The diabetes epidemic is accelerating along with the obesity epidemic, and what you are not hearing about is another way to treat it. Type 2 diabetes, or what was once called adult onset diabetes, is increasing worldwide and now affects nearly 100 million people — and over 20 million Americans. We are seeing increasing rates of Type 2 diabetes, especially in children, which has increased over 1,000 percent in the last decade and was unknown before this generation. In a report in The New England Journal of Medicine, Walter Willett, MD, PhD, and his colleagues from the Harvard School of Public Health demonstrated that 91 percent of all Type 2 diabetes cases could be prevented through improvements lifestyle and diet. Here, I want to review in detail this new way of thinking about diabetes and outline the tests I recommend to identify problems with blood sugar.
When your diet is full of empty calories, an abundance of quickly absorbed sugars and carbohydrates (bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, etc.), the body slowly becomes resistant to the effects of insulin and needs more to do the same job of keeping your blood sugar even.
Insulin resistance and the metabolic syndrome associated with it is often accompanied by increasing central obesity, fatigue after meals, sugar cravings, high triglycerides, low HDL, high blood pressure, problems with blood clotting, as well as increased inflammation.
These clues can often be picked up decades before anyone ever gets diabetes — and may help you prevent diabetes entirely.
If you have a family history of obesity (especially around the belly), diabetes, early heart disease, or even dementia you are even more prone to this problem. Most people know about the common complications of diabetes such as heart attacks, strokes, amputations, blindness, kidney failure, and nerve damage. Diabetes and pre-diabetes ARE reversible by aggressively changing lifestyle, nutritional support, and occasionally medications. In fact many people with pre-diabetes never get diabetes, but they are at severe risk just the same. We were highly adapted to a nutrient-dense, low-sugar, high-fiber diet rich in omega-3 fats.
Now, in just one generation, they are nearly all obese and 80 percent have diabetes by the time they are 30 years old! New science shows that it’s possible, through an aggressive approach of lifestyle, nutritional support, and occasionally medications.
It is important to diagnose Type 2 diabetes early, but it is often not diagnosed until very late. In fact, all doctors should aggressively diagnose pre-diabetes decades before diabetes occurs, and before any damage is done to your body. Unfortunately, there is a continuum of risk from slightly abnormal insulin and blood sugar to full blown diabetes. In a recent study, anyone with a fasting blood sugar of over 87 was at increased risk of diabetes.
Most doctors are not concerned until the blood sugar is over 110 — or worse, over 126, which is diabetes. Insulin Glucose Challenge Test – This should be done with a 2-hour glucose challenge, 75 grams measuring fasting, 1- and 2-hour blood sugar AND insulin. Hemoglobin A1C Test – This is an important measure of glycated hemoglobin, which can be an early indicator of sugar problems. NMR Lipid Profile – This test is slightly different from the one above as it identifies the size of your cholesterol particles. High Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein Test – This is a measure of inflammation, one of the classic conditions that is both the cause and result of insulin resistance and diabetes. Fibrinogen Test – This measures your risk of clotting, which can cause heart attacks and strokes.

I am no longer on diabetes medication and I’m taking less blood pressure medications. Most diabetic patients need to receive daily insulin injections to control their blood sugar levels. To check your blood sugar levels using a urine test, you will need some specialized urine test strips. Checking your blood sugar with a blood test tends to be a little more involved than using a urine test. Once you know your acceptable range, keep close track of your normal glucose sugar level by testing after meals two to four times a day.
A chart that just keeps track of your levels will go far in helping you monitor your control.
Whenever your blood sugar levels are outside their range or different from the usual, refer to your supplemental diary. An A1C (sometimes refered to as Hemoglobin A1c) test measures the amount of glucose that sticks to your red blood cells. Your blood sugar chart and your A1C test will give your doctor a complete picture of how your blood sugar management is going. Once repeated A1C tests show that your blood sugar levels are acceptable and stable, you won’t have to go for A1C tests as often. A chart can be your best and most useful tool in the fight against the ravages of diabetes. Protein gets all the “airtime” (because there’s more money in it!), and although it is important to an extent, sorting out your carbohydrate consumption will dramatic improve your performance and body composition.
Carbohydrate is the body’s primary energy source, but any surplus calories will be stored as fat. Also, when insulin is dumped into your bloodstream, it causes a rapid fall in blood-sugar, down past your resting level – this energy crash causes cravings for more high GI foods (to rapidly bring blood-sugar back up again). The timing of your meals will also drastically effect your blood-sugar and energy levels throughout the day. You should familiarise yourself with the GI values of different foods (subscribe to my free email list and download this article complete with GI value tables) and understand that consuming some protein with every meal or snack will help slow the absorption of even high GI foods.


It’s especially important to consider the carbs in pre-fight meals, to avoid an energy crash in the ring.

In order to have optimal health you will want to eat foods that maintain a stable blood sugar. When you reduce your carbohydrate intake enough you will inevitably have to increase your fat consumption.
Not only is Fat consumption and ketosis good for fat loss, it is also excellent for mental performance. For many athletes they have been told that carbohydrates are absolutely necessary for athletic performance. There is an emerging field of research that shows the potential for ketosis preventing and possibly curing cancer (1). There is no doubt that there are many benefits to living in a state of ketosis and I have personally enjoyed them with my own experience. The field of research on ketosis will continue to develop over the years and I think it has excellent health benefits and possibilities. But medication and insulin can actually increase your risk of getting a heart attack or dying. Insulin resistance, when the body becomes resistant to the effects of insulin, is primarily what causes diabetes. The high insulin leads to an appetite that is out of control, and increasing weight gain around the belly. Some may even know that it increases your risk of dementia and cancers and can cause impotence. Therefore, I recommend early testing with anyone who has a family history of Type 2 diabetes, central abdominal weight gain or abnormal cholesterol.
Your blood sugar should be less than 80 fasting and never rise above 110 or 120 after one to two hours. It measures sugars and proteins combining into glycated proteins called AGEs (advanced glycation end products), like the crust on bread, or the crispy top on creme brule. An HDL or good cholesterol level under 60 and triglycerides over 100 should make you suspicious of insulin resistance. With insulin resistance or Type 2 diabetes, you develop small LDL and HDL cholesterol particles. I have seen this hundreds of times in my patients and there is no reason you can’t achieve the same thing if you apply these principles. As the carbs break down, glucose (sugar) enters your blood stream, prompting your pancreas to release insulin.
Anyone can have the testing done quickly at a doctor's office, but people with diabetes or other illnesses that can affect blood sugar may need to know what it is on a daily basis. You can do this at home using a special device called a glucometer that will give a digital readout of your blood sugar levels. All carbohydrate foods have a glycemic index (or GI value) which indicates how fast the sugars enter your bloodstream.
If you give in to the high GI cravings, this blood-sugar “see-sawing” continues, not only topping up fat reserves but also peaking and crashing your energy levels. Eat every 3-4 hours to keep things stable — going too long between meals causes blood-sugar to drop, only to spike when you eventually eat. High GI foods do have a place in an athletes diet, but ideally only after a good training session, to re-stock your glycogen (muscle carbohydrate) stores. Despite what you may have heard, necking a RedBull before a fight really isn’t the best strategy.
Simple carbohydrates are the worst and generate massive spikes in blood sugar and subsequent insulin. When blood sugar is stable your body is getting all it needs for various functions and fueling the brain. Despite popular media and conventional wisdom, in almost every study low carbohydrate diets dominate. Your body will switch from using sugar as a primary fuel source to using fat as a primary fuel source. The theory is that cancer relies on glucose as its energy source; remove the energy source and the cancer dies. If you are considering trying a ketogenic diet you should figure out what your objectives are and what you want to achieve. Your insulin should be less than 5 fasting and should never rise above 30 after one to two hours. These create inflammation and oxidative stress throughout the body, and promote heart disease and dementia and accelerating aging. They are much more dangerous than larger particles and lead to increased risk of atherosclerosis or heart disease. In fact, anyone with a high C-reactive protein has a 1,700 percent increased risk of getting diabetes. This is entirely due to sugar and carbohydrates in our diet that cause fatty liver, liver damage, and even cirrhosis. It took me years and years of putting on weight, my doctor putting me on diet pills that didn’t work, checking my thyroid with normal results, and then sudden weight gain while breast feeding for my doctor to give in to my pleading and refer me to an endocrinologist. Checking your blood sugar levels at home can typically be done with either a urine test or a blood test.
The process of checking the blood sugar with a urine test involves urinating into a cup and dipping the urine test strip into the urine sample.


First, you'll have to prick the tip of your finger with a lancet, which normally comes with the glucometer. The levels will almost always be higher than normal just after you eat a meal, but they should fall back into the normal range after a few hours have passed. When I got my glucometer, I used both simultaneously to compare and I definitely prefer the glucometer.
Use these tips to make sure your making your blood sugar monitoring work optimally for you. After an examination and blood test, your doctor will give you a more narrow range that you can manage.
When used correctly, it will inform you about how your daily activities affect your blood sugar levels from hour to hour.
Since blood cells have a lifespan of roughly 3 to 4 months, newly diagnosed diabetics should have an A1C test once every three months.
These changes in conjunction with continued monitoring will help you better manage your blood sugar and prevent the diabetes related diseases that often result from unstable levels. This reduction in testing is one of the best signs that your chart is working optimally to prolong your life and increase its quality.
Commit to your blood sugar chart and your health and you’ll live a longer, healthier life. High GI foods cause you blood-sugar levels to sky-rocket, forcing the release of insulin to bring it back down again. Eating low and medium GI food stabilises your blood sugar and energy levels, and your body will freely burn body-fat in the absence of extreme insulin release. So eat three main meals – breakfast, lunch and tea – and have a small snack between them too. The majority of the time, carbohydrates should be low to medium GI and account for about 55% of you daily calories. A raised level of blood sugar is actually quite damaging and generates systemic inflammation. Ketosis is actually preferable for endurance athletes as it prolongs energy by utilizing both glycogen and body fat stores.
Many people will find it very easy to adhere to the ketogenic diet and achieve very good results. I recommend this test for everyone over 50, and for anyone with any risk of insulin resistance, even children. After you draw some blood, you'll need to press the meter strip of the glucometer onto the blood.
If you use a urine test kit, you may want to keep in mind that the results shown do not reflect your current blood glucose levels, but instead reflect the levels as they were a few hours before you tested. The urine test gives a more broad reading, a range, so you don't know exactly how much glucose is in the blood.
Write this range in your log so you’ll always know where your blood sugar should lie. Test at the same time each day whenever possible and record the results in your blood sugar chart immediately so you don’t forget. Insulin also causes surplus calories you’ve eaten to be stored as fat, or at least hold onto your stored body fat reserves rather than burning them for fuel. Just distribute your daily calories evenly though out the day rather than starving all day and then pigging out in the evening. The meal should also be a tried and tested one that doesn’t upset your stomach – fight day is no time to experiment (try meals out before training and monitor how you feel). Your body converts dietary and body fat into ketone bodies, which are actually the preferred fuel source for many organs and muscles in your body (1) including the brain. A wide variety of evidence suggests that the ketogenic diet could have beneficial disease-modifying effects in epilepsy and also in a broad range of neurological disorders characterized by death of neurons. Cancer is now being considered to be a disease of metabolic dysfunction rather than previously viewed as a genetic abnormality. I have heard that for a couple of months she should have 3 protein shakes a day and unlimited fruits and vegetables. The instructions for both urine and blood tests may vary depending on the manufacturer of the test, but most work in a similar manner. These tests normally come with a color-coded reference chart so that you can compare your test results to the chart to find out what your levels are. When it has an accurate reading of your blood glucose levels, it will be displayed onscreen.
So if there is an inaccuracy in the glucometer, you will probably find out when the results come back too high or low.
Fat theoretically has a glycemic index of zero and will have almost no effect on blood sugar. If you have restricted your carbohydrate intake or have exercised rigorously these storages sites will have capacity. In the state of ketosis many people find their energy levels will remain stable and that fat very easily melts off your body.
Blood flow to the brain also increases during ketosis and has been shown to increase by 39%.
Weight lifters and sprinters will still require carbohydrates to replace glycogen stores after intense workouts. I also make sure that my test strips are not expired because that can give inaccurate results too. Eating a diet of predominantly protein and fat, with some complex carbohydrates (like vegetables) will help maintain a stable blood sugar. However, if they are full your body has no choice but to convert the excess blood sugar into body fat.
But will still have comparable performance simply using the glycogen stores within the body. You may do just as well by having a low-moderate carbohydrate intake in the form of complex carbohydrates which have a low glycemic index. Who knows, maybe scientists will come up with a new device in the future that gives even more accurate readings. My personal favourite pre-fight meal is whole-wheat pasta with tuna, sweetcorn an a little salad cream. Sugar can be viewed as rocket fuel for quick spontaneous power and fat as a wood burning stove for long consistent energy.
It is something you can experiment with to see how you feel and perform and get a better sense of what it is like.
Then I hold the blood to the test strip which takes it to the meter and gives me a reading. I don't test my blood sugar constantly, just when I feel that it might be high like when I'm excessively thirsty. It fuels you up nicely, is easily stored in a plastic container, and above all is within my limited cooking capability. Imagine the storage sites are your gas tank in your car, you can only fill it up so much and if you keep pumping when the tank’s full, gasoline will overflow and spill everywhere.
