Washington, Jan 10 : The channel protein Pannexin1 keeps nerve cells flexible and thus the brain receptive for new knowledge, a study has found. The best known representative is Pannexin1, which occurs in abundance in the brain and spinal cord and among others in the hippocampus - a brain structure that is critical for long-term memory. Using cell recordings carried out on isolated brain sections, they analysed the long-term potentiation in the hippocampus. Long-term potentiation usually occurs when new memory content is built - the contacts between nerve cells are strengthened; they communicate more effectively with each other. In mice without Pannexin1, the long-term potentiation occurred earlier and was more prolonged than in mice with Pannexin1. Due to the lack of Pannexin1, the cell communication in general was increased to such an extent that a further increase through the learning of new knowledge was no longer possible. Cinnamon may improve blood sugar levels for people with type 2 diabetes, research suggests. Cinnamon might improve not only the taste of apple pie and oatmeal but also the health of people with diabetes, a new review study suggests. Researchers found that people with type 2 diabetes who took cinnamon supplements had lower fasting plasma glucose levels compared with people who didn't take cinnamon. The most popular form of the supplement, which was used in six out of 10 trials, was Cinnamomum cassia, which participants were advised to take before, during or after their meals.

Phung said more research is needed to determine whether there is a true cause-and-effect relationship between cinnamon intake and improved diabetes control, or if the results found in this review study were just an association seen when the findings from a bunch of smaller studies were combined. However, she said that based on this current analysis, it looks like cinnamon may be useful for diabetes. NASA has equipped its Mars rover Curiosity with new Artificial Intelligence software that allows the robotic vehicle to make some of its own decisions on what to study on the red planet.


The space agency revealed this week that using the AI software developed by its Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) in Pasadena, California, Curiosity is frequently selecting multiple targets per week on its own. According to New Scientist, the new software from the space agency’s JPL analyzes images from the rovers’ camera to identify potential targets. ChemCam detects the color of the spectrum of plasmas generated when it shoots laser at rocks.

According to Mashable, in total, the rover that is exploring the gale crater on Mars has fired its laser over 350,000 times at about 10,000 targets. NASA’s robotics engineer Tara Estlin explained that the autonomy is particularly helpful at times when getting the team in the loop is difficult.

These studies compared people who took cinnamon in a pill form, in doses ranging from 120 milligrams to 6 grams a day, for a period of four to 18 weeks, to people who did not take cinnamon.
But in their latest analysis, they included data from the most recent trials of cinnamon in diabetes patients. Although it's not clear how cinnamon may work to improve blood sugar, researchers suspect this substance may stimulate the release and effect of insulin. If the AI picks out an especially interesting rock, the robotic vehicle can drive over and target it with its Chemistry and Camera (ChemCam) instrument without having to wait for the data to be sent back to Earth. The aim is to study and identify the chemical composition of various rocks and soil on Mars by recording the wavelengths of the spectrum when the beam zaps the target. The software update developed by JPL allows the robotic spacecraft to work more independently of the scientists located 46 million miles away on Earth. Curiosity’s new autonomy will let the mission’s team study more rocks using the ChemCam instrument than before. Most targets are still selected by scientists curious about specific areas of soil or particular rocks they observed in images transmitted by the Mars lander, but the fact that the craft can make some of its decision autonomously adds an important capability to the mission.
