Gel nails have a natural pink base (you can do color, but natural pink is the way to go if you want more wear between visits to the salon), and you can choose just about any color for the tip. Now, the only setback to gels is that you are usually getting a new full set every 4-6 weeks, depending on how much color tip you have put on to start. Another HUGE plus…since the tip color is the entire thickness of the overlay, your tip color never wears off. And, once your nails dry at the salon, you don’t have to worry about dings, dents and any other damage from reaching into your purse too soon after your nail visit. Last week, I found a display with the new Sally Hansen Insta-gel nail strips, which promise up to two weeks of wear. Each package of strips contains several items; a nail file, an orange strip, two packages of nail strips, a gel topcoat, and two alcohol pads, one to clean off your nails before application, and one to use afterwards (all gel polish leaves a sticky residue that needs to be cleaned off). Can you use the lights from other gel polishes (Gelish, SensasioNail, Red Carpet Manicure, etc) with these nail strips? You can, but you have to make sure that the regular nail polish is 100% dry first – wait several hours or overnight. You can try it – and since they have no dry time, you can use the gel topcoat right away. So to sum it up, you have to decide first whether you want to go for a natural french finish or a color. Then I applied the Essence Gel Nails At Home French Gel Top Coat to give my nails a pretty, natural finish. On this photo you can see very well that despite the fact that I applied too much product, it still crimped a lot.
I'm really excited for this blog post today because I've been thinking about it for a while. Upon hearing all of my old beauty school friends (who are now successful hairstylists) rave about their Shellac manicures, I decided to do my own research. Since I'm also a blogger and an avid DIYer myself, I went to the internet and blogs to try to find some good information on doing gels yourself at home. Before you decide to spend the money on a gel system, there are a few things you need to know about gel nails. This is an amazing deal on a complete starter kit, including the LED lamp that cures in 45 seconds. If you already have a lamp (or want to use a different brand) this is a great deal on the Basix Kit!
Read the entire tutorial thoroughly to make sure you understand each step clearly and have everything you need. If you've applied all of the product correctly, your nails should be finished and glossy looking.
If you follow all of these steps correctly and apply the product as directed, you will end up with a salon quality gel manicure at a fraction of the price by doing it at home by yourself. Now here's a look at the cost breakdown for doing them at home yourself: I spent about $125 for my set up.
Whether this sounds like a good deal or not is up to you because you also have to factor in the time you spend doing your own nails, as well as the quality of your finished manicure. Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with Sally Beauty Supply, Gelish, or any other brand mentioned in this blog post. I was recently given the opportunity to try out and review one of the latest trends in the nail and beauty world.
The starter kit contains everything you need for a beautiful salon-worthy manicure you can do at home. It was hard for me to keep this polish on for a "long" time only because it's hard for me to keep any polish on for more than two days. I loved this DIY kit and will definitely use it again, most likely for vacations and for my toes.
The Gelicious hybrid gel nails are nothing like the the gel nails that you can get at a salon.
However, my mum on the other hand is always complaining about her peeling and flaking nails. You can apply just a very thin layer of base and top coat and the final result doesn't end up looking thick and artificial. I also love Gold Digger as a neutral base, you can remove your polish with acetone free remover, but your not left naked.
I'm really happy with the product, and if you're an Aussie looking for an at home hybrid gel nail pack, then you should definitely check out gelicious! My natural nails can grow long, but I don’t like the shape of them that much, plus they just get too darn dry in the winter, no matter what I slather on them.
The pink base is layered onto the nail just like acrylic, but then the tip is scraped away while still wet using a shaped tool to give you that natural rounded shape.
Since the tip is solid gel, it grows out with your nail, and if you want to keep your nails a certain length, you will have to file off some of the color gel tip at each fill.
A UV light is used to cure the gel, so once you’re done curing, your nails are safe and strong. If you have short nails, you can cut strips in half and use one strip for two nails – I did this and was able to cover all my nails with one package, so I have the other one left for another time.

I applied way too much of the top coat and if you have to apply pretty a lot with standard gels, make sure you apply a really thin coat with Essence Gel Nails At Home.
I've been playing around with the idea of investing in a gel nail system for myself so that I can do my own gel manicure at home. I went to beauty school to become a nail tech and then ended up going back again to do hair.
I wanted to try Shellac, but I wasn't about to pay to have them done in a salon when I've been doing my own acrylics for years. I feel like with my professional knowledge and a little of my own trial and error, I've put together a pretty in-depth tutorial on doing your own gel nails at home. Remember, you're going to be spending at least an hour on them, so make sure you have plenty of room to stretch your arms and legs and still not knock over or spill any of your product.
Dirt and oils are everywhere, and those are the types of things that contaminate the nail during the application.
There are no substitutions for any of the steps involved, so if you skip a step or an item, you will most likely ruin your manicure. This almost always leads to accidentally touching the tacky gel nails on something while you switch hands, or a step is forgotten or skipped. The number 1 reason most artificial nails fail to stay on properly is due to the nail not being prepped correctly. You want to pay careful attention around the cuticles and try to get as close to them as possible. Use an alcohol soaked lint free wipe to thoroughly dehydrate the nail and remove surface oils.
Remember to seal the free edge first, then apply a thin layer to entire nail, and cure again.
Go back up to the gray and white header that says "seal, apply, cure" and do all of the steps to these other 4 fingers.
I've personally seen it as low as $22 and as high as $50 though, so $35 is pretty modest in my opinion.
For me, my manicure looks just as good as one I'd pay for in a salon, so it's totally worth it to do them myself.
First you prep your nails with the gel cleanser, then apply a quick coat of the gel primer. I was really impressed with the quality of the kit and can highly suggest it if you're looking try out at home gel nails. The first time I applied the gelicious, I did a rather thick coat, but I've since learned that I don't need to do that, they are just as strong with thin coats and the final look is much nicer. I usually get about two days out of normal polish, and three days out of Sally Hansen’s regular nail strips. If you reside in an EU member state besides UK, import VAT on this purchase is not recoverable.
The disadvantage is that it costs quite expensive in the beginning: you have to buy the whole set with primer, base and top coat and an UV lamp.
I can see it very clearly but in case you don’t, I marked the places where you have to pay attention at. However, I didn't have a ton of knowledge on gel nails until recently because we didn't cover them very much in beauty school. I was able to try out some of my friends' gel products and hear their personal experiences and testimonials. If you can't set aside an hour to an hour and a half for your first at home application then this is not for you. You'll need the Foundation Gel (base coat), the Gelish colored nail polish you want, and then Top It Off to seal your manicure.

This is not entirely necessary for doing your own nails at home, and you can substitute 99% Isopropyl alcohol instead- either is fine. Grab a desk lamp and make sure your hand is directly under the light while you're applying the product. Before you begin, pull your hair back, put on a headband, go to the bathroom, have a snack, grab a drink, gather everything you need, make sure you have no distractions, and put your phone away! I know we just did this step in the prep, but I like to do it twice to ensure every bit of oil is off the nail plate.
If you have sufficient coverage with only 2 coats then go ahead and skip ahead to Top It Off. Use Gelish Cleanser or an alcohol soaked lint free wipe to remove the tacky layer from the nails. Keep in mind that's also not including the gas it takes to drive to your appointment, the tip you might have to factor in, or the sales tax you might have to pay. So about halfway through the year you'd need to restock your Foundation and Top It Off, restock your colors, and update your color selection. I'm pretty convinced that with a little patience, practice, and if you study my method in this tutorial you can get great results with your gel nails too! The kit and other Sensationail products can be found at Walmart, Walgreens, CVS, and Target stores for around $60. A lot of the time i use them as a base as you can change your polish multiple times as long as you use non-actetone polish remover to take off the regular polish you always have a strong base to go again and again etc!! You can choose your preferred shipping method on the Order Information page during the checkout process. Sally Hansen is selling a starter kit for around $30, but any lamp meant to cure nail polish will work – more on that later! That’s why I was so excited when I found out that Essence has come out with its own Gel Nails At Home set. And I think this is a huge advantage for Essence: no need to soaken your nails to remove the gel, you can just peel it off.
Also, you have to apply a really thin coat: the base is very liquid and doesn’t stay in place at all! It cures with a UV or LED light and as soon as it's finished curing under the light the gel is completely dry and hardened. You will not be able to use your hands in any way, regardless of how "careful" you think you might be.
Your nails will be sticky and tacky and every little piece of dust or lint will stick to them, ruining your finished manicure. My nails lasted the full 2 weeks and were still shiny, with only a few very minor dings in the thumb and pointer finger of my dominant hand.
Say you spend another $125 and get another Foundation, another Top It Off, and 7 more colors for your Gelish collection. I've always had good luck with Nailene products so I was expecting to have a great experience with this. Then you apply a thin layer of gel polish and cure for 60 seconds, repeat for a second coat.
Within an hour of me trying them out, I handed it over to mum for her do a mani - she was very excited about it, and thrilled with the results after using them for  just over a week. No joke- I went from doing my nails to washing dishes by hand just a few minutes later without messing up my nails at all.
If anything touches them or contaminates the nail or gel before the last coat is applied, the nails will not turn out correctly. However, chances are if you're doing your nails at home, you are the only one using the products and this extra step for sanitation isn't necessary.
I was also intrigued by the LED lamp used with their polish, which cures in half the time with no heat, unlike UV lights. The gel polish truly is different than regular polish, the feel of it on my nails was seriously awesome. It was easy to soak off, I just used acetone, cotton and wrapped them in tinfoil for a few minutes like I do with regular glitter manicures.
Sure, I was able to follow the step by step instructions, but I don't need as much information as the average person because I have experience.
I've also heard a lot of good things about some of the newer store bought kits with LED lamps in them (Like Sally Hansen), though I haven't used them myself. After the entire nail is covered, wipe off your brush again and go over all 4 nails again to ensure that you have a very thin, even coat.
I did leave a bit more of a gap around my cuticles than with normal polish because you have to be careful not to get the gel on your skin, which could cause your polish to lift. So while I do have a better understanding of nails in general, I'm still very new myself to the whole gel thing. I realized that the average woman attempting gels for the first time was probably left feeling slightly confused by these tutorials. I have a lamp but I need to get a new one that is LED - I have the older UV and it takes longer plus I don't like the idea of UV on my nails and hands. I should have waited 2 more months before I bought a lamp and then the LEDs were being sold - darn it!
But what I have found is you don't need to only use the gel lamp cured polishes - you can use any shade you have long as you use an LED or UV lamp top coat.
