When food reaches the stomach, different hormones trigger the body to begin releasing enzymes that further digest the food. Chemical digestion is the process through which the body of a mammal reduces food to a size where the nutrients that it contains can be absorbed into the bloodstream. In the mouth, chemical digestion begins when the food enters and encounters saliva and the enzymes that it contains. When the food reaches the stomach, different hormones trigger the body to begin releasing enzymes that further digest the food. The very last stage of chemical digestion occurs in the final area of the small intestine, called the ileum. Although mostly mammals follow this exact process, certain other animals do employ chemical digestion to extract nutrients from their food.
The digestive system, as its name implies, controls the breakdown and absorption of nutrients in the body. An optimally functioning digestive system requires all of its parts to be healthy and working properly, and by doing everything possible to make this happen, you can assure you are getting the most from your food.

Potential Issues: Since saliva begins the digestive process, inadequate amounts can interfere with optimal digestion. Potential Issues: When the lower muscular ring is too relaxed, acid from the stomach can escape into the esophagus, a common condition known as acid reflux (or GERD- gastroesophageal reflux disease), which increases the risk of esophageal cancer.
Food combines with substances released from the walls of the stomach to form a thick mass called chyme. Food passes from the stomach to the duodenum, which is the first part of the small intestine. Some simple sugars are absorbed in the small intestine, while other pass undigested into the large intestine, where intestinal bacteria may break them down.
Potential Issues: In disorders like Celiac Disease, in which the body attacks the brush border, the surface area of and activity of enzymes in the cells are dramatically reduced which decreases absorption and can cause GI upset and other troublesome symptoms.
The large intestine, also known as the colon, is responsible for extracting water from undigested food matter and carrying waste out of the body. Potential Issues: Antibiotics can kill the beneficial bacteria in the colon, which can then lead to vitamin deficiencies and a host of other issues, the most serious of which is an overgrowth of a bacteria called Clostridium Difficile, which causes severe diarrhea and sometimes death.
Leaky gut syndrome is a controversial diagnosis, usually dismissed by mainstream physicians, in which the small intestine loses its ability to keep dangerous particles (toxins, bacteria, parasites) out of the body so that they are able to “leak in” to the bloodstream.

Describe the diet of each organism, explaining your reasoning in terms of teeth structure, size of stomach and length of intestines, any enlarged organs and corresponding diet. Amongst herbivores, for example, almost all have cellulose digesting bacteria within their gut that live symbiotically, assisting with the break down of vegetation.
These microbes consume glucose from cellulose but produce fatty acids that the animal can use for energy. These tiny, finger-like projections increase the surface area of the organ to allow greater absorption of nutrients. We discussed the comparison between carnivores and herbivores in terms  of their skeletal structure, teeth and alimentary canal. In this article, I will break down digestion from start to finish and look at the variables that impact this process. Proponents of this idea contend that leaky gut can cause a variety of ailments from migraines to fibromyalgia.
This theory states that yeast causes a variety of health ailments, such as chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia, by lowering the body’s immune system and wreaking havoc with a variety of systems.

Microbes can also be digested further along the digestive tract as they are also a source of protein. Each villus has capillaries into which the nutrients (glucose and amino acids) are absorbed and a lacteal, which absorbs lipids (fats and oils) and drains into the lymph ducts. In general, herbivores have much larger and more complex digestive systems, with fermentation chambers to allow the break down of tough cellulose and fibrous materials.
Bile is actually an emulsifier (like detergents) – it breaks the lipids down into smaller globules to allow the  lipases (enzymes that act on fats and oils) to work better. Saliva is a substance that, among other things such as killing bacteria and protecting tooth enamel, lubricates food, making it easier for it to pass through the GI tract. Smoking, dehydration, diabetes, anxiety medications, antihistamines such as Benadryl, antidepressants and appetite suppressants can all interfere with salivary production. This is called small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, and it can cause nausea, bloating, weight loss and vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Leaky gut syndrome is not a recognized medical diagnosis and many health experts believe was made up as a means to make money on herbal remedies that purport to treat it.
According to believers in this idea, diets high in sugar and processed food, as well as alcohol, worsen yeast overgrowth. These animals are less effecient at digesting their food and can sometimes be observed practising coprophagy (eating faeces). Forgut fermentation, or rumination, is a slower digestive process, but has the advantage of providing more nutrients and wasting less energy. However, a diet that consists of mostly liquids will often leave you feeling hungrier due to the decreased absorption time. Therefore, eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and avoiding foods to which you react poorly is one step. Whether or not yeast overgrowth as a cause of illness is valid, it is still a good idea to try to decrease your intake of processed foods and alcohol. The absorptive cell, or microvilli, are also in the epithelium and function to absorb nutrients. The exception may be honey-eaters, which do not require a complex system for digestion, as their food is already energy dense and in a form easily absorbed into the blood stream. The remainder is made up of proteins, electrolytes, mucous, and enzymes that help begin to break down foods. Intrinsic factor, released into the stomach, is responsible for binding to vitamin b12, which is absorbed into the bloodstream at the end of the small intestine. When gastric emptying is abnormally slowed, as can occur in diabetes and with the use of proton pump inhibitors1 like Nexium, food may sit in the stomach for long periods of time.
The major food-digesting enzymes are amylase, which breaks down long chains of carbohydrates into smaller, simpler sugars, which are then either absorbed or further broken down in the small intestine, and salivary lipase, which assists in breaking down fat.
The stomach also releases mucous, which protects the lining of the stomach from damage from the acid it releases.
In addition to allowing harmful bacteria to grow, food may harden into something called a bezoar, which can be life-threatening if it blocks food from passing through the GI tract.
And staying away from medications and antibiotics when there is no clear, beneficial reason to be on them will give you the best shot at optimal digestive health.
