Aside from allergens from food, exposure to other substances or objects may also cause hives to some people. Mild forms of dark spots (hyperpigmentation) on the skin are not usually medically significant. It is wise to be mindful about the risks of skin cancer and watch suspicious moles or dark spots that change in color or character, especially if you have spent a lot of time in the sun.
One of the most common conditions causing hyperpigmentation is called acanthosis nigricans. If you notice that the skin on the back of your neck is darkening and changing, promptly see your primary care physician to have your blood sugar checked, especially if diabetes or obesity runs in the family. Minocycline, a medication commonly prescribed for adult acne, can cause a characteristic rash – a darkening with bluish undertones that usually appears on the front of the legs or in facial acne scars.
Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) is a common ingredient in blood pressure medications and diuretics, and it can cause an overall darkening of the face and increased sensitivity to the sun. There are many different symptoms of lupus – a chronic, sometimes systemic, autoimmune connective tissue disease that can affect any part of the body. If you observe such changes in your skin, it is imperative to consult with your physician to evaluate your health.
Forms of lupus that affect only the skin are not as severe as systemic forms of the disease, which can affect kidneys and other vital organs. Lichen planus is a common condition that first appears as small, brown patches with a purplish undertone that can appear anywhere on the body. In conclusion, while the vast majority of hyperpigmented and dark spots are completely benign, some may suggest underlying conditions and systemic diseases that should be addressed. This morning I was doing my usual search for stories when I came upon this story: Ashley Judd Plastic Surgery? 7.  Because of these side effects, physicians try to use as low a dose, for as short a period of time as possible. It seems like there is a lesson somewhere in this story: like not jumping to conclusions without having any facts! But Ashley Judd did something very classy when people responded to hearing the correct diagnosis. Join the Celebrity Diagnosis Community for FREE & receive the Top Celebrity Health Fads e-book free! As a diabetic, my greatest fear has been the potential of complications leading to limb amputation.
Careful selection of shoes that are not tight, or rub anywhere and I do not wear higher heels at all. By being so careful, I have had no problems with my feet up to now and have been very proud of myself and happy about it. However, about 2.5 months ago, out of the blue, I developed a rash on both lower legs and feet. I saw that doc twice and she seemed a little leery to take charge and deal with the ulcers beginning in my feet. He said I needed more powerful levels of prednisone and antibiotics and cortisone cream than I had been given. My second visit with the dermatologist showed sone healing and improvement and we were happy.
Hello Shirley, I have not much experience with diabetes, but I can understand more, after reading your story, a whole bit more. I’ve been watching for diabetes since I was in my 30s and gained a lot of weight after having my only child at almost 35.
Some people with hives also complain of a burning sensation on the areas with the red swollen lumps.

Some people are allergic to dust or pollen from various flowers and when they are exposed to these things, their skin may react by producing the red lumps in hives. Sunspots on the hands of a middle-aged, fair-skinned woman, for example, may be a cosmetic concern to her, but they are typically benign and in no way endanger her health.
It usually appears on the entire back of the neck (so it may be hard to observe unless you use a mirror) and involves a visible and distinctive color change. This is an important distinction because when the condition is observed in these specific areas, it is often associated with an undiagnosed, underlying malignancy or cancer. The reaction can even show up in the whites of the eyes (the sclera) and the inside of your lower eyelid (the conjunctiva).
The reaction appears within a few months and may be easy to mistake for a light suntan, especially in those who spend a lot of time outside.
Lupus is more common in women, and the disease affects both light-skinned and dark-skinned people. There are effective therapies available for lupus erythematosus, including topical and oral prescription medications.
The patches can be extremely itchy, so it is easy to confuse this condition with eczema, which it closely resembles, including the lacy white scale that can form on top. Treatments for lichen planus are extensive, long term, and may include topical steroids, oral medications, light therapy, and laser therapy.
Hopefully this helps you  feel a bit more comfortable in identifying which spots warrant a visit to your primary care doctor or dermatologist.
These steroids are similar to hormones that your adrenal glands produce to fight stress associated with illnesses and injuries. Oral prednisone is spread throughout the body and has the highest potential for side effects.
Side effects of inhaled steroids includes coughing, hoarseness, dry mouth, and sore throat.  This can be minimized by gargling with water (and spitting it out) after using an inhaled steroid. However long term use of inhaled steroids for children with asthma does not prevent them from reaching normal adult height. After your steroid dose has been decreased or stopped, your adrenal glands may not be functioning at full capacity. The rash was not itchy but painful, and developed over a weekend so it was three days before I saw my primary doc about it. Nothing I had ever experienced before – back pain from ruptured discs, fibromyalgia, broken bones, various surgeries, nothing had ever hurt like these feet and leg ulcers did. Very, very slowly the ulcers are healing and I’m still dealing with sometimes excruciating pain.
Meanwhile, the moral of this story is to take very good care of your feet and don’t delay seeing your doc as soon as you notice a rash or blister or cut. I am blessed at the moment with good health, but my grandmother is diabetic and now in her 80’s and the doctors have told me to keep watch on her feet. I was reading that ulcers cause a significant number of amputations in diabetics and once the first amputation happens then often within 5 years, they die. My Dad was getting desperate with his foot ulcers and your post has given us many great pointers toward a solution. I can understand being desperate because these ulcers are extremely painful and disrupting to ones life. The frequency of visits to your podiatrist for routine checkups can be as often as every few months or once a year based on your diabetic symptoms.
However, if these spots were to grow or get darker in a dramatic fashion, it would be best to consult a dermatologist to discern if they are in fact harmless or not. Studies show that acanthosis nigricans can be associated with increased insulin resistance, a precursor to adult onset diabetes. Once acanthosis nigricans has progressed to the point of severe skin darkening, I’ve never seen it reverse completely, even with the use of bleaching creams and laser therapies.
Many NSAIDs (eg, aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen), especially naproxen as well as laxatives containing phenolphthalein, may trigger the formation of these dark, purplish patches that resemble a bruise, or blisters, usually on the legs or in the groin. If you notice your facial skin darkening and you are taking blood pressure or diuretic medication, see your physician to discuss options for alternative medications. There are certain forms of lupus erythematosus that affect only the skin (ie, no organs are affected) and often start out looking like dark or red, dry, irregular patches on the face and ears. But unlike typical eczema, lichen planus can also cause changes in the nails, such as thickening, and present orally, on the inside of cheeks and gums.

There are no self-treatment options for lichen planus; you must be under the care of a physician for proper treatment.
Therefore, Ashley has been on a heavy dose of medication to overcome it so she could get on a plane and travel to Toronto and New York to fulfill her commitment of completing four consecutive days of press to promote her new show Missing.
If you have a serious illness, surgery or injury, your body may not be able to handle this additional stress, and you may require a short steroid burst.
By then, the rash was on my tummy and arms also and some major blisters were forming on my feet. I asked about pain meds but he didn’t want to prescribe any because of the potential for addiction. My next visit was to be after the new year and three weeks away, so I had additional prescriptions and instructions to follow. You need to begin meds as soon as possible and get things under control quickly or things can go downhill fast. My first sign was being hypoglycemic, then it turned to pre-diabetes and then full fledged type 2 diabetes. I’m also working on cleaning up my diet to eat more live foods and less processed ones. The discoloration will fade when the medication is discontinued, and laser treatments are often effective at erasing remaining discoloration in the skin.
Topical applications and lasers are often effective at reversing remaining discoloration once medication is discontinued. In these cases, there is an increased risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma within these affected areas. My family doc diagnosed cellulitis and started me on a z-pac of prednisone and some antibiotics and said I had one impressive case and to return on Friday if not better. Another week went by and I remembered that the med I was taking for a bone marrow disease-a chemo type drug had a side effect of causing leg ulcers. Nights were the worse and each night for hours I would endure these pains, finally posting requests for prayers for relief on my Facebook account. Acanthosis nigricans can be worsened (exacerbated) by sun exposure, weight gain, and certain medications, including steroids or growth hormones. Six or fewer lesions occur, frequently only one, and they usually present in one discrete area of the body. Also of concern is that there is an overall increased incidence of hepatitis C in people who have lichen planus. She was a medical internet pioneer having established one of the first medical practice websites in 1997.
I thought i was better on Friday morning but by Saturday the rash was spreading up the trunk area of my body. I saw him that Monday and he agreed it might be causing the problem and did reduce my dosage but did not stop it completely, sending me upstairs to a new dermatologist who he said was an old guy who had seen it all. Once the medication is stopped, the condition begins to resolve, but there is often prolonged presence of the hyperpigmentation.
Yes he was an old guy and he was very intent on getting the ulcers under control and not worrying about my blood sugar or my blood marrow until we fixed my ulcer issue which was a good thing for me to hear at that time. I spent hours each night on my iPad reading all I could about vasculitis, foot and leg ulcers and side affects of hydrea and how to heal ulcers.
Even sitting at my computer is too much for me right now because of the swelling in my legs and feet. So Tuesday I returned to my family doc who acknowledged it was worse and sent me to a local dermatologist to see if I had vasculitis. She performed a biopsy and indicated she thought it was vasculitis; the biopsy indicated it was vasculitis of the small capillaries. More prednisone and anti-biotics were prescribed and she took me off one of my NSAID meds which could cause skin related side effects.
