Aquionics and Dot Metrics Technologies anticipate the first in a series of products built around this new technology to be available in early 2012. The Jaz spectrometer’s special adapter clamps onto a UV disinfection system quartz sleeve, utilizing fiber optics to transmit UV light between 200-400 nm. Aquionics systems utilize UV light to destroy microorganisms’ reproductive abilities on a cellular level. Aquionics President, Oliver Lawal, will take part in a panel discussion at the EPA WTIC event.
During the panel session, Lawal will announce Aquionics’ joint collaborations with the EPA. Xylem focuses on large-scale systems, while PURION is specialized in the construction of small plants for decentralized use directly at the consumer. The first UV-Pearl model will destroy bacteria and viruses in water flows of about 10 litres per minute. This allows specific disease organisms to be targeted more efficiently than with mercury lamp systems. These results were repeated at two independent laboratories using the Bacteriophage MS2 virus as a subject, and represent a significant improvement from UV-C LED research presented over the last decade.
All systems have been third-party validated and treat a wide range of flows and water quality. In 2006, it was mandated by the state of North Carolina to provide some type of barrier against pathogens in the water that might come into contact with team members.
