Mike Boivin To get a better idea of the importance of New England Catheter's capabilities for medical device customers, Medical Design Briefs spoke with Mike Boivin, manufacturing manager at New England Catheter. The test results show that these acrylate-silicone blends are highly release-stable against this very aggressive acrylic PSA tape, even at such high aging temperatures and for such long periods of time.
Early research of the effects of EB irradiation on different families of polymers has indicated that most methyl silicone polymers undergo a degree of chain scission ("tearing apart") when exposed to EB bombardment. We proceeded to investigate just how far we could extend our acrylate-silicone release coatings. We have seen how the architectural design of an acrylate-silicone polymer can affect release performance. The Handbook of Sealant Technology provides an in-depth examination of sealants, reviewing their historical developments and fundamentals, adhesion theories and properties, and today’s wide range of applications. They are recognized for their unique combination of properties, including high heat resistance, physiological inertness, and excellent electrical properties. Instant and complete cure is achieved by simply passing the coating under UV or EB irradiation. Although there are many potential photoinitiators for these silicones, we prefer those that are oligomeric in nature (oligo = "a few," mers = "units") because "highly flexible" silicones fail to retain many of the "out-gassing," post-UV monomeric photoinitiator by-products. This chain scission predominates over the "reinforcing" EB-initiated, free-radical crosslinking of these methyl silicones (through the bridging of methyl groups via EB-generated methylene free radicals), so that the overall effect is degradation of the physical properties of the polymer. Epoxies, Etc's UV curable epoxy systems do not require the addition of curing agents, cure within minutes or even seconds, and have unlimited working times.
EB Cure: Blends of PC 900 with PC 910, PC 970 Our next analysis formulates blends of PC 900 acrylate silicone with two CRA-minus release modifiers - PC 910 and PC 970 (at 5% to 10% addition). One plausible explanation for this unique attribute for PC 970 release-modified PC 900 for maintaining very low and easy releases under 2-Mrad EB irradiation results from the PC 970 "on chain" functionality.
Finally, we have seen how different acrylate-silicone polymers may be blended with one another to fine-tune desired release characteristics. If we do not have an existing product that meets your requirements, we will develop one!IMPORTANT:EPOXIES, ETC.
This "on chain" acrylate functionality along the PC 970 siloxane backbone tends to accentuate the crosslinking of the polymer and thus to predominate over the chain-scission events.

There was no sign of any separation of the silicone and both 20% and 30% extender, even after 48 hours.
The information in this brochure is based on data obtained by our own research and is considered reliable.
Key extruder components include a feedbox, barrel, screw, and tooling.Silicone elastomers are typically cured by peroxide initiated free radical polymerization of methylvinyl polysiloxanes, and alternatively, by hydrosilylation using silicon hydride crosslinking agents.
At 40% extender, the formulated bath remained stable for 24 hours, but there was a separation of ~5% after 48 hours. Finally, I want to give special thanks to my onetime colleague Olivier Pinto who provided much of the groundwork on which this report is based. However, no warranty is expressed or implied regarding the accuracy of these data, the results to be obtained from the use thereof, or that any such use will not infringe any patent. Both of these curing mechanisms require elevated temperatures to obtain an effective degree of cure of the silicone elastomer. But only PC 970, with its "on chain" acrylate functionality, its even longer polymer chain and its high methyl-to-acrylate ratio gives the lowest, most stable release of these two CRA-minus release modifiers when subjected to EB irradiation.
Although low and easy "premium" release is the target for most silicone release liners, sometimes it is just as valuable to provide for a certain amount of a more secure and intimate adhesive contact with a silicone-coated surface.
The properties given are typical values and are not intended for use in preparing specifications. Initial and aged releases are very smooth and stable against a wide variety of adhesive materials.
In particular, extrusion is a process that provides continuous profile of a specific cross-section (such as tubing), which is then vulcanized by passing through a heated air tunnel typically at temperatures of 800 °F to 1200 °F.
UV-Cured PC 980 CRA-Plus (Modified for "Smooth Release")Our initial work with the two silicones told us that we could attain very high release levels at relatively low levels of CRA-plus addition (up to only 20% addition) of PC 980 into PC 900, but these releases were "zippy" (choppy) in profile.

All three CRA-minus release modifiers can be used in UV-cured "premium release" silicone release coatings, while coatings modified with PC 970 exhibit optimized "premium release" properties under EB processing. We found that we could additionally modify these coatings with up to 10% of either PC 911 or PC 970 CRA-minus release modifiers to achieve release that was both "tight" and "smooth." Figure 5. This leads to high energy usage during vulcanization and generation of substantial waste heat. In comparison, ultraviolet (UV) curing is a photochemical process where UV radiation is used only to initiate the catalytic curing reaction, thereby reducing energy consumption. Finally, we have developed a very compatible non-silicone MFA extender technology that has been added to acrylate-silicone release coatings at as much as 40% without any apparent sacrifice of UV-cure response or release stability. Since silicone is a UV transparent material, only the photosensitive catalysts absorb the UV radiation, so there is little production of waste heat.Momentive Performance Materials Inc. These coatings are coater-friendly for providing ease of application and consistent coverage onto a targeted paper or film liner.
This approach employs a photosensitive platinum catalyst, which, upon exposure to UV light, initiates the hydrosilylation reaction needed to cure the silicone rubber. The reaction proceeds vigorously at temperatures below 140 °F without substantial heat input. Traditional silicone elastomers can be readily modified to be compatible with this UV curing system, but Momentive also introduced the Addisil* UV 60 EX elastomer to specifically utilize the UV curing process.
The process was demonstrated in a pilot scale extrusion trial at a Momentive Performance Materials laboratory in Waterford, NY. As displayed above in Table 1, the UV cured silicone elastomer offered properties comparable to those of a similarly prepared thermally cured elastomer. The UV cure technology may allow energy savings and increased extrusion speed while maintaining the classic properties of silicone elastomers. As the cure is initiated through UV radiation, the degree of cure from skin to the core of the three-dimensional product is uniform, which allows high-speed extrusion of thick wall tubing and profile free from common defects such as internal porosity. The UV exposure time for the cure can be as short as 0.5 seconds, and a 10-inch length UV lamp will allow extrusion of silicone tubing at three to five times the rate of existing thermal curing systems. Since the cure occurs at relatively low temperature (under 140 °F), this new technology opens up the possibility of co-extrusion of silicones with other temperature-sensitive materials such as polyolefin and thermoplastic elastomers.
Such co-extrusion is not possible with traditional thermally cured silicone elastomers.Processing Advantages of UV CuringSpecialty Silicone Fabricators (SSF) (Paso Robles, CA) successfully trialed Momentive UV materials by extruding single and multi-lumen tubing with various wall thicknesses. SSF holds patents related to their Geo-Trans®* process technology, which employs computer aided sequencing that allows extrusion tooling, including the die and mandrel, to be manipulated such that cross-sectional geometries can be changed in fractions of a second within a short section of tubing. 2.This Geo-Trans tube provided an important opportunity to evaluate the Momentive material and the UV process.
SSF engineers were able to completely vulcanize the tube roughly 3? faster than with traditional thermal curing.
In another example, relatively simple single lumen tubing was vulcanized at 100 feet per minute. 2 – Specialty Silicone Fabricators' GeoTrans tube provided a test case for evaluating Momentive's material and UV extrusion process.Reduced footprint of production equipment. The silicone raw material is pumped via screw motion through the tooling producing the desired shape.
The tubing, still uncured at this stage, is then pulled through a heating tunnel, typically referred to as an HAV, or hot air vulcanizer, that can be up to 20 feet in length.
