Diabetes is an incurable condition in which the body cannot control blood sugar levels, because of problems with the hormone insulin.
Under normal circumstances, the hormone insulin, which is made by your pancreas, carefully regulates how much glucose is in the blood. After a meal, the amount of glucose in your blood rises, which triggers the release of insulin. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition, and the immune system attacks the cells of the pancreas. The exact mechanisms that lead to Type 2 diabetes are not fully understood, but an underlying genetic susceptibility is usually present. Gestational Diabetes - During pregnancy, some women experience heightened blood sugar levels and can't produce enough insulin to absorb it all. Maturity onset diabetes of the young (MODY) - Caused by a mutation in a single gene and is also very rare.
If people living with Type 1 diabetes don't receive treatment they can develop very high blood sugar levels - hyperglycaemia - within days. At the same time, the body starts breaking down fat for fuel to counter the low levels of sugar available to the cells. Those with Type 1 can also suffer a dangerous complication of treatment known as hypoglycaemia, which can cause a coma. If treatment doesn't effectively control high blood sugar levels, it leaves a person with diabetes more vulnerable to infections. Type 2 diabetes tends to develop more gradually, which is one of the reasons why medical professionals think that so many cases go undiagnosed. In the long-term, diabetes raises the risk of many conditions, including peripheral vascular disease (when the arteries to the extremities are damaged by atherosclerosis) and peripheral nerve damage.
Digital retinography also known as fundus photography is the creation of a photograph of the interior surface of the eye, including the retina, optic disc, macula, and posterior pole.
Fundus photography has the advantage of allowing the image to be examined by a specialist at another location or at another time, as well as providing photo documentation for future reference. Modern fundus photographs generally recreate considerably larger areas of the fundus than what can be seen at any one time with handheld ophthalmoscopes. In patients with diabetes mellitus, regular fundus examinations (once every 6 months to 1 year) are important to screen for diabetic retinopathy as visual loss due to diabetes can be prevented by retinal laser treatment if retinopathy is spotted early. Please say howdy once again to Dana Howe, a recent graduate student in Health Communication from Tufts University who's had type 1 since age 8. He is the voice of Darth Vader, and the guy who delivered one of the best-known modern monologues in "If You Build It, They Will Come" from the movie Field of Dreams. If we had a dollar for every time "What the heck??" was uttered in managing diabetes, we'd probably have enough funds to find the cure ourselves!
Byetta, Victoza and the weekly candidate in the pipeline mainly restore the incretine effect.

I have just started using this and it is very odd.I am glad that I have the same issues as some of the cases. I started Victoza 13 april and had some green apple quick step the first few days taking .6 mg.
I have noticed not so much the result of my A1c based on BG reading at time of drawing but more so on the more recent readings beforehand (say 1-2 weeks). I may have misspoke a bit on this as I just got back my most recent lab work that had my A1c at 7.3.
Also, I've been on a Medtronic pump for almost 6 years and plan to try a CGM with the start of the new year. Welcome to Blogging Diabetes – A blog that helps people learn more about real-living with diabetes.
In this episode of the Blogging Diabetes Podcast I chat with Scott Benner about his experiences as a parent and having a child with diabetes.
Insulin stimulates cells all over your body to absorb enough glucose from the blood to provide the energy, or fuel, that they need.
It tends to affect people before the age of 40, and often follows a trigger such as a viral infection. In most cases it develops between the 14th and 26th week of pregnancy, known as the second trimester, and disappears after the baby is born. Because there is no insulin to drive the sugar from the blood into the cells, the kidneys try to remove the excess glucose. This leads to toxic levels of acids building up in the blood - a life-threatening condition known as ketoacidosis. This occurs when blood sugar levels fall dangerously low as a result of taking too much insulin, or sometimes by skipping a meal.
Over time it can also damage the small blood vessels and nerves throughout the body, including the smaller vessels at the back of the eye, which can result in blindness, and the kidneys, leading to kidney failure. Fundus photography is used by optometrists, ophthalmologists, and trained medical professionals for monitoring progression of a disease, diagnosis of a disease (combined with retinal angiography), or in screening programs and epidemiology.
Digital retinography is a valuable screening tool for assessing diabetic retinopathy or growth of new blood vessels due to poorly controlled blood glucose.
Digital retinography does not take the place of a comprehensive eye exam by a trained eye care provider. The scene was investigated, evidence was gathered, and findings were taken to the lab to be analyzed. But in the last year, Novo launched a new kind of injectable, a "first line of defense for people with type 2 diabetes" called Victoza (generic: liraglutide). That means that they restore the colone hormones' capability to order insulin just in time as new glucose is passed on into the portal vein.
I started on 0.6 for a few weeks, taking it at night to overcome the nausea my endo warned me about. It can also be produced by carbohydrates such as potatoes, pasta or bread when they are digested and broken down. In Type 2 diabetes, either the pancreas cells do not make enough insulin, or the body's cells do not react properly to it. The condition is then triggered by lifestyle factors - such as obesity - and it usually appears in people over the age of 40. The brain requires a constant supply of glucose from the blood otherwise it can't function properly. The structure of DNA was introduced and, in conjunction with basic molecular biology techniques, was used to connect possible suspects with the crime scene. It's a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) drug designed to stimulate insulin secretion when hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) is present.Victoza is still the new kid on the block here in the US, having just been approved by the FDA on January 25.

And depending on the amount of beta cells left to answer the call postprandial spikes may rise lower. I eat very well, work out with a trainer 3 times a week and cook most of my meals and so with my sugar pretty controlled I was put on this.
It was approved in Europe last July, and has already been used by a fair number of patients there. The big question on the market, and among doctors and patients now is, how will Victoza stack up against Byetta, the most well-known injectable drug for type 2 diabetes?
I will say though that despite the horrendous nausea and splitting headaches, my blood sugar is the best it's been in ten years.
I have just a slight nagging nausea that I think I will be able to tolerate even it it never goes away.
Byetta has been very successful as a weight-loss aid, but the nausea it causes makes it intolerable for some people. One big difference is that Victoza has a longer half-life, so it can be injected just once a day, at any time.
In the info sheet, it says that side effect occurred in less than .2% of trials, somehow I am always the exception. The main reason I'm Type II is because I am about 75lbs overweight, so whatever weight loss I experience will be a blessing. I personally like this career and I would probably consider pursuing it because I want to be a physician anyway, and I think there is a good possibility I will focus in this specialty. I have been able to reduce my insulin from 160 units per day to 100."The side effects, he says, were some nausea and stomach pains which lasted only about a week. Before, due to lack of energy, all I did was lie around and wait for something to drag me off the bed.

Most mornings I have to force myself to eat breakfast but I know I must keep a regular eating pattern.
Byetta worked for a while, but eventually I wasn't getting the results I started out getting and the injection sites turned into itchy welts that would last for days. The Victoza I believe has really helped me as I was fast becoming insulin-intolerant."So what happens when patients combine Victoza with their usual oral anti-diabetes drugs?A  Funny you should ask. It has been tricking timing that medication so it doesn't cause me severe nausea or vomiting with the Victoza. Still, the only way to find out is to continue ongoing cancer monitoring for the next 15 years (!)There have also been discussions that drugs like Byetta and Victoza can cause an increased risk of pancreatitis. In response, the drugmakers state: "There is no clear association between this class of drugs with pancreatitis.
Those issues are some of the reasons why Novo Nordisk decided to pursue this therapeutic area."So Novo believes that Victoza is a fix for all those problems?A  Mr.
Moses admits that the company also became interested in working on VictozaA  because their insulin products are predominately used by people with type 2 diabetes later in the course of the disease. Victoza gives Novo an opportunity to start at the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, hopefully to extend the ability of a person to use their own insulin.
How have you found it?A  Please take a moment to share your thoughts in the comments section here.
