom offered a number of different opinions on his best chances for beating the beast known as cancer. The next doctor suggested that while it may be possible for him to skip the colon-clipping surgery – at least for the time being –  it was necessary for him to begin radiation and chemotherapy. It was when an old friend from high school suggested to Alyssa that Mark try medical marijuana that his situation changed.
After he learned that it is possible to supplement with cannabis oil and not get high (if it doesn’t contain THC), he decided to give it a try. When Mark informed his doctors of his experiment, they said they weren’t for it but weren’t against it either.
Because cannabis oil was working, he continued with the treatment of oil and an occasional toke. When Mark began on chemo, he lost a staggering amount of weight – around 40 pounds in less than a year. He shares that while using cannabis oil, he intuitively felt that the herb was killing the cancer. While physicians chalked his recovery up to chemo and radiation, Mark is calling ‘bullshit’. Because the ordeal with cancer changed his perception about the herb substantially, he is raising money to produce a documentary about the healing powers of cannabis oil. Last week the news spread like a wildfire in a dry forest: eating processed meat is directly correlated with an increased risk for colon cancer.
But this time the news took a more somber health warning as the IARC, International Agency for Research on Cancer, coordinated by the WHO, The World Health Organization published a statement that categorized processed meats in Group 1, along with other Group 1 carcinogenic dangers asbestos, tobacco and alcohol, as having a defined link between processed meats and colon cancer.
This is a strong health warning, making some consumers scared to open their mouths and enjoy a hot dog or a few slices of bacon. Ideally a diet with very little or no processed meats keeps our risk lower for colon cancer, excluding other environmental and genetic factors. Le French culture: buys charcuterie (processed meats) from a specialty store or the local farmer who makes the products by hand (artisanal) or on a small scale production. Cooking with small portions of processed meats such as prosciutto (I am thinking Italian!), pancetta or coppa as a flavor enhancer in recipes such as soups and pasta dishes, keeps the taste of the meats in the dish while avoiding processed meats as a highlight of the meal.

Le French culture: loves processed meats, such as pepperoni and mini hot dogs for aperitif. Here is a list of ingredients you should avoid: Nitrates, BHA, BHT, Corn Syrup, Smoked, Naturally smoked, Smoke flavor, Cured. Now, a story has surfaced of a Hollywood stuntman curing his stage 4 cancer with the aid of the plant.
He started feeling overly tired in the evenings and even began noticing some blood in his stool. At this point, he had already given up coffee and red meat, but knew more serious changes were required.
One doctor told him the only solution was to surgically reroute his plumbing, which involved removing a portion of his colon and then fitting him for a colostomy bag that he would have to wear for the rest of his life. I’ve been lit on fire, I’ve flipped cars, I’ve gone out windows, I’ve fought a lot of people, but this was the extreme of extreme pain,” he said.
His wife was eager for Mark to try it, but he was apprehensive because of the stigma associated with cannabis. When he was on the pharmaceutical drugs, he was an “angry, mean person” and his wife didn’t like it. They still pushed the prescriptions for both Oxycontin and Hydrocodone, but Mark later learned that it is because his primary oncologist owned the pharmacy.
When he started the natural treatment, a renewed appetite helped him regain some pounds and keep a decent weight. Three of his friends, all roughly around the same age, were also diagnosed with stage four colorectal cancer around the same time. His ultimate goal is to break the stigma associated with medical marijuana so that all individuals have easy, affordable access to the medicine. Frankly I was surprised on the substantial amount of media coverage; the connection between eating processed meats (any meat that has been preserved by smoking, curing, salting or adding chemical preservatives) and cancer has been speculated on for at least a decade or more. Their statement, written by some of the leading cancer researchers was based on a thorough review of scientific evidence.
How can that bologna sandwich taste the same when you feel guilty or worried about eating it? However, it is not easy to convince people they need to eliminate or decrease eating a food that tastes so good.
If you invest more of your food budget for higher quality bacon, sausages, hot dogs, you will have less of the potential cancer causing compounds in the meats.
Eaten in small quantities, good quality more expensive processed meats are better food choices.

For example, five minutes after smoking cannabis, he would feel good enough to go out to dinner with his wife. Despite pleading from Mark and Alyssa for them to try cannabis oil, they chose chemotherapy and radiation and all eventually perished. In the IARC report, although the authors did not give dietary advice, they concluded that epidemiological evidence strongly suggested that each 50 grams or 1.8 ounces of processed meats consumed daily increased colon cancer risk by 18 percent. The backlash of this news, labeled in social media as #bacongate, prompted the WHO to issue a restatement to ease concerns among bacon, sausage and other processed meat addicts.
It is unrealistic to assume that a large majority of the population who now eat processed meats will abstain from eating it, at least in the long-term. For purposes of this article I recommend a lower dietary intake of processed meats such as hot dogs, bacon, sausages and transformed industrialized processed meats as eating these foods have more negative risk for our health. Avoid buying and eating cheap costing processed meats, these contain fillers, preservatives, artificial colors and flavors.

Amazingly, a colonoscopy and a CAT scan revealed that only scar tissue from the radiation remained. In particular here in France, the French simply adore their charcuterie and polls last week suggested that 53% of French will make no dietary changes from this health warning on processed meats and cancer. In general, eating a balanced and varied diet, based on fresh unprocessed foods is a healthy diet.
Look for organic meats that are free range or grass fed and that state 100% beef, 100% chicken. If it isn’t in the refrigerator, he makes something else besides BLT or bacon topped pizza! Avoid overcooking processed and all meats because of the chemicals that are released from burnt meats. There are processed meats on school lunch menus, and sliced processed meats are a popular item in school lunch boxes. I wanted to keep this part short and sweet, sharing a few lines from my soap box, but because the subject is close to my heart I will write a follow up article on kids and processed meats. Based on human nature to want to eat for taste and pleasure, I offer below tips on how to keep with the recommendation to lower or eliminate the dietary intake of processed meats. Since that fateful refrigerator post I have rarely eaten a hot dog, more than twenty years ago and running.
