July 30, 2013 By Poppy Dinsey 42 Comments Let me start by saying this post isn’t about slagging off Shellac. I know there’ll be people reading this who have had successful Shellac manis back to back since it first ‘hit the scene’ (oh hi, have I become my mum?) who will disagree that Shellac is bad for your nails, but you know what?
I always had it removed in salons, I used Solar Oil, I only went to salons who were using CND products…but somewhere along the way my nails became sad. But what I *did* know was that I needed major nail therapy to repair my nails back to their original strong healthy selves. Pre-Shellac I always used OPI’s Nail Envy Original as a base coat to my manis and I trust it as a true miracle product, so Nail Envy seemed the obvious place to turn to fix my nails. As well as doing the above I cut my nails back really short to stop them ripping and breaking as they were so weak and I also started looking after my cuticles with OPI’s Avoplex oil (which has literally the nicest smell in the entire world btw). AND I had a cheeky Jessica gel mani for holiday (I know that was bad of me but I only wore it for a week) and lived to tell the tale thanks to my Nail Envy obsession either side of the gels.
I’m always massively dubious about all the ‘miracle products’ in the beauty industry, but OPI’s Nail Envy really is one of them.
I had a lady yank falsies off before and what she couldn’t yank off, she chopped off with one of those massive false nail clipper things! You can also start taking biotin 5000mcg daily and within three months your nails will be strong and grow. Thank you for your article, I too have just recently used Bio Sculpture for the very first time and will never use any type of gel application ever again as these have completely ruined my perfectly healthy, strong nails!
Then I started using a new one, a lacquer, and I think it has ruined my nails, even using as a third coat it would migrate to my nail and was hard to take off.Thank you again so very much for sharing. I’ve been having biosculpture nails done for about 8 years now, and due to over-filing I decided to change to Shellac.
Same here – after 5 months of SolarOil and Nail Envy, my nails are better than they ever were before the Shellac disaster! I have had Gelish manicures for about a year and always had them removed correctly by the salon. I have been wearing either gelish or red carpet manicure with only gelish base coat and top coat for 3 years with no problems.
The lifting and flaking can be helped by using a quality glass nail file such as OPI or Leighton Denny. We've all been painting our nails since the grade school slumber party days, but a good French manicure is one nail trick that seems almost impossible to master at home. A pale pink base and bright white tips have come to characterize the ever-so-popular French manicure, which, believe it or not, is a common request at nail salons everywhere. Now (luckily) with all the new nail advances, it's easy to score a salon-worthy mani right in the comfort of your own home. If you really want to recreate the spa experience at home, dip your hands in a bowl of warm water and let them soak for a minute or two. Now, before you apply your first coat of polish, buff the top of your nails to prepare them for your nail polish. 3) When the polish is dry, apply the polishes on each finger with sponge to make watercolour effect. Choosing to paint your tips in black and white gives the manicure a bit of an edge, and the flowers are just lovely. A funky tips design coupled with some glitter will certainly catch the eye of people around. You can always keep things simple, especially if you have a job that requires you to sport a business look. Choosing to highlight a single nail can be a wise decision, since accent nails give the manicure a bit of an edge. Rhinestones may not be forever, but they can surely highlight an otherwise classic French tip manicure. We love how the owner of these gorgeous nails used rhinestones and a compelling shade to create a beautiful and eye-catching manicure.
Add some flair to your classic French manicure with a touch of color and a beautiful design. Soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur… If you’re a cat person, this is the perfect way to showcase your love for the furry creatures. If you’re not a fan of scotch tape, you can use a rubber band to create the perfect French tips.
If you’re going for a mani that might get messy, consider lining your nails with petroleum jelly like Vaseline before painting them, for an easy cleanup. Get your look polished to perfection by sporting the latest pedicure nail art designs that you can easily recreate using the simplest tools or bring them to your nail technician.
I few months ago I had the honour of getting a manicure done by celebrity nail artist, Gina Edwards. KISS Salon Secrets Nail Art Pro Tool Kit has all the essential tools to help you create endless amounts of salon quality nail looks from home. KISS Salon Gel French Nail Kit will help you achieve the most natural looking French manicure at home, with no wait time, and without the expensive salon prices. I painted over a pair of KISS Salon Gel French Nail Kit with Essie Mint Candy Apple and added some nail art to it. KISS Salon Secrets Rococo Veil Kit helps add a romantic and delicate Rococo design and nail veil look on any nails. KISS Salon Secrets Luxe Accents helps you achieve glamorous nails with 3D professional quality stones and charms in various sizes for a stunning manicure at home.
I LOVED the results and durability of Shellac, but having six back to back applications without a break completely ruined my nails. I used a number of salons so I can’t blame one particular one, but I did have a very dodgy removal from one girl who soaked my fingers in bowls of acetone than scraped the polish away with a metal scraper like her life depended on it.
Eczema destroyed my nails and cuticles ?? Been doing it a week and the Nail Envy looks hardly used.

I have been taking biotin for over six months and I am amazed by the change in my once weak, peeling nails. I have followed what you did and three weeks in I can already see results – thank you!!! I’ve always had healthy, strong, and nice looking nails and I do not ever go to the nail salon. Had not worn nail polish for years (my nails used to become brittle after using acetone-based polish remover) or had a manicure, but last summer, for my 50th birthday, I treated myself to a Shellac manicure on hands and feet on advice from friends. A graduate of New York University, she regularly contributes to The Fashion Spot, The Luxury Spot and authors the Star Style column for StyleBakery Teen. Even in France, where it's considered an American invention, this kind of mani is called "la French." Too funny, huh? Pick up a French manicure kit at your local beauty supply store (for longer lasting color, try a gel nail one), or invest in some sheer pink and white polish to easily do it yourself. My favourite is thumb and ring finger – but I did put too much blue polish on middle finger :( There always seem to be some room for improvements, both for my craft projects and nail art! And be light-handed when dabbing some polish on your nails with sponge (thin layers will work better), otherwise it’ll look like my middle finger :) Hope you enjoy some jelly love on your nails, and have a lovely weekend!
Please request permission if you are interested in using anything that I share in this site. I like to get gel mani's before I go away (they last two weeks!) and my color of choice is OPI's Bubble Bath.
You can give your hands a Parisian flair without spending a fortune at the salon, since French tips are fairly easy to paint. If you’re looking for a classy manicure but you don’t want to settle for plain French tips, this is the way to go. Combining different colors and designs can work, without making your manicure look too heavy. Here’s a manicure hack: use the tip of a pencil eyeliner or lip pencil to place the accessories on your nail.
Plus, writing a special date on the nail, one that has some deep meaning for you, seems like a fun idea. Painting a funky design is a bit trickier, but perfectly doable as long as you have a steady hand. This is a more sophisticated, but ultimately fun look – and the silver accents really make the manicure pop. The silver lines give the manicure a bit of sparkle, so it’s perfect for special occasions. This type of nails really offers a lot of possibilities, since you have more nail surface to work with. Here, we’re dealing with a more abstract design, which looks pretty glam in our humble opinion. If the designs above made you want to get a French manicure yourself, we’ve also put together a short tutorial that will help you get amazing results. Remove old nail polish, from all the corners and cracks, even if you were only wearing a top coat. Start by placing your hands in a warm bowl of water where you added olive oil for a few minutes, to soften the cuticles. Soak your nails in a bowl with ice and water after you paint them – the cold water will help the paint set faster. French manicures have always been fabulous, and we don’t see them falling out of style anytime soon. The transition to fall enables you to still sport boldly patterned toenail art designs, so choose autumnal tones to create beautifully detailed floral motifs on your digits.
She introduced me to a few new KISS and Broadway Nails innovations and product releases for 2015. The kit contains nail art glue to help you set charms and stones in place and keep them in place for days to come, a silicone stick for moving and positioning your charms and stones, a pointed pair of scissors for cutting nail strips and foil tape, a slanted pair of tweezers for picking up small charms and stones, a gradation sponge to help create an amber effect on the nails by mixing 2 or more colours together on sponge and dabbing on the nails, 2 mixing jars with charms and glitters and a nail wheel and station with 2 natural nail wheels (24 nails in total). Help create distinctive, 3D, intricate, rhinestone designs that your local nail artist achieves at fancy salons, but at home. You can apply these small stones in clusters, singly, on all nails, accent nails, the possibilities are endless. Unlike most glues that are watery and do not hold beads, charms, rhinestones in place, this jelly-like nail art glue was developed specifically for nail art perfection and actually holds each gem in place without sliding off the nail. Canadian Fashionista is a fashion, beauty and lifestyle blog that focus on personal style, beauty, home decor and so much more! And I spent a heap of time on forums reading about other girls who had their nails ruined too.
Have been recommended the Nail Envy and Dr Lewinns so will be trying to resuscitate the talons! The damage of my nails came from acrylics but I’m hoping the OPI will still strengthen my nails. During the holidays a friend convinced me to go with her and I got shellac on my real nails. After 1 month I had my feet redone but gave my hands a break, then I had 5-6 successive Shellac manicures on both hands and feet. Use the opposite end of the cuticle pusher to remove any dirt and grime from underneath your nails.
Moreover, it’s a manicure that works well for both short and long nails; but if you’re hoping for a more dramatic look, a French manicure on stiletto nails it’s your best bet.
The nail artist will be able to give you plenty of useful tips on how to care for your manicure. While going to a salon might be the easiest choice, with a bit of practice you can master the French manicure in the comfort of your own home.
If you go the traditional French manicure way, other colors will be easily visible through the pale French mani polish, so you want to make sure your remove all traces of old polish. For better results, do it like the pros: paint a stripe down the center of your nail, then to more stripes on the sides.

Whether you want to paint white crescents on your nail tips or come up with a more creative design, you can use scotch tape for better results (especially if you’re not a pro at painting a straight line).
Align the other end over the top of your nail to create the crescent-moon French tip shape. Now, going too floral is not a great idea, instead opt for an asymmetric pattern and style a cute floral print design on your big toenail or on every other toenail, depending on personal preference.
This interchangeable wheel station is perfect for designing nail art creations, simply place the nail wheel on top of the station and lock it into place. Each box contains 28 nails, a mini glue, wood stick and comes in a variety of different lengths and thicknesses. The Kit includes a 2 Rococo nail art sheets, 1 Rococo rhinestone accent sheet and a top coat and retails for $6.99. The kit includes marble stones, sugar stones, rainbow charms, mini white pearls, clear stones and a silicone stick for easy application and to avoid sticky glue from covering the entire nail. One mistake I used to make was to continue using it as normal nail polish, but I now switch to Nailtiques 1 to maintain my healthy nails.
I just started taking off the Shellac and now my real nails not only look AWFUL (just like your pics above) but they also feel odd too, like a layer of nail is not longer there! The Shellac was removed with acetone soaked pads wrapped in foil and the excess buffed off with an orange stick.
It works well with anything you have in your travel wardrobe!I am wearing OPI's Bubble Bath on my nails now and all set for a week spent on vacation in the Hamptons! As a side note, acetone nail polish remover isn’t your best choice, since it can dry your nails.
Once you’ve painted the tips, use a nail polish remover pen for final touch-ups, if needed, or dip a Q-tip in nail polish remover.
The new KISS Salon Secrets Collection features a Nail Art Pro Tool Kit, Salon Gel French Nail Kits, Salon Secrets Rococo Veil Kit, Salon Secrets Luxe Accents and Salon Secrets Nail Art Glue. Use the centre tray to keep your polish and glitters from spilling and, then simply polish and decorate your nails before applying them.
All these KISS Salon Secrets products are available February 2015 at your local Wal-Mart, Target, London Drug, Lawtons and Proxim. It comes in 4 new patterns and each box contains 30 nails (24 coloured nails and 6 accent nails) in 12 different sizes, along with a prep pad and a mini nail file.
That one removal was probably the culprit, but maybe just having so many gel manis back to back full stop was the problem. I noticed my hands starting to get a few white spots after the 3rd or 4th session (with 3-4 weeks in between – longer than recommended but the Shellac lasted and my nails seemed strong). You can paint the tips in another color or come up with a design to truly showcase your personality. If you want to keep them healthy, opt for a nail polish remover without this damaging ingredient.
You can buy a French manicure set that has everything you need to create the perfect mani, or you can use whatever nail polish you have handy. Broadway Nails is also releasing 4 new imPRESS Accent Press-On Manicures in fun new colours and patterns.
It retails for $16.99, but has a value at over $25, if you bought all these tools separately. It’s super flexible for ultra comfort and also prevents any air from getting underneath the nail, which eliminates nails popping off for longer wear time.
These will last up to 7 days, 2 times longer than other pre-glue nails, thanks to its advanced adhesive technology.
On the 5th manicure I had to have both hands and feet done in the same appointment – previously they were done separately.
The same goes for the colors – if you don’t want a traditional manicure, feel free to use whatever crazy shade you like.
It provides mega gel shine with a chip-free, extremely white tip and an acrylic infused technology that’s 2 times thicker and 10 times stronger than others. I used to have gorgeous, long nails and now they peel so bad I can’t even keep polish on because they just peek and break.
Even though a French manicure looks best on long nails, you can get great results with short nails as well, as you’ve seen above.
For more striking results though, make sure the base color is in contrast with the tip color.
It comes in Halo Effect (short and extra thick), Sugar Rush (medium and thick), Alter Ego (short and extra thick) and Dry Spell (short and thin) and retail for $13.97 each.
These are coming to your local Wal-Mart, Target, London Drug, Lawtons, etc next month and retail for $10.99 each. Next, it’s time to file your nails into your favorite shape – either give them a traditional crescent shape, or opt for a square or round shape. AFter a holiday, I then went back to the salon and had both hands and feet done againi in the same appointment again leaving acetone on my hands for 45 mins.
This time my hand manicure lasted only a few days after which the polish started lifting and within a week I had to carefully remove the polish at home. My nails then looked like your first photo and felt weak, brittle and I had to cut them all back.
They already look far better although my thumb nail has just split so they are still very very weak. My advice, NEVER allow your salon to wrap nails and leave the acetone on for more than 10 minutes!
I won’t go the Gel route as it has to hugely damaging top the nail bed to DRILL polish off your hands.
