Most patients with Hashimoto's and hypothyroidism will have acid reflux, nutrient deficiencies, anemia, leaky gut, food allergies and adrenal insufficiency.
You start with the simplest modifications, by removing triggers, followed by repairing the other broken systems to restore equilibrium, allowing the body to rebuild itself.
Knowing what you need to do is one important piece of the puzzle, implementing is yet another big piece.
Through much trial and error, I have found that this particular order works best for getting your ducks in a row. For example, some people have been drawn to detox as a first step since they have many symptoms of toxicity in the body, however, when their gut function is impaired their detox pathways won't work as well. Last month I had the pleasure of speaking with Liz Schau, who has been in medication-free remission from Hashimoto’s for four years (even though she was up to 175 mcg of Synthroid at one point). Karen, like many of us, thinks that she has had issues with her thyroid for many years before she was diagnosed. She remembers taking scolding hot baths in high school to warm herself up, and being more tired compared to her classmates. If you’ve been following my work for a while, you’ll likely know by now that gut health is at the root of autoimmune thyroid dysfunction. I first came across the gut-autoimmune thyroid connection when I was trying to figure out my underlying triggers.
When I first set out to figure out the root cause of my Hashimoto’s, I took an inventory of all of my symptoms, in an effort to find an underlying connection.
A few months ago, I asked my Facebook community of Root Cause Rebels the question you see above. I often receive messages from clients, readers and other health care professionals about people who are doing everything, but still struggling with their health. I had the privilege to chat with Karen, a woman who displays such courage and bravery in her everyday life. I am on a search for a new doctor that will listen to me and treat Hashimoto as the disease it is, instead of just treating the symptom of hypothyroid. Thank you Isabella for the wealth of information and work you have done with you book and presentation on the various summits.
I also had RAI done when I was going through the Hashitoxicois phase with an enlarge goiter and would like to see more information about this. I too, have a WONDERFUL Internest, I love her, but she also says my TSH #s are just where they need to be.
My general doctor, not sure he even knows what he is doing happened to throw in a Thyroglobulin Antibodies test that came back a little high at 44. My understanding is that if even one of the two antibodies is high then you have Hashimotos.
Hi Izabella - I seem to be one of those people who is falling through the cracks - as my lab work is good - except reverse T3 hasn't been measured - that's my next question to my Dr; but I do have an abnormal thyroid ultrasound showing multiple thyroid nodules on both lobes- so even though my lab work is normal, can the nodules cause hashimotos or hypothyroid symptoms? Debbie, are you feeling better since you had your thyroid taken out ?, did most all if your hashi symptoms go away ? When I was given the Hasgimotos diagnosis, I was told the "best" thing that could be dine was to get to and stay at u-thyroid. What happens when the tsh is lower than the range and other valued are normal within the range the t4 and t3.
To make the filling, place all of the filling ingredients into a blender or food processor and blend until it reaches a smooth, batter-like consistency. H Pylori has been recognized as a trigger for Hashimoto’s and eradicating it has helped some people go into remission. Most patients with Hashimoto's will present with acid reflux, nutrient deficiencies, anemia, intestinal permeability, food sensitivities, gum disorders and hypoglycemia in addition to the “typical” hypothyroid symptoms such as weight gain, cold intolerance, hair loss, fatigue and constipation. Most physicians and endocrinologists will say that in Hashimoto's, hypothyroidism is irreversible and ends with complete thyroid cell damage, leading to a lifelong requirement of thyroid hormone medications.
Chronic infections are the Hashimoto's triggers that get the least amount of attention, yet identifying and treating them can result in a complete remission. Molecular mimicry is the theory that bacterial cells or other microbial “triggers” have a similar appearance to the cells that make up parts of our physiology or “self” antigens. When an infection occurs, these infectious cells are recognized as foreign. Molecular mimicry is an autoimmune theory that suggest  bacterial cells or other microbial “triggers” have a similar appearance to the cells that make up parts of the human body, or “self antigens". When I was first searching for a healing plan for Hashimoto’s, I learned about the role of the gut in autoimmune disorders. The medical information on this website is provided as an educational resource only, and is not intended to be used or relied upon for any diagnostic or treatment purposes. Most physicians and endocrinologists will say that in Hashimoto's, hypothyroidism is irreversible and ends with complete thyroid cell damage, leading to a lifelong requirement of thyroid hormone medications. Studies show that once the autoimmune attack ceases, the damaged thyroid has the ability to regenerate.
In addition to the ultrasound and TPO antibodies, a test can be done by administering TRH (Thyroid Releasing Hormone), which will cause an increase in T3 and T4 if the thyroid has recovered. Conventional medicine has yet to recognize the impact of lifestyle modifications that can slow down, halt or reverse thyroid antibodies.
Additionally, skepticism often keeps patients from reaching out to alternative practitioners. This is why I, as an established clinical pharmacist, decided to take on lifestyle interventions as a personal mission. Obviously there is way too much information to cover in one blog post, so I will be trickling the information out over the next few months . Epstein-Barr is a virus that causes mononucleosis (also known as “Mono” or “glandular fever in the UK), a debilitating viral infection that is common among college students, and is also known as the “kissing disease”, because individuals are thought to be exposed to the virus through saliva of those who are infected. Most thyroid conditions (Hashimoto's, Graves', thyroid cancer) result from an immune system that is out of balance. Be careful with kelp and iodone it can increase and even trigger the auto-immune attack on the thyroid.
Hi Mark, that can happen, as the immune system is constantly launching an attack against the thyroid.

Tiffany, if you have done the RAI, the chances that your thyroid tissue will regenerate are slim. I have hashimoto's was taking NDT for 6 months and deicded i wanted to see if i could heal it as a friend of mine healed his with taking 12 tablets of Modifilan seaweed tablets for a few months along with selenium.. So in reading the study, I noticed that it said of the 92 patients with Hashimotos, 22 became became euthyroid, while 70% remained in a hyprothyroid state by three months. Appropriate thyroid medication management will allow you to recover from the effects of hypothyroidism, giving you the energy, vitality and support to continue working on optimizing your health. Figuring out which foods nourish you, and which ones cause you harm is the single most important thing you can learn in your health journey. As a result of her own journey, Liz now dedicates her time to helping others with autoimmune conditions! I was suffering with constant bloating, irritable bowel syndrome (alternating constipation and diarrhea), stomach aches and frequent acid reflux, when I came across the work of Dr. Here are some of the responses… Read more about What does it feel like to have thyroid disease? I don’t know if it’s the long days, the warm weather, or how the world seems to be at ease that makes me feel like I can do anything! Karen’s journey has been one of heartbreak and joy, and it was such an honor to speak with her. Isabella for all your excellent information both in this email and during your guest appearances on the Diabetes Summit and the Thyroid Summit. It was when I stopped eating anything with gluten in it that everything started to get better.
I am tired all the time, my hair is falling out, I am ALWAYS cold even with the house temp at 77* and my fingernails split break, bend, peel and tear back into the flesh part of my fingers.
I am sharing this to share my story and to say WE have a right to question what is happening to our bodies and request testing. Izabella Wentz, first I'd like to thank you for all the significant research you have done and putting a book together to the rest of us try to understand and seek help and help ourselves with Hashimoto's. Whisk together the coconut cream, ghee, palm sugar, honey, and salt in a heavy-bottomed saucepan. The body becomes stuck in a chronic state of immune system overload, adrenal insufficiency, gut dysbiosis, impaired digestion, inflammation, and thyroid hormone release abnormalities. I thought my fatigue would be solved by thyroid medications, but the medications only helped a little bit. Unfortunately, some of the infections can be progressive, leading to more and more symptoms, if not identified and treated accordingly, thus I want to make you all aware of them whenever I can. Lyme has been primarily thought to be a tick-borne infection, that was triggered by a tick-bite (tics carry the Borrelia bacteria), so I always ask my clients if they have spent time in the wilderness. This is really great for getting rid of the infections, but sometimes the immune system targets proteins in the infectious cells that resemble the proteins in our own cells.
When these bacteria are present, the immune system attacks not only them, but also parts of our body that may have similar appearing proteins. Unfortunately, despite my hours of research, I was stuck in a state of "paralysis by analysis", there was just so much information about Hashimoto's and autoimmune disease, I didn't know where to start, who to trust, or if anything would actually help. It actually started 8 years before I was finally diagnosed in 2009, after I got Mono (Epstein-Barr Virus) in college.
Often, people with Hashimoto's will become deficient in nutrients required for proper thyroid function. If you have tried all of the strategies mentioned above, talk to your doctor about hormonal imbalances or toxicities (like heavy metals) that could be contributing.
Fasano describes that developing autoimmunity is like a three-legged stool, all of these factors must be present for autoimmunity to occur! This information should not be used as a substitute for professional diagnosis and treatment.
Thyroid ultrasounds will show normal thyroid tissue that has regenerated, and the person will no longer test positive for TPO Antibodies.
I wanted to not only get better myself, but to also bring this information into the mainstream to help others with Hashimoto's. Some of them are recovering by accident, and some on purpose. I have been researching lifestyle interventions for Hashimoto's for the past three years and hope that this blog, my book, Hashimoto's The Root Cause and your own research will give you the tools to find and treat the root cause of Hashimoto’s so that you too can get better—on purpose! Remission of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis in a twelve-year-old girl with thyroid changes documented by ultrasonography. I have never been told that it is Hashimotos Thyroiditis but my dosage of Thyroxine has never been the same over the course of. I encourage you to learn as much as you can about your condition, so that you can be your own health advocate.
Many people do not absorb their medications correctly due to gut issues, sometimes it's a lactose issue (found in synthroid). My doc just told me the same thing regarding needing higher and higher doses throughout my life and my thyroid eventually dying. Hang in there, it can get better, but you will need to take her health into your own hands. Look for infections, periods of severe stress, the use of medications (especially antibiotics, antacids, and oral contraceptives), accidents, and exposure to toxins.
It likely took you many years to get to the current health you are in, and it will take you some time to straighten your body out.
You will also receive occasional updates about new research, resources, giveaways and helpful information.
I came across Liz's story a few years ago during my own search and was inspired to find my root cause as well. She remembers that her aunt, who was a nurse, commented that Karen appeared to have a goiter at age 17. Presently, I am trying to find a Functional Medicine Practitioner in the Clearwater, FL area. Bring to a soft boil, and then reduce the heat to simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens and is a rich golden brown. It has been reported that thyroid function spontaneously returned in 20% of patients with Hashimoto's.  Read more about Is It Possible To Recover Thyroid Function In Hashimoto's?

One of the most well-known examples of this theory in action is the common throat infection known as “strep throat”. I needed to sleep for 12 hours each night to be able to function, and by “function” I mean after hitting the snooze button on my alarm clock for two hours (ask my poor husband), I would drag myself out of bed and then had to drink 4-6 cups of caffeine everyday to keep myself awake. Fasano and colleagues, every person with an autoimmune disorder has something called intestinal permeability, also knows as a “leaky gut”. I am committed to spreading the word about lifestyle changes for Hashimoto’s and hypothyroidism. Please consult your health care provider before making any healthcare decisions or for guidance about a specific medical condition. Even when the thyroid is taken out surgically or treated with radioactive iodine the immune imbalance still persists in most cases.
Even yogurts that are marketed as "healthy" contain the equivalent of 16 teaspoons of sugar. However, please know that the push to get better has to come from you, so be sure to learn as much as you can and be your own health advocate. Im constantly up & down in my T3 & T4 levels, even when my dosage stays the same for months at a time, and I never have felt like it is working- for over 10 yrs now!
In reviewing this, while that is 22 people who had normal thyroid function for a while, the other 70 had no measurable change after three months.
It took me three years to figure this stuff out, but I now have my life back and am trying to create awareness as much as possible so others don't have to suffer as long as I did.
These are events that may have contributed to Hashimoto's. Once you do, you will know what types of changes you need to implement to make yourself feel better. I have been complianing of symptoms for twenty years that of grownn now to what apprears as food intolerances came seem as exstream as Celiac, but negative test.
I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's by Mayo Clinic but they said my #'s were normal at that time so there was nothing they could do for me until my thyroid went into a hypo state. I started to see gradual improvements with all of my interventions and finally felt like my old self again in February of 2012!
Here are the top 9 things that I would say to a friend that is newly diagnosed with Hashimoto's. So, My question is: If I've already done the radioactive iodine treatment, do I have any other options, other than to take meds such as synthroid, levothyroxine, armour etc? That is rather statistically significant. While that gives some glimmer of hope, it is just a glimmer and is not saying at all that these people will no longer have Hashimotos. My objective is to identify and outline the situations that will result in remission, such as 1. I asked my doctor about restoring the thyroid to its normal state and he proceeded to tell myself and my husband, "I am sorry, look at the screen", he showed us what a "normal" healthy thyroid is to look like and he showed us what mine looked like, and it was un recognizable. I share a ton of information about my story, what's going on in Hashimoto's, helpful strategies and ways to overcome the condition on my website and have a patient guide available that can help you help her.
The doctors have and still do tell me everything is fine excess ferritin of 4 for twenty years. He told me it was benign, no biopsy or any test, to have it checked yearly as long as it didn't get bigger they would do nothing.
Isn't one of the "gifts" Hashi's brings is that you can fluctuate between a hypo and hyper state?
It was so scared over from years of not knowing about my disease that it basically was non existent.
I hope that you are not eating gluten because eliminating gluten reduced my TPO antibodies to the upper level of the normal range and I'm hoping that it will reduce them more as time goes on and I address more issues. I had been finally diagnosed for Hashimoto's a year prior to this bit no treatment till nodule was discovered by ultrasound. I don't feel well on these meds (fatigued, hair loss, depression, etc) Are there any alternatives to these meds? Refuse to put Hashi's as a diagnosis even though the ultrasound and TPO blood work says so. I would like to know your opinion of the integrative doctor I have scheduled an appointment with for this upcoming April 2015.
I knew when I found him that he is what I've been praying for, but he isn't accepting patients with my insurance right now. So in turn, wouldn't this also mean that there is a chance, that even briefly, your thyroid might return to a normal functioning state, only to then have the pendulum swing in one direction or the other? I saw your list of Dr's throughout the country that your followers have used and they read your book.
Could this "growth" have anything to do with it and is there a competent endo near Jacksonville Florida?
In this instance, I ask you, would you have me try your remedies, as I have just become pregnant and was told that I will absolutely need Replacement Therapy for the baby to develop properly?
Any chance you could send me a private email so I could share this info with and what proper questions I should ask when I go to this Doc?
I was born with a bleeding disorder, and while I am experiencing a beautiful remission, I would be foolish to believe that I am cured and disregard the fact that in any moment, I could relapse and have a major bleeding episode.
I have read where infusions help relieve symptoms because white blood cells are replenished. This suggests to people that if people eat better and take certain supplements, then they can give up their medication and be "cured". While we all are desperate to feel better, that desperation can lead to doing desperate things and compromising their health.
