A study by the State University of New York at Stony Brook revealed that manufacturing flaws in some compact fluorescent bulbs can lead to potential UV exposure. The study, published in the scientific journal Photochemistry and Photobiology, reveals that tiny bald spots in the phosphor coating in compact fluorescent bulbs allow UV light to escape.
Researches say that compact fluorescent bulbs are prone to cracking due to the manufacturing process, which causes cracking in the phosphor coating while the bulbs are twisted into the familiar curlicue shape. The research is still in the preliminary phase and hasn’t been tested outside of the lab, which means that there haven’t been any known cases of sunburn caused by compact fluorescent bulbs, and researchers say that avoiding the UV exposure isn’t difficult. You might be getting some UV exposure long after the sun goes down — some new fluorescent light bulbs give off UV light. If you are particularly sensitive to UV, then select CFBs that have a double envelope instead of single, as it will block most of the UV light.

Actually you SHOULD switch back to the energy wasters because in the long term those ones are BETTER for the environment! How about led bulbs and tubes?Although expensive LED bulbs can produce light that is comparable to incandescent. LED (Light Emitting Diode) last longer that compact fluorescents, they use less energy than traditional bulbs and potentially, compact fluorescents.

You need to shop around for decent brands and pick the right temperature (colour) CFL for the location eg. Also you should select a CFL with a higher wattage than what the packaging states is the equivalent incandescent as they overstate the CFL’s equivalency, plus CFLs lose brightness over the years.
